No mechanical hard drive is guaranteed silent: spinning platters and moving heads can produce sound, especially during seeks. If silence is the priority, use an SSD for the noise-sensitive storage tier. If you need HDD capacity, compare the exact model’s idle and seek ratings rather than choosing by brand or drive family alone.
Why “quietest” depends on how a drive is measured
Idle and seek noise are different conditions. A drive can be relatively unobtrusive while idle and more audible when its heads move to read or write data. Compare both figures when the manufacturer publishes them, and check that the figures apply to the precise capacity and model you are considering.
Manufacturer ratings are specifications, not a controlled listening test across brands. The available figures below do not establish a definitive cross-brand winner, and Toshiba’s stated “dB” idle figure should not be treated as directly equivalent to Seagate’s dBA ratings.
What the published HDD noise figures show
| Drive and scope | Published acoustic figure | Other relevant details |
|---|---|---|
| Toshiba N300 helium-filled models, 12–22 TB | 20 dB typical in idle mode, according to Toshiba | 7,200 rpm NAS line; supports 24/7 operation; up to 22 TB; three-year limited warranty. Toshiba does not state a seek-noise figure on the cited page. |
| Seagate IronWolf, 2 TB | 20 dBA typical idle; 21 dBA typical seek | CMR, 5,400 rpm; figures are from Seagate’s 2025 data sheet. |
| Seagate IronWolf, 4 TB | 23 dBA typical idle; 25 dBA typical seek | Figures are from Seagate’s 2025 data sheet. |
| Seagate IronWolf, 6 TB | 25 dBA typical idle; 26 dBA typical seek | Figures are from Seagate’s 2025 data sheet. |
| WD Red Plus | Not stated in the cited WD materials | 3.5-inch NAS HDD family; WD classifies Red Plus as CMR and recommends it for ZFS systems. |
For the N300, Toshiba says, “the helium-filled N300 models minimize acoustic output to just 20db (typical) in idle mode.” The stated scope is its helium-filled 12–22 TB models; it is an idle claim, not a seek rating. Toshiba N300 specifications.

Which HDD options make sense for different needs?
High-capacity NAS storage: Toshiba N300 helium models
The 12–22 TB helium-filled N300 models are a candidate when you need high-capacity NAS storage and idle acoustics matter. Toshiba positions the N300 as a 7,200 rpm drive for NAS use and 24/7 operation. Its published 20 dB typical figure applies only to idle mode, so it does not establish how loud the drive will be during active seeks or how it compares with another brand in a matched test. See Toshiba’s N300 range and specifications.

Lower-capacity NAS comparison: Seagate IronWolf
The 2 TB IronWolf has published typical idle and seek figures of 20 and 21 dBA, respectively. In the same 2025 data sheet, the 4 TB and 6 TB models have higher figures. Treat those as specific model ratings, not a universal rule that capacity always determines noise. Confirm the exact SKU and current specification before buying. Check Seagate’s IronWolf data sheet.

WD Red Plus is another NAS HDD family to evaluate when the workload calls for CMR. WD recommends Red Plus and Red Pro for ZFS systems, but the cited WD material does not provide a directly comparable noise figure. Check the current specification for the exact model rather than assuming the line is quieter or louder than a competitor. WD Red Plus product information and WD guidance on SMR, CMR, and NAS drives.

Video recording: Toshiba V300
Toshiba’s V300 is designed for DVR, TV, NVR, and surveillance workloads, and the company advertises Silent Seek Technology. It is available up to 3 TB, so its intended role and capacity make it a specialized video-recording option—not a general recommendation for a high-capacity NAS simply because “Silent Seek” appears in its name. Toshiba also states a workload rating of 72 TB per year and claims energy consumption up to 25% lower than its P300 7,200 rpm model; that comparison is about energy, not noise. Toshiba V300 specifications.
Absolute quiet: use SSD storage
An SSD has no spinning platters or mechanical read/write heads, so it removes drive-generated mechanical noise. It is the direct option when silence matters more than HDD capacity-per-dollar. Check that the SSD’s capacity, endurance, interface, and cost suit the storage role.

How to choose a quieter drive for a PC or NAS
- Identify the workload and required capacity. Decide whether the drive will store desktop files, serve a NAS, or record video. A drive intended for one workload is not automatically suitable for another.
- Check the exact model and capacity. Noise figures can differ among capacities within one product family. Use the datasheet for the precise SKU.
- Compare idle and seek ratings separately. Prefer figures published under clearly stated conditions. Do not treat an idle-only claim as a full picture of drive noise.
- Confirm recording technology and NAS compatibility. Check whether the workload requires CMR, whether the NAS supports the drive’s form factor and capacity, and whether the drive is appropriate for the intended NAS configuration. WD’s guidance distinguishes its CMR and SMR drive tiers and discusses ZFS recommendations.
- Inspect the enclosure and mounting. The cited manufacturer pages do not quantify vibration in a particular PC case, desk, or NAS enclosure. If a drive sounds louder once installed, investigate how it is mounted and whether the enclosure or nearby surface is resonating; no universal noise reduction can be inferred from the published drive ratings.
- Decide whether HDD capacity is worth the sound. If even seek activity is unacceptable, use SSD storage for that tier instead of trying to infer silence from an HDD’s idle figure.
