The Antarctic ozone hole is a seasonal region where stratospheric ozone becomes exceptionally depleted. It is not an empty opening in the atmosphere: NASA defines the mapped hole as the area with total-column ozone at or below 220 Dobson Units (DU). Long-lived, human-made chemicals release chlorine and bromine high in the atmosphere; Antarctic winter cold prepares those halogens, and returning spring sunlight triggers catalytic reactions that destroy ozone. The hole usually expands from August, reaches its greatest extent between mid-September and early October, and then shrinks as the polar stratosphere warms and its circulation breaks down.

What the “ozone hole” actually is

Ozone is a three-oxygen molecule concentrated mainly in the stratosphere, roughly 15 to 35 kilometres above Earth. That layer absorbs much of the Sun’s biologically damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The Antarctic ozone hole is the seasonal Antarctic area in which the total amount of ozone in the entire vertical column falls to unusually low values.

NASA’s operational boundary is 220 DU or less. A Dobson Unit measures the amount of ozone in a vertical column: it represents the thickness that all of that ozone would occupy if compressed to standard temperature and pressure. The 220-DU cutoff was chosen because satellite records did not show values that low over Antarctica before 1979, and aircraft observations connected the low columns with chlorine- and bromine-catalysed chemical loss.

“Hole” therefore describes severe depletion, not zero ozone. Even at the centre of the seasonal minimum, some ozone remains, and the depleted region changes shape and area from day to day.

“The ozone hole is not technically a ‘hole’ where no ozone is present, but is actually a region of exceptionally depleted ozone in the stratosphere over the Antarctic that happens at the beginning of Southern Hemisphere spring (August–October).”

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Ozone Watch

How the ozone hole forms, step by step

  1. Ozone-depleting substances enter the atmosphere. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and related compounds were used in refrigeration, foams, aerosol propellants and other applications. Many are chemically stable in the lower atmosphere, so they persist for years or decades instead of breaking down quickly.
  2. Air carries them into the stratosphere. Large-scale circulation gradually transports these persistent gases upward. Their stability at the surface is precisely what allows them to reach the higher atmosphere.
  3. Stratospheric UV releases halogens. Strong ultraviolet light breaks the molecules apart, freeing chlorine and bromine atoms. Initially, much of that halogen is held in relatively inactive “reservoir” compounds rather than attacking ozone immediately.
  4. Antarctic winter isolates and cools the air. The polar vortex forms a large, rotating circulation that limits exchange with air at lower latitudes. During the dark winter, the isolated stratosphere becomes exceptionally cold and polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) can form in the thin, dry air.
  5. Cloud particles activate chlorine. Chemical reactions on PSC surfaces convert reservoir compounds into photochemically active forms, including molecular chlorine. The cloud particles also remove nitrogen compounds that would otherwise tie up reactive chlorine, allowing more of it to remain available when sunlight returns.
  6. Spring sunlight starts rapid destruction. When the Sun rises over Antarctica in late winter and early spring, UV light splits molecular chlorine into chlorine radicals. These radicals react with ozone to form chlorine monoxide and oxygen, and follow-up reactions regenerate the chlorine so it can attack more ozone. Bromine participates in related cycles and can accelerate chlorine-driven loss.
  7. Warming ends the seasonal episode. As spring advances, the stratosphere warms, PSCs disappear and the polar vortex weakens. Ozone-rich air from surrounding latitudes mixes into the polar region, while the activated chemicals disperse. The depleted area then contracts until the next winter prepares a new cycle.

Why catalytic chemistry matters

A catalyst is regenerated rather than consumed in a single reaction. One chlorine or bromine atom can therefore destroy many ozone molecules before it is locked back into a reservoir compound. The Antarctic process is especially efficient because winter clouds perform the activation step over a broad, isolated region, and spring sunlight supplies the energy for repeated reactions.

Why the hole forms over Antarctica

Three conditions coincide over the Antarctic spring: a strong polar vortex, extremely low winter temperatures and the return of sunlight after months of darkness. The vortex keeps the chemically prepared air together, while the cold allows PSCs to form. The timing is crucial: winter provides the cloud surfaces and isolation, but there is too little sunlight for the fastest photochemical loss. Spring supplies sunlight while the vortex is still cold and intact, producing a concentrated burst of depletion.

The Arctic can experience ozone loss when its winter stratosphere is unusually cold, but its vortex is generally more disturbed and its temperatures less persistently low than Antarctica’s. Antarctic geography and circulation make the combination of cold, isolation and spring sunlight unusually reliable each year. The resulting hole is not fixed to the continent’s outline; it can extend over the surrounding Southern Ocean as the vortex shifts.

Why it grows in spring and disappears later

NASA’s Ozone Watch describes growth beginning around August. The area and depth are usually greatest from mid-September through early October, when sunlight has returned but the vortex and cold conditions still support active chemistry. Later in spring, warming weakens the vortex and ends the conditions that sustain PSC-related activation. Mixing with air from lower latitudes then raises column ozone and breaks up the mapped 220-DU region.

Weather affects every season. Colder Antarctic stratospheric conditions generally produce a larger mapped area and lower minimum ozone; warmer or more disturbed conditions can produce a smaller or shorter-lived hole even though the underlying halogen burden changes only slowly. A single year’s maximum is therefore not a standalone measure of long-term recovery.

How scientists measure the ozone hole

Satellites measure ozone through the atmospheric column and allow agencies to draw the contour enclosing values at or below 220 DU. The reported “area” is the surface area inside that contour, not the volume of missing gas and not the size of a literal aperture. Ground-based instruments, balloon soundings and aircraft observations provide independent profiles and chemical evidence.

Several metrics answer different questions:

  • Area: how much territory is enclosed by the 220-DU boundary on a particular day.
  • Minimum ozone: how low the column becomes at the most depleted location.
  • Duration: how long the contour remains below 220 DU.
  • Seasonal average: an average over a stated date window, useful for comparing years without relying on one day’s weather.
  • Stratospheric conditions: temperature, PSC presence and polar-vortex strength, which help explain why one season differs from another.

Comparisons are meaningful only when the same metric, threshold and date window are used. A year can have a modest maximum area but a very low minimum ozone, or a large one-day area that does not persist for long.

What happened in the latest completed season

NASA and NOAA reported the following measurements for the completed 2025 Antarctic season:

Measure 2025 value How to interpret it
Maximum mapped area 8.83 million square miles (22.86 million square kilometres) Largest daily area enclosed by the 220-DU contour, reached on September 9, 2025
Average area, September 7–October 13 7.23 million square miles (18.71 million square kilometres) Fifth-smallest average for that comparison window since 1992

These are 2025 results, not measurements for 2026. At the time covered by the available reporting, the 2026 season was still in progress and had no finalized annual ranking. The figures also do not by themselves separate chemistry from weather; Antarctic temperature and vortex behaviour influence the observed extent each year.

Why the ozone hole matters

With less stratospheric ozone overhead, more UV reaches Earth’s surface. Increased UV exposure raises risks of skin damage, skin cancer and cataracts, and can harm some crops and other biological systems. The ozone hole is not the sole cause of any of these conditions—individual exposure, latitude, season, behaviour and other environmental factors also matter—but depleted ozone removes part of the atmosphere’s normal UV protection.

The largest effects occur under or near the Antarctic hole during the spring season, although ozone-depleting substances have altered ozone levels globally. The issue is therefore both regional and planetary: Antarctic chemistry creates the most dramatic seasonal signal, while the same long-lived compounds have affected the broader ozone layer.

Is the ozone hole getting better?

Yes, the long-term chemical trend is improving, but recovery is gradual and varies by region. The 1987 Montreal Protocol and its later amendments phased out or limited major ozone-depleting substances. Because CFCs and related gases remain in the atmosphere for decades, their decline is slow even after emissions controls take effect.

NASA’s 2025 reporting, citing Stephen Montzka of NOAA’s Global Monitoring Laboratory, said that levels of ozone-depleting substances in the Antarctic stratosphere had fallen by about one-third from their peak around 2000, relative to pre-ozone-hole levels. NASA and NOAA said recovery remains on track later this century. That statement describes the direction of the global and Antarctic assessment; it is not a promise that every year will be smaller than the previous one or that all regions will recover simultaneously.

As halogen concentrations continue to fall, the chemistry that creates the springtime hole should weaken. Natural variability will still produce occasional large or small seasons, so scientists evaluate progress with multi-year trends and consistent measurements rather than a single annual map.

How to interpret claims about a “record” ozone hole

Check four details before drawing a conclusion:

  1. Which metric? A headline may refer to maximum area, minimum ozone or duration; these are not interchangeable.
  2. Which dates? A daily maximum and a September–October average answer different questions.
  3. What were the weather conditions? Cold, persistent vortex conditions can enlarge a hole temporarily.
  4. Is the comparison consistent? The 220-DU threshold and the same seasonal window should be used when ranking years.

A small year does not prove that the problem has ended, and a large year does not prove that the Montreal Protocol failed. The reliable signal is the long-term decline in stratospheric ozone-depleting substances together with gradual recovery in ozone measurements.

Common misconceptions

“There is no ozone above Antarctica.”

False. The term denotes exceptionally low total-column ozone, not complete absence.

“The hole is a permanent opening.”

False. It is seasonal. It develops during the Antarctic winter–spring transition and usually breaks up as the vortex warms and disperses.

“The hole is caused by ordinary air pollution or by climate change alone.”

The key chemical cause is chlorine and bromine released from human-made ozone-depleting substances. Temperature and circulation determine how strongly that chemistry appears in a particular year, while broader climate influences can affect those conditions. Weather is an important modifier, not a replacement for the halogen explanation.

“One year’s map proves the trend.”

It does not. Use consistent multi-year measurements and account for seasonal weather when judging recovery.
