The Nifty Metal Index is NSE Indices’ sector benchmark for Indian metals and mining companies. It is calculated from the free-float market capitalisation of eligible NSE-listed shares, so larger companies receive larger weights rather than every stock receiving an equal allocation. The September 30, 2026 official factsheet reports 15 constituents; a constituent list dated October 11, 2026 names the 15 companies currently shown below. Because membership and weights can change at each review, treat the list and percentages as date-specific rather than live data.
What is the Nifty Metal Index?
NSE Indices describes it as an index designed to reflect “the behaviour and performance of the Metals sector (including mining).” It is therefore a focused sector index, not a measure of the entire Indian stock market and not a list of every company that processes, manufactures or sells metal.
The index groups qualifying metals and mining companies listed on the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). Its calculation uses free-float market capitalisation: the market value of shares that are realistically available for public trading. A company with a larger eligible free-float value generally has a larger index influence. Promoter holdings and other shares not considered freely tradable do not receive the same weight as publicly available shares.

NSE Indices also identifies index-based uses such as portfolio benchmarking and the creation of index funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and structured products. Those uses do not make the index itself an investment recommendation; an investor still needs to assess a particular security or fund, its costs, tracking difference, liquidity, tax treatment and risk.

The first 10 names and their percentages above come from the official Nifty Metal Index factsheet dated September 30, 2026. That factsheet reports 15 constituents in total, but the supplied weight data identifies only its top 10. “Not stated” does not mean a zero weight; it means a percentage was not provided in the cited factsheet extract.
What do the published weights mean?
The September 30, 2026 figures are snapshot weights, not prices or guaranteed allocations for a fund. They change as share prices, free-float shares and index membership change. The three largest positions were Tata Steel at 17.30%, Hindalco Industries at 15.43% and JSW Steel at 13.65%. Together they represented 46.38% when those rounded weights are added. The 10 published positions represented 86.41% on the same arithmetic basis, leaving the remaining five companies with the balance.

This concentration is a direct consequence of free-float capitalisation weighting. A movement in one of the largest companies can affect the index more than a similar percentage movement in a smaller constituent. It also means the index should not be interpreted as an equal-weight basket of 15 stocks.
Do not carry these percentages forward as current weights. A new factsheet, corporate action, price movement or review can change them. For a dated analysis, record the factsheet date alongside every weight and distinguish the price-return index from any total-return version.
How are companies selected?
The methodology starts with the metals sector, including mining. Candidate companies generally need to be members of the Nifty 500 at the review. If fewer than 10 eligible sector companies are available in the Nifty 500, the rules allow the shortfall to be filled with qualifying companies ranked within the top 800 by both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation. Those averages use the preceding six months of data that feed the Nifty 500 rebalancing process.

Trading and listing requirements
- A candidate must have traded on at least 90% of the trading days in the preceding six months.
- It must have a minimum listing history of one month by the applicable cut-off date.
- It must satisfy the sector and ranking conditions used by the index methodology.
After the eligible universe is established, final selection is based on free-float market capitalisation. This process explains why a company may be prominent in the metals industry yet absent from the index: it may fail the sector classification, liquidity, listing-history, ranking or free-float tests at that review.

When is the Nifty Metal Index rebalanced?
NSE Indices reviews the index twice a year. The methodology specifies January 31 and July 31 cut-off dates, using average data for the preceding six months. Four weeks’ notice is given before changes take effect. The review schedule is distinct from day-to-day changes in index weights caused by market prices; a company’s percentage can drift between reviews even when no constituent is added or removed.
At rebalancing, the methodology limits any one constituent to a maximum 33% weight. It also limits the combined weight of the three largest constituents to 62%. These are rebalancing constraints, not a promise that every daily calculation will sit at those exact limits. The September 30, 2026 factsheet’s top three were below both thresholds.

Why did the 2026 list change?
The October 11, 2026 list records an October 4 change: Vedanta Aluminium Metal Ltd. was added and Welspun Corp Ltd. was removed. This is a membership change, not evidence that one company is permanently more representative of metals than the other. Semi-annual reviews apply the eligibility and free-float rules to current data, and companies can enter or leave as their classification, liquidity, listing history or market capitalisation changes.
There is a timing difference between the official factsheet date and the later list. The factsheet is dated September 30, while the list is dated October 11 and reports the October 4 adjustment. When citing the constituents, state the date explicitly and verify the official CSV linked from the Nifty Metal index page before relying on the list as current.
How does the index differ from a broad-market index?
A broad-market index is designed to represent a wide slice of listed companies across sectors. Nifty Metal is intentionally narrower: its exposure is tied to metals and mining businesses and to the selection rules above. That narrower scope can make its behavior more sensitive to steel, aluminium, zinc, copper, iron ore and other commodity-linked conditions, as well as company-specific events. The index methodology itself does not provide a guarantee that all metals prices or all metal companies will move in the same direction.

When comparing Nifty Metal with another sector or market index, use matching information:
- Coverage: compare the sectors represented and the number of constituents.
- Weighting: check whether each index uses free-float capitalisation, full market capitalisation or equal weighting, and measure concentration in the largest holdings.
- Review rules: compare eligibility screens, liquidity tests, caps and review dates.
- Return type: compare a price-return index with another price-return index, or a total-return index with another total-return index, over the same dates.
The factsheet identifies a Nifty Metal Total Returns Index variant. A total-return calculation generally accounts for distributions under its methodology, while a price-return series reflects price changes; mixing the two can produce a misleading comparison.
Can you invest directly in the Nifty Metal Index?
An index is a calculation, not a share that can be purchased directly. Exposure may be available through an index fund, ETF or structured product that uses the index as its benchmark or underlying reference. NSE Indices lists such product applications and names ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund and Mirae Asset Mutual Fund among ETF issuers on its index materials, but product availability, tracking method, fees, liquidity and tax treatment must be checked with the issuer and for the relevant market date.

A do-it-yourself basket may have different weights, omit constituents, incur separate trading costs and create concentration that does not match the index’s free-float calculation. Conversely, a fund can have tracking difference, cash holdings, expenses or rebalance timing that causes its return to differ from the index.
What should you check before using the constituent list?
- Confirm the date. Write down whether the list comes from the September 30 factsheet, the October 11 secondary list or a newer official file.
- Verify membership. Open the current constituent file linked on the official Nifty Metal page, especially around a review or reported change.
- Use matching weights. Do not combine September 30 weights with a later membership list and call the result a live portfolio.
- Identify the return series. Check whether the performance number is for the price index or the Nifty Metal Total Returns Index.
- Check the vehicle. For a fund or ETF, read the current factsheet for fees, tracking difference, portfolio limits, liquidity and risks rather than assuming it replicates every index detail perfectly.
Where can the official methodology and list be checked?
The primary reference is NSE Indices’ Nifty Metal Index Factsheet, dated September 30, 2026. The index description, methodology links and constituent-file access are on the Nifty Metal index page. The October 11, 2026 list used for the 15 names above is available from IndexPE; use it as a dated reference and cross-check the official file for the latest membership.
The Bottom Line
Nifty Metal is a free-float-market-capitalisation-weighted NSE sector index covering Indian metals and mining stocks. It had 15 constituents in the September 30, 2026 factsheet, while the October 11 list records Vedanta Aluminium Metal’s addition and Welspun Corp’s removal. Membership and weights are reviewed semi-annually and should always be checked against the latest official constituent file.
