The Nasdaq Composite is a broad stock index covering domestic and international common-type stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Nasdaq reported 3,393 components on October 12, 2026. Because the index weights companies by total listed market capitalization, its largest companies generally have the greatest influence on its day-to-day movement. Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon appeared among the largest holdings in a recent ETF snapshot, but that snapshot does not establish the Composite’s exact current top five or their index weights.

What the Nasdaq Composite measures

The Nasdaq Composite measures common-type stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, including issuers based in the United States and abroad. Nasdaq Global Indexes defines it as measuring “all Nasdaq domestic and international based common type stocks listed on The Nasdaq Stock Market.” Nasdaq’s index overview reported 3,393 components on October 12, 2026.

The key boundary is the listing venue: a company’s stock must be listed on Nasdaq and meet the index’s basic requirements. The Composite is not a list of only technology companies, and it is not limited to the 100 largest Nasdaq-listed businesses. It includes eligible companies of different sizes and from different sectors, so its coverage is much broader than a large-company index.

That breadth does not mean every company has equal influence. The index is weighted by market capitalization, so large companies can matter far more than small ones even when there are thousands of constituents. A large component’s price move can outweigh the combined effect of many smaller components.

How weighting determines which stocks move the index

Nasdaq describes the Composite as market-capitalization weighted. For weighting purposes, a constituent’s total listed market capitalization is based on its share price multiplied by its total shares outstanding. Nasdaq’s June 2026 comparison says the Composite does not adjust this figure for public float and does not impose a concentration cap that limits the influence of an individual company.

The practical intuition is straightforward: if a stock accounts for a larger share of the index’s total market value, a given percentage change in that stock tends to have a larger effect on the index than the same percentage change in a smaller constituent. As a simplified illustration, a 1% move in a company with a 5% index weight would contribute roughly five times as much as a 1% move in a company with a 1% weight, before accounting for changes elsewhere in the index. Those percentages are illustrative, not current Nasdaq Composite weights.

Market capitalization weighting is different from counting companies or averaging their share prices. A stock with a high per-share price is not automatically more influential: the company’s total market value is what matters. Likewise, a long list of small constituents can broaden representation without giving each company enough weight to offset a very large constituent’s move.

Why the absence of a float adjustment matters

Some indexes use only shares considered available for public trading when calculating company weight. Nasdaq says the Composite uses total listed market capitalization without a float adjustment. That means its weighting basis is not reduced to exclude shares that are not part of the public float. This is a methodological distinction, not a claim that every company’s shares trade equally often or that every share is readily available to investors.

Why concentration matters

With no concentration cap, the largest companies can account for a substantial portion of the index’s movement. Nasdaq’s October 2023 research paper reported Apple at 12.90% and Microsoft at 12.14% of index weight at that time, and said the ten largest constituents together represented more than 52%. Those figures describe the index in October 2023 only; they should not be used as today’s weights or rankings.

Which stocks affect the Nasdaq Composite most now?

The likely major drivers are the very large companies with substantial market values among the eligible Nasdaq-listed constituents. A Fidelity Nasdaq Composite Index Tracking ETF (ONEQ) holdings snapshot updated October 9, 2026 listed Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon among its largest holdings. These names are useful indicators of companies to watch, but the ETF snapshot is not an official Nasdaq constituent-weight file.

In particular, the available snapshot does not verify an exact current ordering, percentage weight, or definitive “top five” for the Composite. ONEQ is linked to the index, but the fund’s reported holdings and weights need not exactly match Nasdaq’s index basket at a given moment. Nasdaq’s overview reported 3,393 index components, while the cited fund snapshot covered a much smaller set. Do not transfer a fund weight to the index or treat a fund ranking as the official Composite ranking.

The effect of a stock also depends on what it does during the period being measured. A company can be among the largest constituents but have little effect on a particular day if its share price barely changes. A smaller company can make headlines with a dramatic percentage move yet contribute less to the index because its weight is much lower. To understand a day’s index move, both weight and price change matter.

How to verify an exact ranking

For exact current constituents and weights, use Nasdaq’s Global Index Watch interface or a dated Nasdaq constituent-weight file. Nasdaq’s public weighting page showed data dated October 12, 2026, but indicated that full access requires login or registration. Nasdaq describes its daily pro forma data as indicative, subject to change, and supplied on an as-is basis. The precise current ranking and percentages cannot be established from the public figures cited here.

How the Nasdaq Composite differs from the Nasdaq-100

The Nasdaq Composite and the Nasdaq-100 are separate indexes with different coverage and weighting rules. The Composite is the broad measure of eligible Nasdaq-listed common-type stocks. The Nasdaq-100 tracks 100 large non-financial companies and applies eligibility rules, seasoning requirements, reconstitution rules, and modified weighting with concentration controls.

Feature Nasdaq Composite Nasdaq-100
Coverage Eligible domestic and international common-type stocks listed on Nasdaq; Nasdaq reported 3,393 components on October 12, 2026. 100 large non-financial companies.
Selection approach No selection screen beyond basic listing requirements, according to Nasdaq’s June 2026 comparison. Separate eligibility, seasoning, and reconstitution rules.
New listings Nasdaq says a new listing enters on its second trading day. Subject to separate seasoning and eligibility rules.
Weighting Total listed market capitalization; no float adjustment or concentration cap. Modified weighting and concentration controls.
Potential performance drivers Large companies as well as smaller constituents, financial companies, and newly listed companies that qualify. Large non-financial companies that meet the index’s rules.

The distinctions help explain why the two indexes can move in the same direction yet deliver different returns over a period. A change in smaller companies or financial companies can affect the Composite without affecting the Nasdaq-100 in the same way. A newly listed company may enter the Composite quickly under its stated second-trading-day rule, while Nasdaq-100 eligibility and seasoning rules can produce a different outcome. Differences in weighting and concentration controls also change how strongly the biggest names influence each index.

Nasdaq says many Nasdaq-linked investment products track the Nasdaq-100, while the market figure commonly displayed as “NASDAQ” refers to the Composite. A product’s marketing name or the fact that it invests in Nasdaq-listed stocks does not, by itself, identify the benchmark it follows. Check the benchmark named in the fund’s official documents before comparing its performance with an index.

What the component count does—and does not—tell you

The count of 3,393 components gives a dated measure of the index’s breadth, not a measure of how evenly its risk or influence is distributed. It does not mean that each company contributes one three-thousand-three-hundred-ninety-third of the index’s movement. Market-cap weighting makes the contribution uneven, and the largest companies may dominate a given period.

The count is also time-sensitive. Nasdaq’s figure is dated October 12, 2026; it is not a permanent property of the index. Listings, eligibility, and other membership changes can affect the total. When precision matters, state the date next to the count rather than presenting it as an undated current constant.

Using the index figure when evaluating an investment

The Composite is an index, not a stock that can be purchased directly. An investment product may seek to track it, but readers should confirm the stated benchmark and review the product’s holdings rather than assuming that every Nasdaq-focused fund follows the same index. Nasdaq’s overview lists ONEQ as a product linked to the Composite; its holdings snapshot can offer a practical view of exposure, but it should not substitute for the official index constituent file when the question is exact index membership or weight.

For a quick comparison, identify the exact index name first, then match the date and data source. If a fund follows the Nasdaq-100, a comparison with the Composite is not like-for-like: the indexes differ in number of constituents, sector eligibility, listing-entry rules, and weighting. A benchmark mismatch can make an investment appear to diverge even when the product is behaving consistently with its own stated index.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Equating Nasdaq with technology. The Composite is defined by eligible Nasdaq listings and common-type stock status, not by a technology-sector-only rule.
  • Treating the Nasdaq-100 as the Composite. They have different constituents and methodologies; confirm the index named in an investment product’s documents.
  • Assuming all constituents matter equally. Total market capitalization, not company count or share price alone, determines relative influence.
  • Calling an ETF snapshot the official index ranking. ONEQ’s October 9, 2026 holdings make its largest names a current indicator, not a definitive list of the Composite’s top constituents or weights.
  • Reusing historical weights as current data. Apple’s 12.90% and Microsoft’s 12.14% weights, along with the top ten’s more-than-52% share, are Nasdaq-reported October 2023 figures.
  • Quoting a component total without a date. Nasdaq’s 3,393 figure is specifically dated October 12, 2026.
