The small ring on a Leatherman multi-tool is a carry and retention attachment point. It is designed to accept a lanyard and, depending on the accessory, a carabiner, keychain, or sling. It keeps the tool accessible and can reduce the chance of dropping or misplacing it during ordinary carry. It is not documented as climbing, fall-arrest, or other life-safety equipment: the official product information reviewed does not publish a load rating or life-safety certification.

What the ring is for

A lanyard ring gives you an external attachment point without changing how the multi-tool’s blades, pliers, drivers, or other implements operate. The connector stays outside the tool while the tool is folded, allowing you to carry it on a cord, clip, or strap and retrieve it quickly.

Leatherman describes its quick-release ring as a way to keep a multi-tool close at hand when it is clipped to “a lanyard, carabiner, or sling.” Its two-screw ring is described as a loop for “a carabiner, keychain, or lanyard.” Those descriptions establish the intended use: ordinary transport and retention, not supporting a person or securing a load.

What it does not establish

  • The product descriptions do not state a maximum attached weight or breaking strength.
  • They do not certify the ring for climbing, rappelling, fall protection, rescue loads, or any other life-safety application.
  • A carabiner attached to the ring does not turn the multi-tool into certified safety gear. Use the ring only for carrying the tool unless a separate, authoritative specification says otherwise.

Choose the correct ring for your model

Leatherman carry accessories are model-specific. Before ordering or installing anything, read the exact model name on the tool, packaging, or its documentation and compare it with the accessory’s compatibility list. Similar-looking tools can use different attachment points or screw patterns.

How to use a quick-release lanyard ring

A quick-release version is intended for users who want to remove the tool from its carrying connector without undoing a permanent screw-mounted part. The exact release action depends on the accessory’s design, so follow the instructions supplied with that ring.

  1. Confirm the model. Match the name and version of your multi-tool to the ring’s current compatibility listing. If the title and “Works with” list differ, use the narrower “Works with” list or contact the manufacturer before purchasing.
  2. Attach the carrying connector. Pass the lanyard loop, carabiner, or sling connector through the ring as designed. Make sure the connector closes fully and is not merely resting against the edge.
  3. Check clearance. Fold and unfold the tool while it is attached. Position the cord or clip so it does not block a handle, catch on an implement, or interfere with opening and closing.
  4. Test retention by hand. Hold the connector and move the tool gently through the range of motion you expect during normal carry. Stop if the ring twists, the release mechanism opens unexpectedly, or the connector rubs against a sharp edge.
  5. Use the release deliberately. Keep the connector attached when you need retention. Release it only when you are intentionally separating the tool from the lanyard, carabiner, or sling.

How to install a two-screw ring

Two-screw models provide a fixed loop attachment. The Two-Screw Lanyard Ring is specified to use two T6 screws, and the FREE K-Series kit includes the screws and a Torx T6 wrench.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify compatibility before disassembly. Confirm that the ring is listed for your exact model. Do not force a screw pattern or substitute screws from another accessory.
  2. Gather the correct tool. Use a Torx T6 driver or the supplied T6 wrench. A mismatched bit can damage the small screw heads and make later removal difficult.
  3. Align the ring. Place the ring over the designated mounting holes, keeping it flush and oriented so the loop will not obstruct the tool’s handles or implements.
  4. Start both screws by hand. Turn each screw a few threads before tightening either one fully. This keeps the ring aligned and reduces the chance of cross-threading.
  5. Tighten evenly. Alternate between the two screws with the T6 tool until the ring is seated. The manufacturer describes the installation as “two T6 screws for a solid, precise fit,” but the reviewed pages do not publish a torque value. Do not guess at a torque specification or use excessive force.
  6. Check operation. Open and close the multi-tool, inspect the screw heads, and confirm that the ring does not move independently of the body.
  7. Add your connector. Thread a lanyard or attach a suitable carabiner or keychain through the loop. Confirm that the connector’s gate or clasp is completely closed.

Picking a carry method

Lanyard

A cord or wrist lanyard is useful when you want the tool to remain attached while working with one hand or while moving around a site. Select a connector that fits through the ring without forcing it, and keep the cord short enough that it cannot snag nearby equipment. The ring’s purpose is retention of the tool; it is not evidence that the cord itself has a certified strength rating.

Carabiner

A carabiner provides fast clipping to a belt loop, pack webbing, or another carry point. Use a carabiner appropriate for ordinary accessory carry and make sure its gate closes completely after clipping through the ring. Do not infer climbing or fall-arrest capability from the carabiner’s shape or from the presence of the ring.

Keychain

The two-screw ring is specifically described as accepting a keychain. A key ring can be convenient for a small tool such as the FREE T2, but make sure keys do not press against a blade or other implement in a way that could cause accidental opening.

Sling

A sling can keep a larger multi-tool close to a bag or body while leaving it accessible. Arrange the sling so the tool hangs in a predictable orientation and does not swing into equipment, machinery, or a surface that could damage it.

Model-specific compatibility notes

Wave, Charge, and Surge families

The quick-release listing is associated with Wave Plus, Wave Alpha, Charge-family tools, and Surge in its title, while the current “Works with” section lists Wave Plus. That inconsistency matters: a ring that fits one generation may not fit another. Check the exact product page and model marking rather than relying on a family name alone.

ARC, Bond, Curl, and FREE T2

The two-screw ring is listed for ARC, Bond, Curl, and FREE T2. It uses two T6 screws, so installation requires access to the correct screw heads and a T6 driver or wrench.

FREE K2X and FREE K4X

The FREE K-Series kit is listed for FREE K2X and FREE K4X. It is the most complete package in the reviewed group because it includes both a lanyard ring and a pocket clip, along with two T6 screws and a Torx T6 wrench.

Safety and load limits

The absence of a published load rating is itself an important limit. Use the ring to carry the multi-tool, not to suspend equipment, restrain a person, arrest a fall, or support body weight. Avoid connecting it to systems where failure could cause injury or loss of critical gear.

Inspect the whole carrying system, not just the ring. A worn cord, bent carabiner gate, damaged screw head, or cracked attachment point can fail before the ring does. Replace a damaged accessory rather than attempting to straighten or repair it in a way the manufacturer has not specified.

Inspection and maintenance

No inspection interval is published for these accessories, so inspect them at sensible points: after installation, after unusually rough handling, and periodically during regular carry.

  • Look for looseness, rotation, cracks, deformation, corrosion, or sharp burrs.
  • On two-screw versions, check that both screw heads remain seated and that the ring does not rock under light hand pressure.
  • On quick-release versions, confirm that the release remains fully engaged and does not open from normal movement.
  • Check the lanyard, carabiner, key ring, or sling for wear separately.
  • Clean dirt from the attachment area before inspection so debris is not mistaken for a tight fit.

Troubleshooting common problems

The ring will not fit

Stop forcing it. Recheck the exact model and accessory listing, including generation or suffix. A family name such as “Charge” or “FREE” may cover several tools with different attachment arrangements.

The screws will not start

Remove the ring and inspect alignment and thread condition. Start both screws by hand with the ring held flat, then tighten alternately. If a screw head is already damaged, use the correct replacement specified for that accessory rather than substituting a random fastener.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ring loosens during carry

Stop carrying the tool until you can inspect the screws or release mechanism. For a two-screw model, check that the ring is seated and both screws are present; for a quick-release model, verify that the mechanism is fully engaged. The product pages reviewed do not provide a user torque value, so do not compensate by overtightening.

The tool is difficult to open

Reposition the lanyard, sling, or carabiner so it is not pressing across a handle or implement. The connector should attach through the ring while leaving the tool’s normal opening path clear.

The accessory is unavailable

Availability and backorder status are volatile. Recheck the official listing for the correct model rather than buying an apparently similar ring with an unverified fit.

A practical selection checklist

  • Read the model marking on your multi-tool.
  • Choose quick-release if removable carry is the priority; choose a two-screw ring if you want a fixed loop.
  • Confirm the exact compatibility list, especially where a product title and “Works with” section differ.
  • Check whether you need only a ring or also a pocket clip and T6 wrench.
  • Decide whether your connector is a lanyard, carabiner, keychain, or sling and verify that it fits the loop.
  • Plan a quick inspection after installation and during continued carry.
  • Keep the system for ordinary transport and retention; do not use it as life-safety hardware.

Bottom line

The little ring is a dedicated carry point. Match the accessory to the exact Leatherman model, use the supplied T6 hardware on two-screw versions, attach a compatible lanyard, carabiner, keychain, or sling, and keep the tool’s opening path clear. Because no load rating or life-safety certification is published for the researched rings, treat them as carry accessories rather than load-bearing safety equipment.
