The iPhone App Store is Apple’s digital storefront for finding, buying, and downloading apps on an iPhone. It is also part of Apple’s wider app-distribution system: developers submit apps through App Store Connect, and Apple reviews submissions under its App Review process. That review is a screening step, not a guarantee that an app is safe, error-free, or right for every user.
What does the iPhone App Store do?
On an iPhone, the App Store is the built-in marketplace where you can browse app listings, download apps, and purchase apps or certain features and services offered inside them. Apple uses the App Store across more than just iPhone; its service also covers iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch. Apple describes the App Store as a way for users to discover, purchase, and download apps across those platforms.

“App Store” can refer to the storefront app you open on an iPhone, or to Apple’s broader marketplace and distribution service. In everyday iPhone use, it usually means the storefront app.
How do apps get into the App Store?
Developers use App Store Connect to submit apps and manage app-related materials. Apple reviews apps and certain related submissions—including updates and in-app purchase materials—against technical, content, and design criteria. The specific items reviewed depend on the submission and the rules that apply. Apple’s App Review information explains the process and its guidelines.

- Consumables: Items or credits that can be used up, such as game currency.
- Non-consumables: A purchase that unlocks something intended to remain available, such as a feature.
- Auto-renewable subscriptions: Access that renews automatically at the end of each billing period unless canceled.
- Non-renewing subscriptions: Time-limited access that does not renew automatically.
These are categories in Apple’s purchase system, not a complete account of every way apps may earn revenue in every country. Apple’s getting-started guide outlines its documented app business models and in-app purchase types.
Is Apple’s App Store the only way to install iPhone apps?
Not necessarily, but alternatives are geographically limited and subject to conditions. Apple documents alternative distribution and payment options in certain eligible regions. Its distribution overview says that, in eligible regions, apps for platforms other than macOS may be distributed through a website or an alternative marketplace after validation and notarization. Availability and requirements depend on the region and applicable terms; these options should not be treated as available to every iPhone user or as identical to App Store distribution.
