The Galaxy Z Fold Taskbar is a built-in software dock along the bottom of the phone’s unfolded inner display. When it is enabled and an app or window is open, it gives you quick access to selected favorite apps and, optionally, recent apps. You can also drag an icon into a screen drop zone to start Multi window or save a frequently used split-screen combination as an app pair.
It is designed for the large inner screen, not the Cover screen. Samsung’s current support guidance says the Taskbar is not compatible with the Cover screen and cannot be enabled or disabled from it.
What the Galaxy Z Fold Taskbar contains
Think of the Taskbar as a persistent, PC-style launcher that appears only in the context where multitasking is useful: the unfolded display with an app or window open. It sits at the lower edge of that display and remains available while you switch between supported apps.
On current Galaxy Z Fold implementations, Samsung specifies eight Taskbar positions in total: six positions for apps you select and two positions for recent apps when that option is enabled. The exact appearance, labels and behavior can vary with the Fold model and One UI version, but the basic division between selected apps and optional recent apps is the same in Samsung’s current documentation.

- Selected apps: These mirror the apps in the Home-screen Favourites bar. Changing that bar changes the Taskbar’s selected-app icons.
- Recent apps: A separate setting can add recent applications to the Taskbar. You can turn this part off or control how many recent icons appear where your software version provides that control.
- Multi window drop targets: Dragging an icon upward, downward, to either side or toward the center of the inner display lets you place an app in a Multi window layout.
- Saved app pairs: A two-app split-screen arrangement can be saved and launched later from one Taskbar icon.
This is a phone feature supplied by the Fold’s software. You do not need a dock, keyboard, accessory or separate download to use it.
How it works when you are using the inner display
Switching to a selected app
Open an app on the unfolded main display. If the Taskbar is enabled, its icons appear at the bottom. Tap a selected-app icon to switch to that app or launch it if it is not already open. This is faster than returning to the Home screen, opening the app drawer and finding the same application.
The selected icons are not managed from a separate Taskbar-only list. They are tied to the Home-screen Favourites bar, so the most reliable way to change them is to edit that bar directly.
Using recent-app icons
Recent apps are optional. With the recent-app control enabled, the Taskbar can show recent applications alongside your selected favorites. This is useful when you are moving among a small set of apps for a short task, while favorites-only mode keeps the dock more predictable. The six selected positions and two recent positions are the current Galaxy Z Fold arrangement described by Samsung; older or different One UI releases may expose the controls differently.
Starting Multi window by dragging
The Taskbar is more than an app launcher because its icons can be used as drag-and-drop sources for Multi window.

- Open the first app on the unfolded display.
- Press and hold the second app’s Taskbar icon.
- Drag the icon to the highlighted placement area at the top, bottom, left, right or center of the screen.
- Release the icon when the desired drop zone is shown. The Fold places the second app in a Multi window arrangement with the first app.
The available result depends on the drop zone and the Fold’s current layout. Dragging to an edge is the practical choice for a side-by-side or stacked split, while the center target can produce the layout offered by that One UI release.
Saving a two-app combination
If you repeatedly use the same pair, save it instead of rebuilding the split every time.

- Tap the divider between the two apps.
- Choose the app-pair star option in the divider controls.
- Save the pair to the Taskbar when prompted.
- Later, tap the saved pair’s icon. Both apps open together in the saved arrangement.
The saved item represents the combination, not merely a shortcut to one application. It is therefore useful for recurring workflows such as reading in one pane while taking notes in the other, provided both apps support the selected Multi window layout.
How to turn the Taskbar on or off
Samsung’s current path is Settings > Display > Taskbar. On supported Galaxy Z Fold models, Samsung says the feature is enabled by default, but the switch can be turned off if you prefer an unobstructed lower edge.
- Unfold the phone so you are working on the main inner display.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Taskbar.
- Turn the main Taskbar switch on or off.
Menu wording and the location of secondary controls can differ by model and One UI version. If you do not see a Taskbar entry under Display, first confirm that the phone is a Galaxy Z Fold model with a software version that supports the feature; the tablet Taskbar is a different implementation.

Customize which icons appear
Change the selected apps through the Favourites bar
Because selected Taskbar apps mirror the Home-screen Favourites bar, edit that bar to change the dock:
- Go to a Home-screen page that shows the Favourites bar.
- Press and hold an app icon you want to keep available.
- Drag it into the Favourites area.
- To remove an existing favorite, drag it out of that area or use the available Remove command.
The change is reflected in the selected-app portion of the Taskbar. If an icon seems missing, check the Favourites bar before assuming the Taskbar itself is malfunctioning.
Choose whether to show recent apps
In Settings > Display > Taskbar, look for Show recent apps or the similarly named suggested-app control. Turn it on when you want recent applications beside your selected favorites; turn it off for a favorites-only dock. Some releases also let you choose how many recent suggestions are shown. The available control depends on the Fold model and One UI version.
Adjust touch-and-hold visibility with swipe navigation
On Fold4 instructions that use swipe navigation, Samsung provides a Show and hide with touch and hold control for the lower Taskbar area. When that option is available, touch and hold the lower area to reveal or hide the bar instead of leaving it continuously visible. This setting is not necessarily presented with the same name on every model or software release.
Why the Taskbar is not showing
Work through these checks in order. They separate normal design limits from a disabled setting.

Check the screen you are using
The Taskbar is intended for the unfolded inner display. Samsung explicitly says it is not compatible with the Cover screen and cannot be enabled or disabled from that screen. If you are looking at the narrow outside display, no setting will make the Taskbar appear there; unfold the phone and continue on the main display.
Open an app or window
The bar appears while an app or window is open on the unfolded display. If you are only viewing the Home screen, there may be no Taskbar to display. Launch an app, then look along the bottom edge.
Verify the main switch
On the inner display, open Settings > Display > Taskbar and confirm the main switch is on. If it was disabled, re-enabling it restores the dock without changing your Home-screen favorites.
Check whether it is hidden by a visibility setting
If you use swipe navigation and enabled a touch-and-hold visibility control, the Taskbar may be intentionally hidden. Touch and hold the lower Taskbar area as directed by that option, or return to the Taskbar settings and change the visibility behavior.
Check the source of the icons
A blank or unexpected selected-app area usually points to the Home-screen Favourites bar. Add the desired apps to that bar, remove unwanted ones, and then reopen an app on the inner display. If you are looking for recent icons, verify that Show recent apps or the suggested-app control is enabled; recent apps are not required to appear in favorites-only mode.

Account for model and One UI differences
Samsung notes that exact menus and slot behavior can vary by model and One UI version. The Taskbar is supported in Flex mode on Galaxy Z Fold devices, but a control described in one model’s instructions may be named or placed differently in another. Install the software version available for your device and use the labels actually shown under Display rather than expecting an older guide’s wording.

Do not apply the tablet slot count to a Fold phone. Samsung describes four Taskbar app slots for Galaxy tablets, while Galaxy Z Fold models use eight total positions in the current implementation.
What the Taskbar cannot do
- It cannot be used on the Cover screen.
- It cannot be enabled or disabled from the Cover screen.
- It does not add hardware or storage; it is a software interface.
- It does not guarantee that every app will support every Multi window arrangement. The available layout still depends on the app and the One UI version.
The practical boundary is simple: use the unfolded display for the Taskbar, app dragging and saved pairs; use the Cover screen without expecting that dock to be present.
Using the Taskbar efficiently
Keep high-frequency apps in favorites
Use the Favourites bar for applications you open regardless of what you used last. This keeps their positions stable and makes muscle-memory taps possible.
Enable recents for temporary projects
Turn on recent apps when you are switching among a changing group of applications, such as a short research session. Turn it back off when changing suggestions make the dock harder to scan.
Save only repeatable pairs
App-pair shortcuts are most valuable for combinations you open repeatedly. For one-off comparisons, dragging an icon is faster than creating a saved item you will rarely use.
Use the unfolded display before troubleshooting
Many apparent failures are simply the Taskbar being sought on the Cover screen or while no app is open. Establish the correct screen and context first, then inspect the switch and visibility controls.
