The Emirates Mission to Explore the Asteroid Belt (EMA) is a planned United Arab Emirates deep-space expedition. Its spacecraft, MBR Explorer, is scheduled for launch in the first quarter of 2028. The flight plan uses gravity assists at Venus, Earth and Mars, then sends the spacecraft past six main-belt asteroids before a rendezvous with asteroid (269) Justitia and deployment of a lander. The mission is intended to investigate water-rich asteroids, their physical properties and their potential value for future space activity. Every date and event remains a plan; EMA has not yet produced scientific results.
What EMA is—and what it is not
EMA is the UAE’s planned mission to explore the asteroid belt, the region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter that contains millions of rocky bodies. The mission’s spacecraft is named MBR Explorer. The name honors Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The published concept combines a long planetary cruise, remote observations of several asteroids and a close investigation of one final target. Six asteroids are scheduled for flybys. The seventh target, (269) Justitia, is the destination for a rendezvous and a planned lander deployment.

How the 13-year mission is organized
The UAE Space Agency describes a total program lasting about 13 years: six years for spacecraft design and development, followed by seven years of flight and exploration. The figures are planning estimates, not elapsed mission time or guaranteed deadlines.

How gravity assists will carry the spacecraft to the asteroid belt
Why the mission does not simply fly straight outward
A direct route to the asteroid belt would require the spacecraft to supply all of the velocity and trajectory change with its own propulsion. EMA instead plans a sequence of planetary flybys. During a gravity assist, the spacecraft passes a planet on a carefully calculated path and exchanges a small amount of momentum with the planet’s orbital motion. In the Sun-centered frame, that encounter can increase or decrease the spacecraft’s speed and rotate its trajectory without consuming an equivalent amount of propellant.

The planned assist sequence
- Venus: the first listed planetary assist helps reshape the outbound trajectory inside the inner Solar System.
- Earth: a later Earth flyby provides another opportunity to adjust speed and direction while mission controllers refine the interplanetary path.
- Mars: the planned Mars encounter completes the stated sequence of planetary assists before the asteroid tour.
The UAE Space Agency gives the planned journey as approximately five billion kilometres. That is the spacecraft’s stated mission route, not a straight-line distance between Earth and the targets. The long path reflects the orbital geometry and timing needed to reach multiple asteroids with a practical trajectory.
What a gravity assist requires operationally
Each flyby has to occur inside a narrow corridor of position, timing and velocity. Navigation teams track the spacecraft, update its predicted path and schedule any trajectory corrections before the encounter. A successful assist does not mean the spacecraft stops at the planet; it passes through the planetary system and leaves on a new solar orbit that is better aligned with the next mission segment.
What happens during the six asteroid flybys
The first six asteroid encounters are planned as close flybys rather than landings. MBR Explorer will approach each object, point its instruments at the surface and continue along its trajectory. A flyby permits observations of multiple bodies without the propellant, navigation and surface-contact requirements of a landing.

The flyby sequence is scientifically useful because asteroids are not all alike. Comparing several bodies can show how composition, surface structure and thermal behavior vary across the belt. The mission plan therefore treats the six encounters as a coordinated tour, not six unrelated snapshots.

Which instruments MBR Explorer will use
Agency descriptions identify four principal instrument types. Together they combine reflected-light imaging with infrared measurements that reveal information invisible to an ordinary camera.

Combining the datasets is important. An image can show a bright patch or a fracture, while spectroscopy can test whether the area has a different mineral signature. Thermal measurements help distinguish a loose, insulating surface from a compact or rockier one. The agency says the overall instrument suite is intended to address surface composition, geology, interior density, temperature and thermophysical properties.
Why water-rich asteroids are a central target
The UAE Space Agency lists the origins and evolution of water-rich asteroids among EMA’s main science goals. Asteroids that contain hydrated minerals or other water-bearing material can preserve evidence about how the early Solar System formed and how volatile compounds were distributed.
“Water-rich” does not necessarily mean an asteroid has a liquid reservoir that can be pumped out. Water may be chemically bound inside minerals or present as ice under particular conditions. Remote spectra, thermal data and geological images can help researchers determine what kind of material is present and how it is distributed.

The mission also aims to assess asteroid resource potential. That means characterizing composition, accessibility-relevant physical properties and the environment around candidate bodies. It does not mean EMA will mine an asteroid, extract water or prove that a commercial resource is practical.

From a fast encounter to a sustained investigation
A flyby offers only a short observation window. A rendezvous requires MBR Explorer to reduce its relative speed and enter a controlled trajectory around the target. Remaining near Justitia would allow repeated observations from changing viewing angles and lighting conditions, improving the interpretation of surface and thermal data.
The planned lander
After the rendezvous, the mission plan calls for MBR Explorer to release a lander for close study of Justitia. The UAE Space Agency announced a lander design and development agreement with the Technology Innovation Institute in January 2025. A lander can examine the surface at contact distance and provide measurements that a passing or orbiting spacecraft cannot obtain as directly.
Public official material gives two different endpoint years. The UAE Government platform describes a planned landing in 2033, while UAE Space Agency material places the seventh-asteroid encounter and Justitia landing in 2034. Because these are inconsistent planning descriptions, the final landing should be described as expected in the 2033–2034 timeframe rather than assigned a definitive year.

Current status and schedule certainty
In an April 2026 update, the UAE Space Agency said MBR Explorer had entered full-scale hardware realization. Subsystems were being assembled, integrated and tested, and the agency continued to list Q1 2028 as the launch period.
- Reported current phase: spacecraft hardware assembly, integration and testing.
- Planned launch: first quarter of 2028.
- First planned asteroid encounter: February 2030, according to the agency overview.
- Planned target count: six flyby asteroids plus Justitia as the seventh target.
- Final landing date: uncertain because official sources cite 2033 and 2034.
Launch windows, planetary geometry, spacecraft readiness and later navigation decisions can all change a deep-space schedule. The dates above should therefore be read as the UAE’s published plan, not as completed milestones.
How the mission supports UAE space capabilities
EMA is also a national capability program. The agency links it to developing UAE engineering and scientific expertise, expanding academic programs, encouraging private-sector participation and building international partnerships. Designing and operating a multi-planet, multi-asteroid mission requires skills in spacecraft systems, flight dynamics, planetary science, software, communications and mission operations.
Those institutional goals are separate from the scientific results. A successful technology and workforce program could be valuable even while individual asteroid hypotheses remain under investigation.
What readers should watch for as EMA progresses
- Hardware milestones: movement from subsystem assembly and integration into completed environmental and functional testing.
- Launch confirmation: a firm launch date and any changes to the Q1 2028 target.
- Trajectory updates: the final timing of the Venus, Earth and Mars assists and the resulting asteroid encounter sequence.
- Instrument commissioning: confirmation that the cameras and infrared spectrometers are operating after launch.
- Encounter results: images and spectra from the six flybys, followed by navigation updates for Justitia.
- Landing plan: clarification of whether the endpoint remains 2033 or shifts to 2034.
Why EMA matters
EMA is significant because it attempts a demanding combination: planetary gravity assists, a tour of six asteroids, a rendezvous with a seventh body and a lander deployment. Scientifically, the mission could improve understanding of water-bearing asteroid material and how asteroid surfaces behave. Strategically, it gives the UAE experience in deep-space spacecraft development, international mission coordination and long-duration operations.
Until MBR Explorer launches and returns data, the appropriate conclusion is prospective: EMA is a carefully staged plan to study asteroid diversity and resource-relevant properties, not evidence that asteroid resources have already been found or made usable.
