The Earthshot Prize is a global environmental award founded by HRH Prince William in 2020. Its goal is to find, recognize and help scale practical solutions capable of repairing the planet by 2030. Each year, five winners—one for each Earthshot goal—receive a catalytic £1 million grant, while all 15 finalists receive a year of tailored support and access to the Prize’s partner network.
The program is designed as more than an awards ceremony: it combines worldwide nominations, evidence-based assessment, a staged shortlist, funding and a Global Alliance intended to help promising environmental work reach many more people.
What the Earthshot Prize is
The Earthshot Prize is an annual environmental award and scaling program. Prince William founded it in 2020 with a ten-year mission: make the period to 2030 a decade of accelerated environmental repair. Rather than honor only a lifetime of achievement, the Prize looks for solutions that are already showing evidence of success and could produce much larger environmental benefits if they gain finance, partnerships, policy backing or wider adoption.
Its work is organized around five “Earthshots,” each describing a major planetary challenge: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix Our Climate. Five winners are chosen every year, one in each category.

The distinction matters. The Prize is not simply a trophy or a one-time publicity campaign. Its stated primary purpose is to accelerate the solutions after selection, using grant money, a year-long fellowship and a network of public, private and philanthropic partners.
How the Earthshot Prize process works
The selection cycle moves from a large global search to 15 finalists and then five winners.
1. Solutions are found and nominated
The Prize works through a worldwide network of Official Nominators as well as its own science-backed research. A candidate can be a solution, project, organization, city, treaty or other initiative that addresses one of the five Earthshots. The expected starting point is evidence: candidates should have a proven prototype, signs that the approach is working and credible potential for positive environmental impact.

That requirement separates the process from an idea contest. A proposal may be ambitious, but it must demonstrate more than an untested concept before it can progress.
2. The field is narrowed to the Top 150
Thousands of nominations are reviewed and reduced to a Top 150. This intermediate stage gives the Prize a way to examine a substantial global field before concentrating on the finalists. The public-facing process describes the assessment as evidence-led and connected to the relevant Earthshot challenge.

3. Fifteen finalists are selected
The Top 150 becomes 15 finalists, with the finalists representing the strongest solutions across the five Earthshots for that year. In a typical annual cycle, this means three finalists are associated with each Earthshot, although the important published figure is the total of 15 finalists.
4. The Earthshot Prize Council chooses five winners
The Earthshot Prize Council makes the final decision. It selects one winner for each of the five Earthshots, producing five annual winners in total. The council’s decision follows the nomination and expert-assessment stages rather than a public popularity vote.
5. Winners and finalists enter the support program
Each winner receives a £1 million grant intended to help the solution grow. All 15 finalists join a year-long Earthshot Fellowship. Fellows receive tailored support and access to the Global Alliance, the Prize’s network of organizations that can help unlock finance, partnerships, policy support and adoption.
6. The work continues after the ceremony
The final objective is scale. The Prize seeks to connect solutions with philanthropies, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, investors and businesses so that an award can translate into deployment, replication or stronger policy—not just recognition on one evening.

The categories are deliberately broad. They allow the Prize to recognize a technology, a community program, a city policy, a legal agreement or another model when it offers a credible route to the same environmental outcome.

Who can be nominated?
The published process is centered on solutions rather than a narrow job title or professional credential. Nominations may come through Official Nominators, and the Prize also identifies candidates through its own research. The strongest candidates have three characteristics:

- Evidence of success: there are signs that it is delivering useful environmental, social or practical results.
- Potential to scale: additional capital, partnerships, policy support or adoption could expand its impact.
Because the process is nomination-based, submitting an idea does not guarantee consideration, and the published material does not describe an open public vote as part of the final decision. Organizations considering a nomination should present measurable results, explain which Earthshot they address and show what prevents the solution from reaching a much larger scale.
How winners are assessed and chosen
The process combines broad discovery with specialist review. For the 2025 cohort, the Prize reported nearly 2,500 nominations from 72 countries. Those nominations came through a network of 575 Official Nominators. An Expert Advisory Panel of more than 100 subject-matter experts supported the assessment before the Earthshot Prize Council selected the winners.
These figures describe the 2025 cycle, not a permanent annual quota. Nominations, participating experts and partner relationships can change from year to year.

- Does the solution fit an Earthshot? The work must directly address one of the five defined environmental outcomes.
- Can it produce substantially more impact? The evidence and operating model must suggest that it can be expanded, copied or adopted with the right support.
The Council then makes the final choice among the 15 finalists. That structure means a technically impressive project can still be passed over if its environmental relevance or scaling pathway is weaker than another finalist’s.
How much money does an Earthshot winner get?
Each of the five annual winners receives a £1 million grant. The amount is described as catalytic funding: it is intended to help unlock further progress rather than represent the total cost of solving the problem or a personal cash prize for an individual.
The 15 finalists do not receive the same £1 million award, but they do enter the year-long Earthshot Fellowship. Their package includes tailored support and access to the Global Alliance, which can provide connections to potential funders, partners, policymakers and adopters.
The published information does not set out one universal spending rule for every winner. How the grant supports expansion depends on the solution, its organization and its next operational needs.

A grant can finance a defined phase of work, but environmental solutions often stall because they lack procurement relationships, policy access, distribution partners or follow-on investment. The Fellowship and Global Alliance are intended to address those barriers.

- Partnerships: connections with organizations able to deploy, manufacture, distribute or replicate the approach.
- Policy support: access to government or institutional relationships that can remove regulatory or adoption obstacles.

The ceremony has rotated among London, Boston, Singapore, Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. The official awards information lists Mumbai, India, as the scheduled host for the 2026 event.
