IET membership and professional registration are separate credentials. An IET grade—such as Associate, Technician Member (TMIET), Member (MIET) or Fellow (FIET)—shows a person’s membership category within the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Professional registration—CEng, IEng, EngTech or ICTTech—shows that an applicant has been assessed against an Engineering Council competence standard through a licensed institution. Membership does not automatically confer registration, although one person can hold both and use both sets of post-nominal letters.
The distinction in one view
The two systems answer different questions. Membership asks, “What category do you hold in the IET?” Registration asks, “Have you demonstrated the competence and professional commitment required for a UK registration category?” The IET is licensed to assess applicants for all four listed registration categories, using the relevant version of UK-SPEC or ICTTech – The Standard.

What each IET membership grade means
Membership is the IET’s internal progression of categories. It can provide access to the institution’s professional community and services, but the grade itself is not an entry on the Engineering Council register.

Student membership is intended for someone enrolled in an engineering, technology or related STEM programme, typically studying towards qualifications that may later support professional registration. Being a student member does not reserve a registration category or guarantee that a future application will succeed; the graduate must still demonstrate the required competence.

Associate
Associate membership is available to someone interested in engineering and technology without a formal engineering qualification requirement. It is therefore broader than the grades that normally reflect technician or graduate-level professional preparation. Associate members do not use a designatory post-nominal.
Technician Member (TMIET)
The IET gives technician members typical benchmarks such as a relevant foundation degree, NVQ or SVQ Level 4 or 5, HND, HNC or a comparable qualification, together with professional engagement in a technology field. These are orientation points rather than automatic admission rules. Equivalent learning and experience can be considered when the IET reviews an individual application. TMIET is the associated post-nominal.
Member (MIET)
MIET is the grade generally associated with relevant bachelor’s-level or higher qualifications, or equivalent professional knowledge and experience at graduate level. The qualification title alone is not a guarantee: the IET considers the whole application and the applicant’s professional background. MIET is the membership post-nominal.

Fellow is a senior IET membership category. The detailed criteria and application expectations should be checked in the IET’s current Fellow guidance, because a brief membership overview does not set out every requirement. FIET is the post-nominal for an elected Fellow; Honorary Fellows use Hon FIET.
Why the benchmarks are not automatic rules
The IET describes typical education and experience for its grades, then reviews applications individually. A person with a non-standard qualification may still fit a grade through relevant work, learning and professional contribution. Conversely, holding a degree or a particular job title does not by itself create entitlement to a specific grade.
What professional registration means
Professional registration is a regulated status on the Engineering Council register. The applicant must show competence and commitment against the standard for a particular category. The IET’s category guidance describes four options.

CEng — Chartered Engineer
A Chartered Engineer develops solutions to complex engineering problems. The work can involve technical analysis, creativity, innovation and the application of new or existing technologies. CEng is a competence designation, not a synonym for having a particular degree or for holding MIET.

IEng — Incorporated Engineer
An Incorporated Engineer maintains and manages applications of current and developing technology. The role may span design, development, manufacture, construction and operation. IEng focuses on demonstrated professional practice and responsibility, not simply on whether an applicant has a conventional engineering degree.
EngTech — Engineering Technician
An Engineering Technician applies proven techniques and procedures to practical engineering problems. The category recognises technicians who can work safely and effectively within their area, using established methods and exercising the required judgement.
ICTTech — ICT Technician
An ICT Technician supports functions that use information and communications technology solutions, hardware and software. ICTTech is the registration route for the relevant ICT technician responsibilities; it is distinct from both IET membership grades and the engineering registration categories.
How the assessment standard works
Registration categories follow a variation of UK-SPEC or ICTTech – The Standard. The standards look at what an applicant can do and how they practise, rather than treating a certificate or membership card as proof of competence. The category determines the level and type of evidence expected.

- knowledge and understanding;
- design, development and problem solving;
- responsibility, management or leadership;
- communication and interpersonal skills; and
- professional commitment.
Other categories use their own detailed requirements and assessment arrangements. It is therefore unsafe to treat the IEng checklist as a universal procedure for CEng, EngTech or ICTTech.
Does an IET member need a degree to register?
No single degree rule answers every application. Accredited higher-education qualifications are common routes, but the IET also describes alternative routes for experienced engineers who can demonstrate equivalent learning and competence. The decisive question is whether the applicant can produce evidence against the chosen registration standard.
A degree can make the academic requirement more straightforward, but it does not replace the professional assessment. Conversely, lacking an accredited degree does not automatically end an IEng application when experience and other learning establish the required level. The IET’s assessors consider the individual record, so applicants should map their education, projects, responsibilities and continuing development to the category guidance before applying.

What the IEng application involves
The IET’s IEng instructions illustrate the kind of evidence a registration application can require. They should not be presented as identical for every category.
- Select IEng as the intended category. Review the current competence and commitment requirements and identify evidence from your work, education and professional development.
- Prepare documentary evidence. The IET asks IEng applicants for evidence of competence and commitment and for higher-education certificates where applicable.
- Arrange a supporter. An application includes a supporter who can provide an informed professional statement about the applicant’s experience and competence.
- Submit the application through the IET’s process. Career Manager can help organise evidence and track the material used to support the application.
- Attend the Professional Review Interview. Professional assessors examine the application and discuss how the applicant has applied knowledge, taken responsibility, communicated and maintained professional standards.
- Respond to the outcome. If further evidence or development is needed, use the assessors’ feedback to close the identified gaps before making another submission or proceeding under the IET’s instructions.
The exact forms, supporting requirements and review arrangements can change. Applicants should use the current category-specific IET guidance rather than assuming that an IEng step list applies unchanged to CEng, EngTech or ICTTech.
How the two sets of letters are used
A registered engineer may also be an IET member, so both credentials can appear after the name. The IET’s designatory-letter guidance places Engineering Council letters after decorations or degrees and before IET membership letters.

For example, the IET gives forms such as A B Smith OBE MEng CEng FIET and A B Smith OBE EngTech TMIET. In the first, CEng is the registration status and FIET is the IET membership grade. In the second, EngTech is registration and TMIET is membership. The order is meaningful: it prevents readers from mistaking an institution grade for a registration category.
Student and Associate members do not add membership letters. A person who is registered but not an IET member can use the relevant registration letters, subject to the Engineering Council’s rules; membership letters cannot be used without the corresponding IET grade.
Membership first, registration first, or both?
When membership is the immediate goal
Choose the IET grade that best reflects your present education, experience and relationship with engineering or technology. Student and Associate routes are suitable for early engagement or a general professional interest; TMIET and MIET reflect more established technician- or graduate-level profiles; FIET is for senior membership. The IET can advise on the grade when the evidence does not fit a simple benchmark.
When registration is the immediate goal
Start with the registration category that matches the work you actually perform and the level of responsibility you can demonstrate. Do not choose CEng merely because you hold a master’s degree, or IEng merely because you hold MIET. The standard is based on competence, responsibility and commitment in practice.
When both are useful
Many professionals maintain IET membership while pursuing or holding registration. Membership can provide the institution relationship used for the application, while registration records the independently assessed professional status. The two credentials complement each other but remain administratively and legally distinct.

The Engineering Council does not offer direct registration to individuals. A candidate applies through a licensed institution or, where the relevant agreement permits, a Professional Affiliate. Someone already registered through another institution may be able to transfer registration to the IET when more than 12 months have passed since registration, subject to the IET’s transfer process and current conditions.

Transfer is not the same as gaining a new membership grade. It concerns the registration relationship and must follow the IET’s live transfer instructions. Confirm the current eligibility window, documents and any institutional requirements before submitting a request.
Maintaining registration after approval
Registration is an ongoing professional status rather than a one-time substitution for membership. The IET’s IEng guidance says maintaining that status requires continued IET membership and regular continuing professional development (CPD). CPD records should show how learning, reflection and professional activity keep competence current.
Maintenance requirements can differ by category and can be updated. Keep membership, CPD and contact details current, and check the IET’s latest instructions if your circumstances change or if you move between institutions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling MIET “chartered.” MIET identifies IET membership; CEng identifies Chartered Engineer registration.
- Assuming membership automatically registers you. Every registration application still requires assessment against the relevant standard.
- Treating a degree as the whole application. Academic qualifications are only one part of the evidence; competence, responsibility, communication and commitment also matter.
- Using the wrong post-nominal order. Put registration letters after degrees or decorations and before IET membership letters.
- Applying the IEng process to every category. CEng, EngTech and ICTTech have category-specific requirements and evidence.
- Relying on an old checklist. Forms, transfer conditions, maintenance rules and fees can change, so use the current IET guidance when you apply.
Practical examples
A student planning a professional career
A university student can join the IET as a Student member while building academic and project experience. That membership does not make the student an IEng or CEng registrant. After gaining the required education and professional evidence, the person applies for the chosen registration category through the assessment route.
An experienced technician without a conventional degree
An experienced technician may fit TMIET and may also be able to pursue EngTech or IEng, depending on the responsibilities and competence demonstrated. The absence of an accredited degree is not, by itself, a refusal reason; the applicant must show the required equivalent learning and practical competence.
A graduate engineer with MIET
A graduate engineer can hold MIET and still need to apply for CEng or IEng. The membership grade may reflect the person’s education and professional level, but registration requires a separate competence assessment and, where applicable, an interview.
A registered engineer seeking IET membership
Someone already registered through another licensed institution can join the IET at an appropriate membership grade. Registration and membership continue as separate credentials; any transfer of the registration itself follows the IET’s specific transfer rules.

The bottom line
IET grades describe membership of the institution. CEng, IEng, EngTech and ICTTech describe professional registration on the Engineering Council register. You may hold both, but neither substitutes for the other. Select membership based on the IET grade that fits your current profile, select registration based on the competence category you can evidence, and complete the relevant assessment before using registration letters.
