A market correction is a commonly used description for a decline of at least 10% from a recent high. A crash is a sudden, drastic fall whose defining features are speed and severity, not a universally accepted percentage. A bear market is different again: Investor.gov generally uses that term when a broad market index falls 20% or more over at least two months.

The short answer: percentage versus speed

“Correction” and “crash” are descriptive market language, not two steps on a legally defined scale. The conventional correction benchmark is a drop of at least 10% from a recent peak. FINRA applies that wording to stocks, bonds, commodities and indexes, while Fidelity describes the stock-market convention as a fall of at least 10% from recent highs and notes that no official definition exists.

“Crash” emphasizes what the decline feels like and how it unfolds: a sudden, drastic move that is usually faster and more severe than an ordinary correction. The sources used here establish no universal percentage at which a crash begins. A 15% fall over a few weeks might be called a correction, while a much faster plunge could be described as a crash even if the final close-to-close loss looks less dramatic.

A third term, “bear market,” supplies a more specific magnitude-and-duration convention. Investor.gov says a broad market index generally enters bear-market territory after falling 20% or more over at least a two-month period. A crash can contribute to a bear market, but neither term automatically implies the other.

How the terms compare

Term What it usually means Main measurement Important qualification
Correction A decline of at least 10% from a recent high Peak-to-trough percentage A widely used convention, not an official market rule; sources differ on exact wording and the asset being measured.
Crash A sudden, drastic market decline Speed and severity No universal numerical cutoff has been established.
Bear market A broad index decline of 20% or more over at least two months Magnitude plus duration Investor.gov presents this as a general convention, not a definition of a crash.
Circuit breaker A formal, temporary trading halt Intraday index move and market procedure A regulatory safeguard; it does not decide whether commentators call a move a correction or crash.

What counts as a market correction?

The 10% convention

To calculate a conventional correction, identify a meaningful recent high and measure the subsequent low. A fall from 5,000 to 4,500 is a 10% decline, so commentators would commonly describe it as a correction. The same convention can be applied to an individual security, an index or, in FINRA’s glossary wording, other asset classes such as bonds and commodities.

The phrase “at least 10%” should be treated as shorthand rather than a switch that changes the market’s status at one precise tick. Different publications may use “10% or more,” “at least 10%,” or a slightly different reference high. Always check whether the number refers to an index, a particular stock, a closing value or an intraday low.

Why corrections happen

Fidelity lists several factors that may contribute: political or global news, economic data such as employment and inflation reports, shifts in investor sentiment, and company earnings. These are possible catalysts, not a universal checklist. A correction can reflect investors repricing expected profits, interest rates, risk or economic growth, and more than one factor may operate at once.

What the label does not tell you

Calling a decline a correction does not predict its endpoint. It may stop near 10%, recover, deepen into a bear market, or become a faster and more disorderly event. Timing is unpredictable, and historical recovery patterns do not guarantee what will happen next. The label describes the move already observed; it is not a forecast or a personal investment recommendation.

What makes a market move a crash?

Suddenness and severity

Fidelity describes a crash as a sudden, drastic drop and says crashes have historically been faster and more severe than corrections. That language directs attention to the path of prices: how quickly liquidity disappears, how broadly prices fall, and whether trading becomes disorderly. There is no authoritative rule saying a crash starts at 20%, 30% or any other fixed loss.

Because “crash” has no standardized threshold, two credible reports can use different labels for the same episode. One may focus on the percentage from the previous close; another may emphasize an intraday plunge, the number of securities affected or the speed of the rebound. Treat the word as a description of market behavior, not as a formal classification.

Peak-to-trough and close-to-close are different

A peak-to-trough loss compares a recent high with the later low. A close-to-close loss compares one session’s closing value with the previous session’s close. A market can suffer a dramatic intraday collapse and rebound before the closing bell, leaving a much smaller close-to-close decline. Conversely, a series of ordinary-looking daily losses can accumulate into a large peak-to-trough fall without one spectacular session.

When reading a headline, identify which measure is being quoted. “The index fell 12%” is incomplete unless the article states the reference high, the low or close used, and the time period.

Crash versus bear market

A bear market is primarily a sustained-decline description. Investor.gov’s general convention is a fall of 20% or more in a broad market index over at least two months. Duration matters: a sharp one-day drop that quickly reverses may be called a crash but does not, by itself, satisfy that bear-market convention.

The reverse is also possible. An index can drift down 20% over several months with no single panic session. That may qualify as a bear market while commentators avoid the word “crash.” A crash can occur at the beginning of a bear market, during one, or without leading to a prolonged 20%-plus decline.

Neither label establishes a cause, predicts a recession or tells an investor when prices will recover. They describe market performance over different dimensions: suddenness and severity for a crash, and magnitude plus elapsed time for a bear market.

Corrections, crashes and circuit breakers are not the same thing

FINRA describes market-wide circuit breakers as formal trading pauses triggered by specified same-day declines in the S&P 500. Their purpose is to give markets and participants time to absorb information and restore orderly trading. A halt is therefore a procedure with regulatory triggers.

Whether a move is called a correction or crash is a separate vocabulary question. A market can decline enough to meet a correction convention without triggering a halt, and a brief, violent intraday move can activate a safeguard even if the closing loss is relatively modest. Do not use the existence or absence of a circuit breaker as proof that an event was or was not a crash.

The May 6, 2010 Flash Crash illustrates the distinction

In its report on the events of May 6, 2010, staff of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission described sharp declines and rebounds in many securities during the session. Major futures and equity indexes finished the day about 3% below the prior close, despite the much more dramatic intraday swings.

This episode is useful because it separates speed from the final daily percentage. Looking only at the close would miss the suddenness, temporary loss of liquidity and rapid reversals that made the event “flash” in character. It also shows why a crash description need not correspond to a single, permanent peak-to-trough percentage.

How to interpret a market headline accurately

  1. Identify the asset. Determine whether the statement concerns a broad index, a sector index, an individual company, a futures contract or another market.
  2. Find the reference point. Check whether the decline is measured from a recent high, the previous close, an opening level or a calendar-period starting point.
  3. Check the time span. A one-minute plunge, one trading day, several weeks and two months describe different phenomena.
  4. Separate intraday and closing data. Record both the low and the close when an episode includes a sharp rebound.
  5. Look for the label’s basis. “Correction” generally signals the 10% convention; “crash” signals abruptness and severity; “bear market” invokes the 20%-over-two-month general convention.
  6. Read the source’s qualification. Reputable outlets should identify whether a threshold is a convention, an official rule or simply descriptive language.

Worked examples

Example 1: a conventional correction

An index reaches 4,000, then declines steadily to 3,550 over several weeks. The peak-to-trough loss is 11.25%, so “correction” is a conventional description. Nothing in that calculation establishes that the move is a crash or a bear market.

Example 2: a sudden crash-like session

An index opens near 4,000, plunges to 3,400 during the day and closes at 3,880. The intraday low is 15% below the reference high, but the close is only 3% below the previous close. The speed and reversal could lead observers to call the session crash-like, while the closing figure alone would tell only part of the story.

Example 3: a bear market without a crash

An index loses 2% to 3% repeatedly over four months and eventually stands 21% below its prior high. The sustained 20%-plus decline over more than two months fits Investor.gov’s general bear-market convention, even though no single day was exceptionally abrupt.

Common misconceptions

  • “Every 10% decline is officially a correction.” The 10% figure is a common convention, not a formal universal rule.
  • “A crash begins at a fixed percentage.” The reviewed definitions provide no universal numeric crash threshold.
  • “A crash and a bear market are synonyms.” A crash emphasizes suddenness and severity; a bear market emphasizes magnitude and duration.
  • “A circuit breaker proves the market crashed.” A circuit breaker is a regulatory halt triggered by specified intraday conditions, not a vocabulary definition.
  • “A correction must become a crash.” It may reverse, continue gradually or become more severe; the future path is not determined by the initial label.
  • “A crash guarantees a recession or a known recovery date.” Market terminology alone cannot establish either outcome.

A practical checklist for investors and readers

Before reacting to a dramatic market story, write down the index or security, the prior reference high, the intraday low, the latest close and the elapsed time. Then classify each dimension separately: percentage from the peak, one-day change, speed of the move and whether the decline has lasted at least two months. This prevents a one-day headline from being mistaken for a long-term trend.

Use the labels to understand reporting, not to make an individualized trading decision. A correction can create uncertainty without being a crash; a crash can reverse before becoming a bear market; and a bear market can develop without a single spectacular plunge.

Bottom line

Use “market correction” for the widely recognized, roughly 10%-from-a-recent-high convention, while remembering that it is not an official rule. Use “crash” for a sudden, drastic and typically more severe decline, without assigning it a made-up percentage cutoff. Reserve “bear market” for the separate magnitude-and-duration convention of a broad index falling 20% or more over at least two months. Always state the asset, reference point and time period so readers know whether a number describes an intraday shock, a closing loss or a peak-to-trough trend.
