In Windows, the Device Association Framework (DAF) is functionality for discovering and associating network-connected devices so they can be installed and used much like devices connected through a hardware bus. Microsoft’s explanation of that architecture is older documentation, however, and it warns that its Function Discovery material may have changed or become unavailable in later Windows versions. DAF is not a consumer app or a product to install.

What the Device Association Framework does

Microsoft’s historical PnP-X documentation describes Plug and Play Extensions as a way to discover networked devices and install them on a Windows system using Plug and Play. In that documented model, framework components help Windows discover a network-connected device, associate it with the computer, and make it available for use.

The page describes discovery providers such as SSDP and WS-Discovery, an association interface, and an IP bus enumerator. It also explains that PnP-X stores function instances in an association database: when a device is online and has an associated database entry, it can have a present Plug and Play devnode. These details explain the documented architecture; they are not a complete specification of current Windows internals.

How the documented discovery process worked

The PnP-X page outlines a historical example in which Windows discovers a network device, the user selects it in Network Explorer, and the IP Bus Enumeration Service creates a device object. Plug and Play then installs the device using a matching driver package, after which Windows initializes it.

DAF, Device Association Service, and dasHost.exe are related terms

Microsoft uses DAF to mean Device Association Framework and DAS to mean Device Association Service in its Wi-Fi Direct printing documentation. That page is about printing: it says Windows 8.1 and later support Wi-Fi Direct printing under requirements that include Wi-Fi Direct vertical pairing, matching Container IDs for logical devices in a physical device, and WSD/WS-Print. Those printing-specific details should not be assumed to describe every use of DAF.

The process name dasHost.exe refers to Device Association Framework Provider Host. An anonymous accepted answer on Microsoft Q&A describes the host as enabling pairing between the system and wired or wireless devices. That community answer is useful context, not a formal product specification. The available documentation does not establish that DAF, DAS, and the provider host are interchangeable names or spell out every current implementation detail.

A Microsoft-maintained Universal Print provisioning script also references a per-system DeviceAssociationService state store and a per-user Device Association Framework store. This is an example from printing administration, not a reason for ordinary users to edit registry data.

What to do if dasHost.exe is using a lot of CPU

Community Q&A threads contain reports of unusually high resource use by the provider host or Device Association Service. Those are individual reports, not evidence that high CPU has one common cause. A 2018 answer suggested that high resource use may point to a problem with an associated device and recommended checking for driver updates; it does not establish a universal diagnosis.

  1. Note what coincides with the spike. Record when it happens and whether a particular device is being connected, paired, or used. This gives you a practical clue to investigate without assuming the process is at fault.
  2. Check for supported driver updates. Use Windows Update or the device maker’s supported driver channel. The community troubleshooting advice specifically points to checking driver updates, but an update is not guaranteed to resolve every case.
  3. Avoid disabling the service as a default fix. Device association and pairing may be affected. If the issue continues, seek help through trusted technical support rather than making broad service changes.

For context, see the Microsoft Q&A thread about Device Association Service CPU use and the thread about Device Association Framework CPU use. Their reports are anecdotal and should not be read as typical CPU measurements.

How to assess whether a dasHost.exe file is genuine

A familiar process name or startup label is not proof that the underlying file is legitimate. Microsoft Security Intelligence documents Backdoor:MSIL/Medirot.A, malware that created a file resembling %TEMP%dashost.exe and used “Device Association Framework” as a startup value name pointing to that temporary file. The threat description says the malware can enable backdoor control.

This does not mean every file named dasHost.exe is malicious. It means the name alone cannot establish that a file is the genuine Windows component. If you suspect impersonation or infection, use Windows Security or contact trusted technical support rather than trusting the displayed process name.
