Cygnus is Northrop Grumman’s uncrewed, expendable cargo spacecraft for NASA Commercial Resupply Services missions to the International Space Station (ISS). A launch vehicle sends it to orbit; after rendezvous, astronauts use the station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm to capture and berth it at the Unity module, where its pressurized cargo is unloaded before the vehicle leaves with waste and burns up in the atmosphere.
What Cygnus is—and what it is not
Cygnus is the spacecraft portion of a commercial transportation system serving NASA’s ISS logistics needs. Northrop Grumman operates the vehicle under NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) program. It carries research hardware, experiment samples, maintenance equipment, crew provisions and other pressurized cargo to the station. NASA’s commercial-resupply overview describes Cygnus as a solar-powered cargo spacecraft.
It is not the rocket that lifts off from Earth. A separate launch vehicle places Cygnus into orbit; the rocket provider can change from one mission to another. For example, the CRS-24 vehicle launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9, while that choice should not be treated as a rule for every Cygnus flight. Once in orbit, Cygnus performs the approach and station operations as its own spacecraft.

Cygnus and Cygnus XL
NASA uses the name Cygnus for the spacecraft family and calls the newer Cygnus XL a larger, more cargo-capable version of the company’s solar-powered vehicle. The designation identifies increased cargo capability, not a different resupply method: both versions are launched separately from the station, approach it, and are captured by Canadarm2 for berthing.
Public mission reports do not provide a single, like-for-like maximum-capacity table covering every Cygnus version. A load reported for one flight is the cargo actually assigned to that mission, not automatically the spacecraft’s design limit. The most recent example in the cited material is CRS-24, whose Cygnus XL carried approximately 11,000 pounds of cargo.
How a Cygnus resupply mission works
1. Cargo is packed and the spacecraft is integrated
NASA and Northrop Grumman assemble a mission-specific manifest. The pressurized module can contain science investigations, station replacement parts, crew supplies, food, packaging and other equipment. Because each flight supports a different combination of research and maintenance needs, the contents and total mass vary.
The spacecraft is then mounted on its assigned launch vehicle. In CRS-24, NASA reported that Cygnus XL launched from Cape Canaveral on April 11, 2026, aboard a Falcon 9 with approximately 11,000 pounds of cargo. That figure describes the CRS-24 shipment and should not be quoted as a universal Cygnus capacity. NASA’s launch release gives the mission-specific details at its CRS-24 launch report.

2. The launch vehicle places Cygnus in orbit
The rocket’s job ends after it releases the spacecraft on the trajectory planned for the mission. Cygnus then uses its own systems to continue the flight toward the ISS. Keeping these roles separate prevents a common misunderstanding: “the Cygnus launch” refers to a rocket carrying Cygnus, while “Cygnus” itself is the cargo carrier that performs the station rendezvous.
3. Cygnus approaches the ISS
After orbital operations, Cygnus conducts a rendezvous with the station. NASA’s mission descriptions state that the vehicle approaches the ISS before capture. The supplied mission accounts do not establish a universal approach distance, timing rule or navigation sequence, so those details should not be assumed to be identical on every flight.
4. Canadarm2 captures the spacecraft
Cygnus does not arrive as a crewed spacecraft and does not simply fly into an open station docking port. Astronauts inside the ISS command the Canadarm2 robotic arm to grapple the approaching vehicle. NASA’s CRS-24 overview explains that, after arrival, the crew uses Canadarm2 to capture Cygnus XL. This is an arm-assisted capture operation.

Once the arm has grappled the spacecraft, operators move it into position and install it on the Earth-facing port of the station’s Unity module. NASA calls this installation “robotically installing” the spacecraft for cargo unloading. The distinction between capture-and-berthing and direct docking matters: the crew manages the arm and the final placement, rather than Cygnus completing a conventional autonomous docking approach.

NASA’s wording for the CRS-24 operation is: “Following arrival, astronauts aboard the space station will use the Canadarm2 to grapple Cygnus XL before robotically installing the spacecraft to the Unity module’s Earth-facing port for cargo unloading.” The complete mission overview is available at NASA’s CRS-24 overview.
6. The crew unloads and uses the cargo
With the spacecraft secured, astronauts open the pressurized cargo area and transfer items into the ISS. Research packages may be installed in station facilities; consumables and crew provisions enter normal inventory; replacement hardware is staged for maintenance. The transfer is not a single standardized checklist because the manifest, experiment schedule and station priorities differ by mission.
NASA’s CRS-24 mission page and related releases identify science and supplies as part of the mission’s purpose. They do not imply that every Cygnus carries the same experiments or equipment.
What happens after unloading?
Waste loading and departure
When the station no longer needs the spacecraft attached, the crew fills its interior with trash, packaging and hardware that are not scheduled to return on another vehicle. NASA describes Cygnus as a way to dispose of several thousand pounds of waste after departure. This gives the ISS a controlled disposal path instead of requiring the crew to store all discarded material indefinitely.

Research that is unsuitable for the station
A departing Cygnus can also carry experiments that would be hazardous or impractical to conduct inside the ISS. NASA’s station logistics material notes that vehicles leaving the station can host research investigations that would pose hazards aboard the orbiting laboratory. The spacecraft therefore serves both as a delivery truck and as a temporary platform for selected post-departure work.
Destructive atmospheric reentry
Cygnus is not a reusable cargo-return capsule. After release, it performs the planned departure and reenters Earth’s atmosphere, where it burns up. Waste loaded by the crew is destroyed with the vehicle, so intact return of ordinary ISS cargo is not part of the Cygnus mission design.
Cygnus can help raise the ISS orbit
Beyond transport and disposal, NASA describes Cygnus as having an orbital-reboost capability. A reboost firing slightly changes the station’s orbit to counter atmospheric drag and maintain the altitude needed for operations. The exact result depends on the maneuver and the station’s orbital state; it is not a fixed amount delivered by every mission.
On September 25, 2026, NASA reported that the CRS-24 Cygnus XL completed a reboost. Its thrusters fired for 18 minutes. NASA reported an increase of 1.5 miles at apogee and 0.8 miles at perigee. Those numbers describe that specific event, not a standard Cygnus performance guarantee. The agency’s report is at NASA’s Cygnus XL reboost update.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the capture-and-berthing method matters
The arm-assisted method gives the ISS crew control over the final placement of a large, uncrewed vehicle. Canadarm2 can grapple Cygnus and guide it to the Unity port while ground controllers and astronauts coordinate the operation. Berthing also uses one of the station’s standardized ports for visiting cargo vehicles, allowing the pressurized module to connect to the station’s interior after the arm has positioned it.
Calling the event a “docking” without qualification can mislead readers into picturing a crewed capsule autonomously flying into a docking adapter. For Cygnus, the operational sequence is approach, robotic capture, robotic positioning and berthing, followed by crew unloading.

- NASA: customer and mission authority for the cited Commercial Resupply Services activity; it sets station needs, coordinates operations and publishes mission updates.
- Northrop Grumman: operator of Cygnus and NASA’s CRS contractor for the missions described here.
- Launch provider: supplies the rocket for an individual mission. CRS-24 used a Falcon 9, but the launch vehicle can vary by mission and date.
- ISS crew and Canadarm2 operators: command the capture and move the spacecraft to Unity’s Earth-facing port, then unload its pressurized cargo.
NASA’s broader explanation of how commercial partners support station science is available in its commercial-partners overview. The CRS-20 overview also illustrates the recurring logistics role of Cygnus missions.
Common misconceptions about Cygnus
- “Cygnus is the rocket.” No. Cygnus is the cargo spacecraft; a separate launch vehicle carries it to orbit.
- “Every Cygnus carries 11,000 pounds.” No. Approximately 11,000 pounds is the cargo figure NASA reported for CRS-24, not a universal capacity specification.
- “Cygnus docks like a crew capsule.” The ISS crew uses Canadarm2 to capture and berth it at Unity’s Earth-facing port.
- “Cygnus brings cargo back to Earth.” It leaves with waste and is destroyed during atmospheric reentry; it is not a reusable return vehicle.
- “The same rocket launches every mission.” Launch providers can differ. CRS-24 used Falcon 9, but that fact does not establish a permanent launcher assignment.
- “The CRS-24 reboost numbers apply to every flight.” The 18-minute firing and reported altitude changes belong to that particular September 2026 maneuver.
Why Cygnus matters to ISS operations
The ISS depends on a continuing flow of consumables, experiment materials and replacement equipment. Cygnus combines delivery, temporary attached storage, waste removal and—when planned—orbital support in one uncrewed mission. Its expendable design is suited to carrying waste away after the crew has removed useful cargo, while the arm-assisted berthing process lets astronauts integrate the vehicle with the station’s existing robotic and pressurized systems.
In practical terms, a Cygnus flight is a logistics cycle rather than a single delivery event: a mission-specific load is launched, rendezvous is completed, the vehicle is captured and berthed, supplies and research are transferred, waste is loaded, optional station-support work such as reboost is performed, and the spacecraft finally reenters destructively. That cycle explains both what Cygnus contributes to the ISS and why its role is different from that of a crew transport or a reusable cargo-return capsule.
