The core–mantle boundary (CMB) is the interface about 2,900 kilometers beneath Earth’s surface where the solid silicate mantle meets the liquid, iron-rich outer core. It is one of the planet’s strongest thermal and chemical boundaries. Heat leaving the core, dense material stored in the lowermost mantle, and mineral phase changes can destabilize the mantle above the boundary. Those instabilities may rise as mantle plumes, supplying heat and deep-mantle material to volcanic hotspots and, in some cases, large igneous provinces. Scientists find evidence that some plumes originate near the CMB, but no seismic image or geochemical signature proves that every plume has a single, common source depth.

The core–mantle boundary in Earth’s interior

Earth is layered by composition and physical state. The mantle is mostly solid silicate rock, although over geological time it can flow slowly. Beneath it lies the outer core, a liquid metal layer dominated by iron and containing lighter elements. The CMB separates these materials and marks an abrupt change in density, temperature, seismic properties and ability to flow.

The boundary is almost 2,900 km below the surface, according to a 2008 review in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A. A 2023 U.S. Geological Survey record gives approximately 2,800 km as the depth near which mantle plumes originate. The small difference reflects rounded values and the fact that a plume source is described as a region near the boundary rather than a surveyed point.

Pressure at the CMB is more than a million times atmospheric pressure, and temperatures are several thousand degrees Celsius. Exact values vary with the thermal model used, so the important geological contrast is the direction of heat flow: the core is generally hotter than the overlying mantle, and heat crosses the boundary into the mantle.

What is the D″ layer?

The lowermost mantle immediately above the CMB is commonly called the D″ (D-double-prime) region. It is not a separate global shell with a perfectly uniform thickness. Instead, it is a seismically distinctive part of the mantle whose thickness and properties vary geographically.

D″ contains strong lateral variations in seismic-wave speed. In many areas, seismic observations identify a sharp discontinuity associated with the post-perovskite phase of a magnesium- and iron-bearing silicate mineral. The depth and strength of that phase boundary depend on temperature and composition, so D″ can record both the mantle’s thermal structure and its chemical history.

Other D″ features include ultra-low-velocity zones, where seismic waves travel exceptionally slowly, and broad regions of anomalous velocity. These observations may indicate unusually hot rock, unusual composition, partial melting, or combinations of those causes. A seismic anomaly is therefore evidence of a physical contrast, not a unique label that automatically means “plume root.”

Why the CMB can generate mantle plumes

A plume is a buoyant upwelling of mantle material. It is not necessarily a narrow, rigid pipe: numerical models and seismic observations allow for broad heads, thinner conduits, tilted columns and structures disrupted by convection. Whether an upwelling becomes a long-lived plume depends on buoyancy, viscosity, surrounding flow and the tectonic setting through which it rises.

Thermal boundary-layer instability

Heat entering the mantle from the core can warm the rock at the base of the mantle. A hot layer becomes less dense than cooler material above it. If the density contrast and heating are sufficient to overcome the resistance of the surrounding mantle, the layer can become unstable. Hot material then rises, while cooler material sinks toward the boundary elsewhere.

This is the classic thermal plume mechanism. It explains why the CMB is a plausible source region: a thermal boundary layer naturally develops where a very hot fluid or solid that can creep slowly is overlain by cooler material. The process is governed by convection equations, not by an open cavity or a crack extending through the mantle.

Compositional buoyancy and dense piles

Temperature is only one source of buoyancy. The lowermost mantle also contains chemically distinct material delivered by subduction, created by core–mantle reactions or concentrated by long-term convective sorting. Some of these materials are denser than normal mantle and can collect into large piles; others may be buoyant when heated or chemically altered.

Dense piles can redirect rising flow, anchor plume-generation zones at their margins or feed a plume with a distinctive chemical signature. A plume can therefore be thermochemical rather than purely thermal. The resulting upwelling may be wider, more intermittent or more compositionally variable than a simple hot column.

Mineral phase changes

At CMB pressures, mantle minerals transform into high-pressure structures. A phase transition can alter density, thermal expansivity and the way heat moves through the rock. The post-perovskite transition associated with D″ can either enhance or oppose buoyancy depending on temperature and composition. It can also focus deformation and change how a thermal boundary layer breaks into rising structures.

Do mantle plumes come from the CMB?

Some evidence is consistent with plume roots near the CMB, but the statement is probabilistic rather than universal. The USGS record for Weis and colleagues (2023) says, “Mantle plumes originate at depths near the core−mantle boundary (~2,800 km).” That wording captures the prevailing deep-source interpretation while leaving room for variation among plumes and uncertainty in resolving the lowest mantle.

One influential model places plume-generation zones near the edges of two huge low-shear-velocity provinces (LLSVPs) in the lowermost mantle. In seismic tomography, LLSVPs are broad regions where shear waves travel more slowly than in surrounding mantle. Their edges may concentrate thermal and chemical contrasts, making them favorable locations for instabilities. Geodynamic calculations and some seismic interpretations support this relationship, but it is not a settled one-to-one rule linking every hotspot to an LLSVP boundary.

Shallower upwellings are also possible. A seismic column that appears to rise from the deep mantle may be blurred by limited resolution, and a chemically distinct structure can mimic a thermal anomaly. Conversely, a plume that begins above the CMB may not leave a resolvable narrow root at the bottom of a global model. The defensible conclusion is that the CMB is a major candidate source region for some long-lived plumes, not that all hotspots are proven CMB-fed.

How a deep plume can affect the surface

Heat transport and hotspot volcanism

As buoyant mantle rises, pressure decreases. If the upwelling crosses the solidus, it undergoes decompression melting and produces magma. Where the upwelling remains relatively stationary while a tectonic plate moves above it, a chain of volcanic edifices can form. Such hotspot tracks are compatible with a deep, persistent source, but a track alone does not establish a CMB origin because lithospheric faults, edge-driven convection and other shallow processes can also localize volcanism.

Large igneous provinces

A very large plume head can spread beneath a continent or ocean basin and generate an episode of exceptionally high melt production. The resulting flood-basalt province may cover a vast area in a geologically short interval. This outcome depends on plume temperature, volume, composition, lithospheric thickness and the tectonic setting. Not every plume produces a large igneous province, and the absence of one does not rule out deep upwelling.

Geochemical fingerprints

Plume-derived ocean-island basalts can carry isotope ratios that differ from typical mid-ocean-ridge basalts. Radiogenic and stable isotopes are used to test for primitive mantle reservoirs, recycled oceanic crust, continental material and possible core–mantle interactions. These signatures provide an independent constraint on source composition and mantle evolution, but isotope mixtures can be produced by several processes. A distinctive composition supports a deep, heterogeneous reservoir; it does not by itself specify an exact depth.

How scientists locate possible plume roots

No instrument can drill to the CMB. Scientists combine observations that respond to different properties and then test whether a common Earth model explains them.

Global seismic tomography

Earthquakes generate P waves, which travel through solids and liquids, and S waves, which do not travel through liquids. Seismometers distributed around the world record travel times and waveforms. Tomographic inversions convert differences from a reference Earth model into three-dimensional maps of seismic velocity.

Computational advances have made it possible to image finer plume-like structures ascending from the CMB region. Ritsema and Lekić (2020) describe tomographic images as the most important geophysical constraints on mantle circulation and evolution. However, tomography averages information along long ray paths and depends on earthquake and station geometry. Heterogeneity is resolved at roughly 100- to 1,000-km scales, so a narrow conduit can be broadened, displaced or missed.

Waveform modeling and array methods

Travel time alone discards much of a seismogram. Network waveform modeling, waveform stacking and array processing compare the full shape and amplitude of arrivals. Three-dimensional migrations of P- and S-wave data can sharpen the location of reflectors, low-velocity zones and discontinuities in D″.

These methods can constrain heat flow across the CMB, the configuration of upwellings and downwellings, phase equilibria and transport properties. Their limits include attenuation, inaccurate source descriptions, uneven station coverage and trade-offs between temperature, composition and geometry.

Normal modes and complementary seismic observations

Large earthquakes make the whole planet resonate. Normal-mode frequencies and splitting measurements provide broad constraints on deep structure that complement regional waveform studies. They are especially useful for testing whether a proposed global pattern is compatible with the planet’s overall elastic structure, although they generally provide less direct detail about a single plume conduit.

Geodynamic modeling

Computer simulations solve equations for mantle flow, heat transport and, in some models, chemical composition. Researchers vary plume temperature, viscosity, density contrasts, CMB heat flow and plate motion, then compare predicted shapes and surface expressions with observations. A model is persuasive when it reproduces several independent constraints without relying on an implausible parameter combination.

Geochemical isotope analysis

Laboratory measurements of radiogenic and stable isotopes in volcanic rocks test whether melts sampled a long-isolated reservoir, recycled crust or material that interacted with the core–mantle system. Isotopes can preserve information that seismic waves cannot, making them a crucial independent line of evidence. The interpretation still requires mixing models because ascending plumes entrain surrounding mantle and may melt through chemically diverse lithosphere.

Competing plume explanations

The following framework helps distinguish hypotheses without treating any one observation as decisive.

Model feature CMB/D″ source Shallower mantle source Why the distinction matters
Source depth Near 2,800–2,900 km, in or immediately above the CMB Upper or middle mantle, with no required CMB connection Depth controls available heat, residence time and the interpretation of seismic roots
Buoyancy Thermal, compositional or mixed boundary-layer instability Local thermal anomalies, recycled slabs or lithosphere-driven flow Different buoyancy sources predict different shapes and chemical signatures
Seismic signature Possible low-velocity column connected to D″ or an LLSVP margin Broad or discontinuous anomaly that begins above the lowermost mantle Resolution and ray-path limitations can make the two patterns look similar
Geochemistry Primitive or recycled reservoirs, potentially including core–mantle interaction More readily explained by upper-mantle mixing and recycled lithosphere Isotopes constrain composition but do not provide a unique depth measurement
Surface outcome Long-lived hotspot, flood-basalt province, uplift or limited expression Localized volcanism, uplift or weak surface signal Plume flux, temperature, composition and tectonic setting determine the outcome

What the evidence can and cannot establish

  • Well established: the CMB is a major thermal and compositional boundary nearly 2,900 km deep, and D″ above it has distinctive seismic structure.
  • Strongly plausible: heating and chemical heterogeneity near the CMB can create buoyant instabilities that rise through the mantle.
  • Supported for some cases: seismic tomography and geochemistry are consistent with plume sources near the CMB, including structures near LLSVP margins.
  • Not demonstrated: a universal CMB origin for every hotspot, a single plume geometry or a consensus count of CMB-rooted plumes.
  • Still difficult: separating thermal, compositional and phase-change effects in the lower mantle, especially where earthquake–station coverage is poor.

Nataf’s review emphasized that direct evidence for actual plumes was historically weak. Newer tomography improves constraints but does not remove non-uniqueness: multiple combinations of temperature, composition and flow can produce similar seismic anomalies. For that reason, scientists look for agreement among tomography, waveform studies, geodynamics and isotope data rather than relying on one striking image.

Why the CMB matters beyond plume debates

The CMB couples the mantle and core. Heat crossing it helps drive mantle convection, while mantle flow influences the thermal evolution of the core and the conditions under which the geodynamo operates. Chemical exchange or reactions at the interface may also affect the composition of both layers, although the extent and significance of such exchange remain active research questions.

At the surface, deep upwellings provide one possible connection between the planet’s interior and hotspot volcanism, flood basalts, uplift and long-lived isotope reservoirs. Studying the CMB therefore links seismology, mineral physics, geochemistry, numerical modeling and plate tectonics. The most accurate picture is not a single plume template but a spectrum of upwellings whose depth, buoyancy, composition, persistence and surface effects vary.
