The Coolify CLI is a terminal client for Coolify’s REST API. It lets you inspect resources, manage servers, and start deployments from a laptop, administration host, or CI runner, while Coolify itself continues running on your VPS or other server. It works with both Coolify Cloud and self-hosted Coolify.
This guide explains the architecture, VPS requirements, installation, token authentication, named contexts, inventory commands, server registration, application deployments, scripting precautions, and the most common setup failures.
What the Coolify CLI does
Coolify’s documentation describes the CLI as a way to inspect and manage Coolify resources from a terminal. In practical terms, it is an API client: each command sends an authenticated request to the Coolify REST API and prints the result in your shell. The CLI does not replace the Coolify server, Docker host, dashboard, or application runtime. It provides another control surface for the same Coolify installation.
You can use it for repeatable deployments, shell scripts, CI jobs, resource inventory, and operational work that would otherwise require repeated dashboard navigation. The same command style can target a Coolify Cloud account or a self-hosted instance, provided the API is enabled and the token has the required permissions.

Where each component runs

Installing the CLI on a VPS is optional. Install it on the machine from which you want to issue commands. Installing it on the same VPS as Coolify can be useful for local administration, but a laptop or CI runner works just as well when it can reach the API endpoint.
What you need before installing
Self-hosted VPS baseline
Coolify’s current self-hosting documentation gives a short-form minimum of 2 CPU cores, 2 GB of RAM, and 10 GB of disk. That is a documented minimum for running Coolify, not a performance guarantee for a particular number of applications, databases, images, builds, or logs. A busy workload may require additional capacity.

The VPS must accept SSH connections. Before running the installer, check the operating system, CPU architecture, firewall policy, listening ports, and available disk and memory. The self-hosting guide treats a VPS as a virtual private server from any provider; the provider is less important than the resources and access controls available on the selected plan.
- At least 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM, and 10 GB disk for the documented Coolify minimum.
- SSH access to the server, including a working login account and key or other approved authentication method.
- A supported operating system and architecture for the Coolify installation.
- Firewall rules that allow the management and application traffic your deployment requires.
- Enough headroom for container images, build layers, persistent data, and logs beyond the 10 GB minimum.
CLI-side prerequisites
The CLI installer supports Linux and macOS on amd64 and arm64. You also need a network route from the machine running the CLI to the Coolify API endpoint, plus an API token created in Coolify. The token must have permission for every operation you intend to run.
API access is enabled by default on Coolify Cloud. On self-hosted Coolify, an administrator must enable API access. If the API is disabled or blocked by a firewall or reverse proxy, installation of the binary will succeed but authentication and commands will fail.
Install Coolify on the VPS
If Coolify is not yet installed, the documented automated installer is:
curl -fsSL https://cdn.coollabs.io/coolify/install.sh | bashRun this on the VPS through an SSH session with the privileges required by the installer. Confirm that the server meets the operating-system, architecture, resource, and firewall checks first. The command installs the self-hosted Coolify service; it does not install the CLI on your laptop.
Finish the initial self-hosted setup
- Connect to the VPS over SSH and run the installation command.
- Open the Coolify dashboard at the address presented by the installation process.
- Create the first administrator account promptly. Leaving the initial setup unfinished increases the period during which the installation is not under your administrative control.
- Back up
/data/coolify/source/.env. Coolify identifies this file as containing installation secrets, includingAPP_KEY, which is required when restoring the installation. - Record the instance’s fully qualified URL. You will use that URL when creating a CLI context.
Treat the .env backup as sensitive secret material. Store it in a protected backup location and limit access to administrators who can restore the Coolify installation.

Install the CLI where you will run commands
Linux or macOS installer
The recommended installer for supported Linux and macOS systems is:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/coollabsio/coolify-cli/main/scripts/install.sh | bashFor a user-local installation when you do not have administrator access, use:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/coollabsio/coolify-cli/main/scripts/install.sh | bash -s -- --userThe installer supports amd64 and arm64. A user-local installation places the binary and related files in the user’s environment rather than requiring a system-wide write. Ensure the installation directory is on your PATH before trying the verification commands.
Other documented installation paths
The official CLI documentation also lists Homebrew, Windows PowerShell, and go install methods. Use the method appropriate for the operating system and packaging policy of the machine that will execute the commands. In a CI environment, pin and review the installer version according to your organization’s change-control process.
Verify the binary
Run:
coolify version
coolify --helpcoolify version confirms that the executable can run, while coolify --help shows the command tree available in that installed release. The first CLI command creates its configuration file if it does not already exist. Do not assume that flags documented for a different release are present locally; use the installed binary’s help output as the authoritative option list for scripts.
Create an API token and CLI context
Contexts hold the connection details for a Coolify target. Named contexts are useful when you work with both Coolify Cloud and one or more self-hosted instances because you can switch targets without repeatedly replacing a URL and token.

1. Create the token
In the Coolify dashboard, open /security/api-tokens and create an API token. Grant only the permissions needed by the commands or automation that will use it. A read-only inventory job should not receive deployment or server-management authority.
2. Save a Coolify Cloud token
For Coolify Cloud, save the token with:
coolify context set-token cloud <token>The command associates the token with the cloud context. Keep tokens out of shell history, shared scripts, screenshots, and public CI logs. Supply them through the protected secret mechanism of your shell or CI system when automation requires them.

3. Add a self-hosted context
For a self-hosted installation, add a named context containing the instance’s fully qualified URL and its API token, then select that context as the default. The exact subcommand and flags can vary by CLI release, so inspect:
coolify context --helpUse a distinct name such as production-vps or staging-vps rather than reusing cloud. A clear name prevents an automation job from accidentally targeting the wrong environment.

List contexts to inspect what is configured:
coolify context listSelect the intended context as the default using the context command shown by your installed version, then verify the connection:
coolify context verifyA successful verification establishes that the CLI can reach the configured endpoint and authenticate with the token. If it fails, determine whether the problem is the URL, network route, TLS or reverse-proxy configuration, API enablement, token validity, or token permissions before attempting a deployment.
5. Confirm access with inventory
Run an inventory command:
coolify resource listThe command uses the default context and lists applications, services, and databases that the token can access. Some releases also expose the plural spelling:
coolify resources listUse the spelling displayed by coolify --help if your installed version accepts only one form.
Inspect servers, projects, and resources
Once authentication works, begin with read operations. They reveal the UUIDs required by later commands and reduce the chance of changing the wrong resource.

Copy UUIDs directly from command output instead of relying on names that may be similar. In production scripts, make the selected context explicit in the job’s setup and print a non-secret target label before performing a mutating command.

Register a server from the terminal
To add a server, the documented syntax is:
coolify server add <server_name> <ip_address> <private_key_uuid> --port 22 --user root --validateReplace the placeholders with the server name, IP address, and UUID of a private key already known to Coolify. The command reference lists port 22 and user root as defaults; specify different values when your SSH service uses another port or account.
The --validate flag checks the connection immediately. Keep it during initial registration so a typo in the address, port, username, key UUID, or firewall policy is detected before the server is used for deployments.
Server-registration checks
- Confirm the IP address belongs to the intended VPS.
- Confirm the private-key UUID points to the correct key in the selected Coolify context.
- Verify that the SSH port is reachable from the Coolify server.
- Use the correct SSH username; do not assume
rootwhen the VPS provider requires a different administrative account. - Run the command against the intended context and review the validation result.
Start an application deployment
After identifying an application UUID, start its deployment with:
coolify app start <uuid>The command starts the application through the selected context. The CLI documentation also describes two relevant options:
--forceforces a rebuild.--instant-deployskips queuing.
Check the exact options exposed by your installed version before adding either flag:

coolify app start --helpUse a normal start when the existing build and queue behavior is appropriate. Choose --force only when a rebuild is necessary, and use --instant-deploy only when bypassing the queue is intentional for that workload. The installed help output is important because command flags can differ between CLI releases.
A cautious deployment sequence
- Set or select the intended context.
- Run
coolify context verify. - Run
coolify app listorcoolify resource listand identify the application UUID. - Review the application’s target, branch or image configuration, and current operational state in Coolify.
- Run
coolify app start <uuid>, adding a documented flag only when its effect is required. - Use the dashboard or the CLI commands available in your release to inspect the resulting deployment and resource state.
Use the CLI in scripts and CI
The CLI’s API-client design makes it suitable for repeatable jobs, but automation magnifies mistakes. A script should establish its target and credentials explicitly rather than depending on whatever context a shared runner happens to have selected.
Recommended automation controls
- Install the CLI on the runner or administration host, not necessarily on the Coolify VPS.
- Store the API token in the runner’s protected secret store and inject it only for the job that needs it.
- Use separate named contexts or credentials for development, staging, and production.
- Run a connection check before a mutating action.
- Inventory resources and resolve UUIDs before deployment rather than hard-coding a name that may be ambiguous.
- Capture command exit status and stop the job when verification or deployment fails.
- Review
coolify --helpand the relevant subcommand help after upgrading the CLI.
Do not print tokens in diagnostic output. Remember that command lines can be recorded by shell history, process inspection, or CI logs; prefer the CLI’s context and secret-handling mechanisms over embedding credentials in a repository.

Choosing a VPS for Coolify
Coolify’s self-hosting guide allows a VPS from any provider. The documented minimum is only the starting point for evaluating a plan. Compare the capacity and operational controls that affect your actual applications rather than choosing solely on the headline price.

Provider pricing and availability change over time, so evaluate the current plan details for the region you need. The CLI documentation exposes provider-related commands for several providers, but those commands do not change the underlying capacity, backup, or network trade-offs of the VPS you select.
Troubleshoot common failures
The installer runs, but coolify is not found
The binary may have been installed in a user-local directory that is not on PATH. Open a new shell, inspect the installer’s output, and add the reported directory to the user’s executable path according to the operating system. Then rerun coolify version.
context verify cannot connect
Check the fully qualified URL, DNS resolution, TLS certificate, reverse-proxy routing, firewall rules, and whether API access is enabled on the self-hosted instance. A working dashboard in a browser does not prove that the CLI machine can reach the same endpoint.
Authentication is rejected
Create or rotate the token at /security/api-tokens, confirm that the token belongs to the selected context, and verify that it has the permissions required by the command. Avoid troubleshooting by granting broad permissions permanently; correct the context or issue a token with the narrowly required scope.

First verify the active context. Then check the token’s permissions and whether the resources belong to another project, team, or instance. An empty result can indicate a valid connection with insufficient visibility rather than a failed installation.
Server validation fails
Check the IP address, SSH port, username, private-key UUID, and firewall policy. Confirm that the Coolify server—not merely your laptop—can reach the target VPS. If the server uses a nonstandard SSH port or a non-root administrative account, provide those values explicitly instead of relying on the documented defaults.
An application deployment behaves differently from the command you expected
Run coolify app start --help with the installed binary and verify the selected context and application UUID. Flags such as --force and --instant-deploy alter deployment behavior, so remove them unless their effects are intentional.
