The Bitcoin Lightning Network is a payment layer built on top of Bitcoin. Two users lock bitcoin in a shared 2-of-2 multisignature channel, then update their respective balances off-chain instead of publishing every payment to the blockchain. If the users do not have a direct channel, Lightning can forward the payment through a route of other channels using conditional contracts.

Bitcoin still provides the funding, settlement and enforcement layer. Channels open and close with on-chain transactions, and either participant can force a settlement on-chain if cooperation breaks down. Lightning is therefore not a replacement blockchain or a promise of guaranteed instant payments; it is a way to move many payments between Bitcoin settlements.

What the Lightning Network changes about a Bitcoin payment

A normal Bitcoin payment is an on-chain transaction. It is broadcast to the network, waits for confirmation, and pays the applicable Bitcoin transaction fee. Lightning moves the routine balance update away from the blockchain while retaining Bitcoin as the final authority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In a Lightning channel, the participants lock bitcoin together in an on-chain funding output. They then exchange signed updates describing how that channel’s balance should be divided. Those updates are not individually broadcast to Bitcoin. A channel can therefore support many payments without creating a separate blockchain transaction for each one.

The Lightning Network is the collection of these channels and the software that finds routes between them. A recipient does not need a direct channel with every possible payer. A payment can travel through intermediary nodes, provided each hop has enough usable liquidity in the required direction.

“At its core, a payment channel is a 2-of-2 multisignature contract between two parties holding bitcoin.”

How a Lightning payment channel works

1. Opening the channel on Bitcoin

Suppose Alice and Bob want to transact regularly. Their Lightning software creates a funding transaction that sends bitcoin to a 2-of-2 multisignature output. Both parties must authorize spending that shared output. The transaction is confirmed on the Bitcoin blockchain, establishing the channel’s total capacity.

The capacity is the total amount committed to the channel, not an amount that either side can freely spend in both directions. The channel begins with a particular balance split, and that split determines how much Alice can initially send to Bob and how much Bob can send to Alice.

2. Updating balances off-chain

After the channel is open, Alice and Bob can agree on a new balance state. For an illustrative example, imagine a channel funded with 0.010 BTC, initially divided equally. If Alice pays Bob 0.001 BTC, the agreed state changes to 0.004 BTC for Alice and 0.006 BTC for Bob. The numbers are illustrative; they are not a network statistic or a required channel size.

The payment does not create a new Bitcoin transaction. Instead, both wallets retain the latest valid signed commitment data. Each update replaces the prior balance arrangement for normal settlement purposes. The channel’s total capacity remains bounded by its funding and by applicable protocol or implementation limits; payments shift value between the two sides.

3. Closing cooperatively

When both participants agree to finish, they can create a cooperative close transaction. That transaction pays each party’s final balance on-chain. A cooperative close is usually the cleanest settlement path because both sides can sign the final allocation together.

4. Force-closing when cooperation stops

If a peer disappears, refuses to cooperate or otherwise stops responding, a participant can publish a force-close transaction based on the latest valid channel state. This makes Bitcoin the enforcement backstop, but it is not equivalent to an ordinary off-chain update. The close can require on-chain confirmation, incur a Bitcoin network fee, and involve waiting before some funds become spendable under the channel’s rules.

“Off-chain” therefore means that routine balance changes are not written to Bitcoin one by one. It does not mean that Bitcoin is irrelevant or that a channel can never return to the blockchain.

How a payment crosses multiple channels

The invoice starts the payment

For a conventional Lightning payment, the recipient creates an invoice and presents it to the sender. The signed invoice normally identifies the destination, specifies the amount when the payment is not open-ended, and includes validity details. The sender gives that invoice to a Lightning wallet or node.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Invoice-based payment requires interaction between sender and receiver at payment time. Other mechanisms, including LNURL and BOLT12, can change how a request is presented, but they still rely on Lightning’s channel and routing system.

The sender’s node selects a route

If the sender and recipient share no channel, the sender’s node looks for a path through intermediary nodes. Lightning uses source routing: the sending node selects the route and constructs the forwarding instructions, while each hop receives only the information needed to handle its part of the transfer.

A route might look conceptually like Alice → Carol → Dan → Bob. Alice’s node does not need to open a new channel with Bob for this individual payment. It needs a workable sequence of channels from Alice to Bob, with sufficient directional liquidity at every step.

Conditional forwarding links the hops

The forwarding mechanism uses an HTLC, short for Hash Time-Locked Contract. In plain terms, each hop receives a conditional promise: it can claim the incoming amount only if it forwards the payment and obtains the cryptographic secret, called a preimage, that proves the recipient-side condition was met.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Time locks are staggered along the route. Earlier hops have more time to resolve than later hops, giving a failed or abandoned payment a way to unwind safely. The conditions are designed to make the multi-hop transfer atomic: the forwarding steps complete together or the unresolved conditional transfers return according to their timeout rules.

This arrangement limits the need to trust an intermediary with custody. A routing node forwards a conditional payment and may earn a fee; it does not receive unilateral ownership merely because the payment passed through it. Atomic contract rules and the ability to settle on-chain provide the enforcement model.

Capacity, liquidity and why a route can fail

Total capacity is not directional spendable balance

A channel’s advertised capacity tells you how much bitcoin is committed to the channel in total. It does not tell you the exact split between the two participants. If a channel contains 0.010 BTC but nearly all of it is currently on the recipient-facing side, there may be little available to send in the opposite direction even though the capacity looks large.

For a payment to succeed, every hop needs enough balance moving in the required direction. A route can therefore appear to exist in the public network graph and still fail when attempted because one channel lacks sufficient directional liquidity.

Public information is incomplete by design

Public channel announcements can expose a channel’s existence, capacity and fee or timeout policy. They do not expose the precise private balance distribution. This protects some channel-state information, but it also means a sender cannot know with certainty that a route will work until the nodes attempt it.

Common failure conditions

  • A channel on the chosen route has insufficient balance in the payment direction.
  • The payment amount, plus forwarding fees, exceeds what one or more hops can carry.
  • A channel or node is temporarily offline or no longer advertises the route.
  • The invoice has expired, has already been paid, or does not match the amount being attempted.
  • A route’s fee or timeout requirements are incompatible with the sender’s limits.

Wallets generally respond by trying another route, reducing the amount, obtaining a new invoice or waiting for liquidity and connectivity to change. Repeated failure is not proof that the recipient is unreachable in every possible route; it may indicate a temporary or directional constraint.

Lightning fees and timing

Forwarding fees

Routing nodes can set fee policies for their channels. The sender’s total Lightning fee depends on the selected route and the policies of every forwarding hop. A longer or more expensive route can cost more than a direct route, and a route may need to be replaced if its fee or liquidity conditions do not work.

On-chain fees

Opening a channel, cooperatively closing it and force-closing it involve Bitcoin transactions. Their costs depend on Bitcoin’s network fee conditions and the size and timing of the transaction. These on-chain costs are separate from off-chain forwarding fees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Speed

Lightning is designed to avoid waiting for a new Bitcoin block for each small payment. Bitcoin.org characterizes Lightning payments as near-instant and typically lower cost than on-chain transactions, particularly for small, frequent payments. That is a broad design characterization, not a service-level guarantee. Wallet performance, route selection, liquidity, node availability and fee policies affect the experience.

Lightning compared with an on-chain Bitcoin payment

Dimension Lightning On-chain Bitcoin
Record of an individual payment Normally recorded as an off-chain channel-state update Each payment is a blockchain transaction
Typical confirmation experience Designed for payment completion without waiting for a new Bitcoin block Usually requires waiting for network confirmation
Liquidity requirement Requires open channels and sufficient directional liquidity along a route Uses the sender’s spendable on-chain balance and does not require a payment route
Fees Forwarding fees set by routing nodes; channel opening and closing also have on-chain fees Bitcoin transaction fee determined by network conditions and transaction demand
Settlement path Cooperative close or unilateral force close can settle the channel on Bitcoin The payment is settled directly by the blockchain transaction

Neither layer is universally superior. Lightning suits repeated payments where route liquidity is available, while on-chain Bitcoin is the direct settlement mechanism and the fallback when a channel must be opened, closed or enforced.

How to make a Lightning payment

  1. Use compatible software. Choose a wallet or node implementation that supports Lightning and that you understand how to back up and recover.
  2. Obtain the recipient’s payment request. Usually this is a signed invoice containing the destination, amount and expiry information. Confirm the recipient and amount before approving.
  3. Check the wallet’s estimate. The software should display the amount and any applicable routing fee. A quote can change if the wallet has to select a different route.
  4. Approve the payment. Your node selects a route and attempts to forward the conditional payment through each hop.
  5. Verify the result. A successful payment should produce a settled status and a receipt or transaction record in the wallet. If it fails, do not assume that retrying the identical route will help; request a fresh invoice or let the wallet find another route.

Receiving has its own liquidity consideration. The channels and route reaching your node must have enough balance flowing toward you. A wallet may therefore offer inbound-liquidity tools or recommend a different channel arrangement, depending on its implementation.

Security, privacy and operational limits

Keys and recovery remain your responsibility

Lightning software controls channel state and payment keys. Protect the wallet’s recovery data, keep software updated, and understand what happens if a device is lost or a channel peer becomes unreachable. A backup that restores only an on-chain seed may not restore every current channel state in the same way across implementations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Online interaction can matter

Some payment methods require the recipient or a service representing the recipient to interact during payment. The exact requirement depends on the wallet and protocol feature in use. Do not assume that every Lightning receiving method works identically while the recipient is offline.

Privacy is not absolute

Source routing is intended to limit the information exposed to individual forwarding nodes, and conditional forwarding reduces the need to trust intermediaries with custody. These properties do not justify saying that every Lightning payment is anonymous or fully private. Wallet design, channel announcements, node behavior, timing and implementation details can affect what parties learn.

Force close is a recovery mechanism, not a normal payment path

Publishing a force-close transaction can recover control when a channel cannot close cooperatively, but it brings on-chain fees, confirmation delays and channel-specific handling. Users should treat it as an enforcement and recovery option rather than the expected way to complete ordinary purchases.

Troubleshooting a failed Lightning payment

If the invoice is rejected immediately

Check whether it is expired, already paid, malformed or for a different amount. Ask the recipient for a newly generated invoice rather than repeatedly submitting an old request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the wallet reports no route

Confirm that the recipient’s node is reachable and that the amount is within the wallet’s limits. A direct channel is not required, but the network graph must contain a usable path with adequate directional liquidity. Trying a smaller amount can distinguish an amount-specific liquidity problem from a broader connectivity problem.

If a route is found but forwarding fails

The selected route may have stale or inaccurate liquidity assumptions. Allow the wallet to retry with a different path, and check whether the requested amount plus fees exceeds the available balance at a hop.

If a channel peer disappears

A channel can remain unresolved until the peer returns or you force-close it. Follow the wallet’s documented recovery procedure, preserve the latest channel backup data, and account for the on-chain confirmation and fee consequences before broadcasting a close.

Key takeaways

  • Lightning channels use an on-chain 2-of-2 funding arrangement and repeated off-chain balance updates.
  • A payment can cross several channels without a direct payer-recipient channel.
  • HTLC conditions and timelocks link forwarding hops so an intermediary cannot simply claim a payment without forwarding it.
  • Total channel capacity does not reveal directional spendable liquidity, which is a major reason routes can fail.
  • Routing fees, channel opening and closing fees, speed and success rates vary; none is universally fixed.
  • Bitcoin remains the settlement and enforcement layer through cooperative or force closes.
