Stranger Than Heaven is an upcoming single-player action-adventure from RGG Studio and SEGA. It follows Makoto Daito across a 50-year journey that begins in 1915 San Francisco and moves through five imagined Japanese city settings, with brawling combat, entertainment-industry management, and era-specific activities tied to character growth. SEGA currently lists January 15, 2027, as its release date for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Steam.
What Stranger Than Heaven is
Stranger Than Heaven is a story-led, single-player action-adventure game being developed by RGG Studio, the team behind SEGA’s long-running urban crime and drama games. SEGA describes it as a 50-year story about men searching for a place to belong. The structure spans five eras and five Japanese city inspirations, rather than presenting one contemporary city throughout a single timeline.
The game is not released yet. As of October 2026, the announced material establishes its premise, settings, cast, release plans, and broad gameplay systems, but it does not provide a finished review, independent performance testing, or a complete account of the story.

When and where the story begins
Makoto Daito in 1915 San Francisco
The opening takes place in San Francisco in 1915. Makoto Daito is a teenager born to an American father and a Japanese mother. SEGA says that his appearance exposes him to persecution. After losing his parents, he decides to travel to Japan, his mother’s homeland, in the hope of finding somewhere he can belong.

Makoto sneaks aboard a suspicious ship. A fateful encounter on that voyage changes the direction of his life and launches the longer journey that the game follows across the next five decades. Official material presents this as the beginning of the narrative, not a synopsis of its final destination, so the eventual outcome of Makoto’s journey remains undisclosed.
SEGA’s English announcement uses the line “A Five Decade Battle for a Place to Call Home.” It is official marketing language describing the game’s central theme, not a quotation from a named speaker.
The five eras and Japanese city settings
After the San Francisco opening, the game moves through five Japanese settings. SEGA describes them as imagined versions inspired by cities that existed in those periods. They are not presented as documentary recreations, and the San Francisco prologue should not be counted as a sixth Japanese setting.

| 1915 | Kokura, Fukuoka | Steelworks and a lively working population |
| 1929 | Kure, Hiroshima | Naval shipyards and a strong yakuza influence |

| 1951 | Atami, Shizuoka | A postwar tourist destination |
| 1965 | Shinjuku, Tokyo | A major entertainment district described as chaotic |
1915: Kokura-inspired industrial Japan
The first Japanese era is inspired by Kokura in Fukuoka. Its defining backdrop is industrial: steelworks and a busy working population. This setting follows Makoto’s 1915 departure from San Francisco and places the story in a community shaped by heavy industry and labor.
1929: Kure-inspired naval and criminal power
The 1929 setting draws from Kure in Hiroshima, known in the game’s description for naval shipyards and a strong yakuza presence. That combination suggests a city where military industry and organized crime are important parts of the local power structure, although the announced materials do not spell out the missions or factions Makoto will encounter there.
1943: Minami-inspired entertainment district
The 1943 chapter is inspired by Minami in Osaka. SEGA characterizes it as a major entertainment district existing amid international tensions. The period places show business and nightlife alongside an unsettled wartime environment.

1951: Atami-inspired postwar resort
The 1951 setting takes inspiration from Atami in Shizuoka, presented as a postwar tourist destination. Its identity differs sharply from the industrial and wartime environments of the earlier eras, giving the five-part structure a distinctly changing social and economic backdrop.
1965: Chaotic Shinjuku
The final announced era is 1965, inspired by Shinjuku in Tokyo. SEGA describes it as a major entertainment district that is chaotic. This is the latest point in the announced timeline and completes the movement from 1915 to 1965.
How the announced gameplay works
Flexible, physical combat
SEGA describes a flexible combat system intended to convey the raw physicality of brawling. The announcement establishes hand-to-hand action as a core part of play, but it does not specify the full move set, weapon rules, difficulty options, control scheme, or how combat changes between eras.
Makoto as an entertainment impresario
Combat is only one side of Makoto’s activities. SEGA says he can act as an impresario and pursue success in entertainment. That makes the game’s show-business systems part of the central design rather than a decorative side activity. The available announcements do not yet define the size of the talent roster, the financial model, the venues, or the consequences of individual management decisions.
Everyday activities affect progression
A September 2026 SEGA update says ordinary activities in the cities—including walking, eating, and recreation—connect to character growth and skill unlocks. The way players spend time in each era affects Makoto’s abilities. In practical terms, exploration and leisure are announced as progression choices, not merely optional scenery.
- Walking through a city is tied to the game’s broader growth structure.
- Eating contributes to the announced relationship between daily life and character development.
- Recreation can help unlock skills or otherwise influence Makoto’s abilities.
- Time spent in each era affects the abilities available to Makoto.
These are announced features, not independently tested findings. Official material does not establish how deep the systems are, how much time they require, how progression is balanced, or whether any activity can be missed.

Cast and music
Announced performers
SEGA’s May 2026 overview names the following cast members: Yu Shirota, Dean Fujioka, Snoop Dogg, Moeka Hoshi, Tori Kelly, Akio Otsuka, Tokuma Nishioka, Satoshi Fujihara of OFFICIAL HIGE DANDISM, Cordell Broadus, and Ado. A June announcement added Tupac Shakur to the project’s cast information.
For Tupac’s character design, SEGA says RGG Studio worked with Amaru Entertainment and used archival footage and photographs as references. The announcement confirms that creative process but does not provide a complete character list or describe every performer’s role.
The main theme
The main theme is also titled “STRANGER THAN HEAVEN.” SEGA says it is performed by Snoop Dogg, Satoshi Fujihara, Ado, and Tori Kelly. The song’s title matches the game’s title, but the available information does not identify its placement in the story or describe a complete soundtrack.

Rating and age guidance
A September 2026 Japanese SEGA update lists a CERO D rating, intended for ages 17 and older. That is Japanese rating information. The currently available announcements do not confirm ratings from other territories, so the Japanese classification should not be presented as the final ESRB, PEGI, or equivalent rating elsewhere.

Why the setting matters to the premise
The five-era structure lets the game treat belonging as a changing historical problem rather than a single location-based conflict. Makoto begins as a mixed-heritage teenager facing persecution in 1915 San Francisco, then enters Japanese communities shaped by factories, shipyards, organized crime, wartime pressure, tourism, and postwar entertainment. Each setting supplies a different social environment in which he must decide where he fits.
The city inspirations also explain why everyday activity is part of progression. Walking, eating, and recreation are framed as ways to experience each era and develop Makoto, while brawling and entertainment management give him more direct tools for survival and advancement. How successfully those ideas work in play will only be clear once the finished game is available.
Bottom line for prospective players
Stranger Than Heaven is best understood as an unreleased, multi-era RGG Studio adventure centered on Makoto Daito’s search for belonging. Its distinctive announced features are the movement from 1915 San Francisco through five Japanese period settings, physical brawling, entertainment-industry play, and progression influenced by how players spend time in each city. The confirmed launch date is January 15, 2027, with PS5, Xbox, PC, cloud, and Steam availability planned, plus a PS5 physical edition and a larger Collector’s Edition. Everything beyond those announced pillars—especially story resolution, system depth, performance, and regional retail details—still awaits the finished release.
