Steam Early Access is a paid game purchase made while development is still underway. You receive the version that exists now, not a guarantee of every feature, date, or design goal announced for the future. Steam advises buyers to purchase only when they are excited to play the current build and to wait if the present state does not appeal to them.
For Salt and Soil, the developer’s Steam listing describes a playable historical family-simulation campaign spanning 1607 to 1900. It also says that characters, homestead businesses, and the economy are simpler than intended for version 1.0, while the AI-generated Family Council currently requires an internet connection. The listing, checked on October 13, 2026, targets version 1.0 for the first half of 2027 and says the price will increase at that point; those are plans, not guarantees.
What Steam Early Access means
Early Access lets a developer sell a game before development is complete. The purchase gives you access to the current playable build and, normally, subsequent updates as development continues. It is not the same as buying a finished game with a conventional expansion roadmap: core systems, balance, interface, performance, content, and even the eventual scope can change.
Steam’s buyer guidance puts the practical test plainly: if you are not excited to play the game in its current state, wait for a future update or the full release. That advice matters because a store page often contains two different kinds of information:

Treat the first category as the basis for a purchase decision. Treat the second as a possible direction. A roadmap is optional guidance, not a contract, and Steam’s roadmap documentation recommends that developers avoid specific promises unless they are confident they can deliver them.
Steam may display a notice when an Early Access game has gone more than 12 months without an update and an update-type event. That notice signals update inactivity; it does not, by itself, prove that a game is abandoned. You still need to read the developer’s recent announcements and judge whether the current build is worthwhile on its own.
What Salt and Soil is presented as
The Steam listing presents Salt and Soil as a frontier family simulation set across North America. The developer says the planned Early Access build is playable from the start of the historical campaign in 1607 through 1900. These are descriptions supplied by the developer, not results from an independent review or hands-on test. “Playable from start to finish” means the developer says a complete campaign can be played; it does not mean every system has reached its final depth or balance.

The stated 1607–1900 span is the most important part of the current proposition. You can establish a homestead, manage a family, pass control to later generations, trade, interact with neighbours, and encounter historical events on the North American map. The design therefore depends on consequences accumulating over decades of game time rather than resolving within one short session.

That scope can appeal to players who enjoy planning across generations, but it also changes how you should evaluate an unfinished build. A campaign may be technically finishable while individual systems remain provisional. Look for whether the current family, trade, and event loops already give you a satisfying reason to continue, rather than assuming the long timeline automatically guarantees depth.
Family and succession
The listing identifies the family and generational succession as central systems. Decisions made by one generation can shape the circumstances inherited by the next. The developer specifically explains that consequences may appear decades later, which is one reason it wants campaigns played by many different people to expose balance problems that a solo developer cannot reliably find.

Homestead activity, businesses, trading relationships, neighbouring communities, and historical events form the surrounding simulation. The developer cautions that characters, homestead businesses, and the economy are currently simpler than intended for version 1.0. If your priority is a highly detailed social simulation, production chain, or market model, consider that disclosure a description of the present limitation, not merely a minor footnote.
Ten listed languages
The store listing says 10 languages are available. “Available” is a developer-provided store description; verify the language matrix on Steam if a particular interface, subtitle, or text-translation option is essential to you.
How the AI-generated Family Council works
The Family Council is described as a core feature rather than an optional novelty. Each year, generative AI produces some family-council narrative text and structured choice outcomes from the current campaign state. The listing says generation is constrained by the historical setting, the family’s data, localization rules, and the game’s gameplay schema.

In practical terms, the council is intended to turn the state of your family and homestead into an annual decision point. Its output is not presented as unrestricted chat. It is framed by the simulation’s data and rules, then used to create narrative text and choices that can affect the campaign.
The current internet requirement
The developer says an internet connection is required because the Family Council is generated by AI. That requirement is part of the current product fit:

A separate Steam community playtest announcement describes that playtest as early and warns that bugs, rough edges, and balance problems are expected while inviting feedback. That announcement supports the idea that development is feedback-seeking; it is not an independent review and does not confirm that every issue will be resolved in the final Early Access build.

Should you buy Salt and Soil in Early Access?
There is no universal “worth it” answer without a review or playtest. The useful decision is whether the current description matches what you want to play now, while accepting the disclosed limitations.

Buying now makes more sense if you:
- Want a long historical campaign that is described as playable from 1607 through 1900.
- Enjoy family succession, homestead management, trade, neighbours, and historical events even when some systems are still being refined.
- Are comfortable with simpler characters, businesses, and economic simulation during development.
- Can reliably play with an internet connection and are comfortable with an AI-generated Family Council.
- Want to provide feedback on long-term balance and accept bugs or rough edges.
Waiting is safer if you:
- Need a finished, deeply simulated economy or highly developed characters at purchase.
- Require offline play today.
- Do not want generative-AI narrative to be part of a core system.
- Would be disappointed if a planned feature, mod support, or date changes.
- Are deciding primarily on the expected future price advantage rather than the current game. The listing says the price will rise at 1.0, but no verified current price and no guaranteed release outcome establish that buying now is financially better.
The correct comparison is not between two editions; no distinct Salt and Soil editions are established in the reviewed information. Your real choice is the current Early Access build versus waiting for a later update or 1.0.
