Proof of Transfer (PoX) is Stacks’ consensus and block-production system. Instead of competing with electricity-intensive hash calculations, Stacks miners commit already-mined bitcoin (BTC) through Bitcoin transactions. A cryptographic, bid-weighted selection process chooses a miner to produce Stacks blocks and rewards that miner with newly issued STX and transaction fees. STX holders can lock their tokens as Stackers, validate and sign blocks, and receive the committed BTC as a reward.
Bitcoin therefore supplies economic commitments, verifiable randomness inputs, and an anchoring reference; Stacks remains a separate execution layer with its own blocks, state, and Clarity smart contracts. The 2024 Nakamoto hard fork changed the cadence: one selected miner can now produce multiple Stacks blocks during a tenure between Bitcoin sortitions, while Stackers validate and sign those blocks.
PoX in plain language
Proof of Transfer links two different assets and two different chains. Miners transfer BTC to compete for the right to write Stacks blocks. STX holders lock STX at the protocol level and perform signer duties. BTC commitments are distributed to participating Stackers, while miners receive STX issuance and Stacks transaction fees.

This is not Bitcoin mining. A PoX miner does not perform Bitcoin proof-of-work or add blocks to the Bitcoin blockchain. The miner uses Bitcoin transactions as part of Stacks’ leader-election and commitment mechanism, then executes Stacks transactions on the Stacks network.

How Proof of Transfer works
1. Miners register and commit BTC
A prospective miner participates in the Stacks mining process by submitting a BTC commitment through Bitcoin-layer activity. The commitment is an economic bid, not payment for computing power. The protocol uses a verifiable random function and bid-weighted selection to choose among eligible miners. A larger commitment can affect selection probability, but committing BTC does not guarantee a win.
The committed BTC is transferred according to PoX rules rather than burned as electricity costs. This gives Bitcoin-denominated value to the competition while allowing Stacks to use Bitcoin’s publicly verifiable transaction history.
2. Bitcoin-linked selection chooses a Stacks miner
Bitcoin blocks provide the sequence in which commitments and sortitions are observed. Once a sortition selects a miner, that miner becomes responsible for building Stacks blocks during its assigned tenure. Bitcoin is supplying inputs and an anchor; it is not executing the Stacks transactions inside those blocks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. The miner builds and publishes Stacks blocks
The selected miner collects pending Stacks transactions, runs smart-contract execution, and proposes blocks containing the resulting state transitions. Contract code runs on Stacks, including contracts written in Clarity. Stacks nodes store and validate this separate chain rather than treating Stacks transactions as Bitcoin transactions.
After the Nakamoto upgrade, a miner can produce a sequence of Stacks blocks during one tenure. This replaced the earlier one-to-one rhythm in which Stacks block production tracked individual Bitcoin blocks more directly.
4. Stackers validate, sign, and propagate
STX holders who participate as Stackers lock STX through the protocol and may be selected for signer roles. They check proposed blocks, sign valid blocks, and propagate those signatures. Their signatures provide an additional consensus step between miner proposals and the accepted Stacks history.

Stackers do not hand custody of their tokens to a miner. The locked STX remains in the holder’s wallet, but the protocol prevents spending it until the lock period and associated conditions are complete. Signer participation is therefore a protocol commitment rather than a transfer of ownership.
5. Rewards move in opposite directions
PoX deliberately sends different rewards to different participants:
- Miners: newly minted STX and Stacks transaction fees, subject to the protocol’s issuance and fee rules.
- Stackers: BTC commitments from participating miners, distributed according to the stacking rules and the signer’s participation.
Reward eligibility depends on following the required protocol steps. PoX has no slashing mechanism that automatically destroys a signer’s STX for a bad signature. However, failing signer duties can result in lost BTC rewards and can prevent a participant from unlocking STX as expected. “No slashing” therefore does not mean that participation is consequence-free.
What Bitcoin does—and does not do—in PoX
Bitcoin’s role
- Commitment rail: miners make BTC commitments through Bitcoin transactions.
- Sortition input: Bitcoin-linked information helps determine which miner wins a selection.
- Anchor: Stacks history is related to an external, independently operated chain with a widely observed block history.
- Reward source: the BTC committed by miners flows to eligible Stackers rather than to Bitcoin miners as proof-of-work revenue.
What remains on Stacks
- Stacks blocks, transactions, and account state are produced and maintained by Stacks nodes.
- Clarity smart contracts execute on Stacks, not inside Bitcoin’s scripting environment.
- Miner block proposals and Stacker signatures are Stacks consensus actions.
- Stacks transaction fees are paid in STX and follow Stacks’ own fee and execution rules.
The practical result is a two-layer design: Bitcoin supplies settlement-related evidence and economic commitments, while Stacks supplies programmable execution. A Bitcoin transaction can influence who gets to build Stacks blocks without containing the full state transition that those blocks perform.
What the Nakamoto upgrade changed
The Nakamoto upgrade was a 2024 Stacks hard fork. Before it, Stacks block production followed a closer one-block-per-Bitcoin-block cadence. Under the post-upgrade design, a Bitcoin sortition selects a miner for a tenure, and that miner may produce multiple Stacks blocks before the next relevant sortition. Stackers validate and sign the sequence.
Stacks documentation describes the design goals as faster blocks, stronger Bitcoin-linked finality, reduced exposure to Bitcoin-miner maximal-extractable value (MEV) affecting PoX, and greater resistance to reorganizations. These are protocol-design objectives, not a guarantee that every deployment or workload has identical latency or reorganization behavior.

The project’s documentation has described the release as providing “100% Bitcoin finality.” That phrase should be read in context: finality depends on the stated assumptions about Bitcoin miners, Stacks signers, network connectivity, and the honest behavior needed for the protocol to make progress. It is not an unconditional promise that no adversary can ever reorganize a history.
Reward cycles and timing
The official PoX overview describes a reward cycle of 2,100 Bitcoin blocks. It divides that cycle into a 2,000-block reward phase and a 100-block prepare phase. Because the unit is Bitcoin blocks rather than calendar days, the elapsed time varies with Bitcoin’s actual block production.
These figures describe the documented cycle structure, not a fixed number of days. PoX contracts and parameters can change through protocol upgrades; check the currently deployed contract before making a present-tense operational decision. The documentation lists PoX 4 with a date of April 22, 2024.

STX stays in the holder’s wallet
Stacking locks STX at the protocol level. The holder’s wallet still controls the tokens, but the locked balance cannot be spent during the lock period. This differs from sending coins to a miner or depositing them into a custodial account.
Signer work is an active responsibility
A participant who only locks STX but does not satisfy signer requirements should not assume that BTC rewards are automatic. The protocol expects signers to receive, validate, sign, and propagate blocks. Operational failures can forfeit rewards and complicate unlocking.
PoX does not use proof-of-work mining on Stacks
PoX miners are not purchasing specialized hardware to calculate hashes for a Stacks chain. Their scarce input is BTC committed through Bitcoin transactions. Stacks still requires nodes to validate execution and maintain the chain, but leader selection is economically tied to BTC transfer rather than electricity expenditure.

Security and liveness assumptions
Bitcoin anchoring improves the cost and visibility of rewriting history, but it does not remove every attack path. Stacks’ technical specifications identify explicit threat assumptions that readers should understand before treating PoX as an absolute security guarantee.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Bitcoin-miner threat: the specification states that control of 51% of malicious Bitcoin mining power could be used to reorganize the Stacks chain or double-spend in the relevant threat model.
- Stacker liveness threshold: the specification says the chain can halt if Stackers cannot reach 70% consensus on block validity.
- Network and key availability: signers must be online and able to communicate and use their signing keys. A valid economic commitment alone does not make a signer available.
The 51% and 70% figures are published protocol assumptions, not independent measurements of current mining or signer concentration. They explain what the design considers a critical failure condition.
PoX compared with other consensus approaches
| Question | Stacks PoX | Bitcoin proof-of-work | Typical proof-of-stake design |
|---|---|---|---|
| What participants commit? | Miners transfer BTC; Stackers lock STX. | Miners expend electricity and hardware capacity. | Validators lock the network’s native asset. |
| How are leaders selected? | Bitcoin-linked sortition using verifiable randomness and bid weighting. | Hash-based competition; the valid chain follows accumulated work. | Protocol-specific stake-weighted or randomized selection. |
| Where does execution occur? | On the separate Stacks chain, including Clarity contracts. | On Bitcoin, within Bitcoin’s transaction and script limits. | On the relevant proof-of-stake chain. |
| Who validates or signs? | Stacks nodes validate; Stackers sign and propagate blocks. | Bitcoin nodes validate proof-of-work blocks and transactions. | Validators attest or sign according to that chain’s rules. |
| How do rewards flow? | Miners receive STX and fees; BTC commitments go to eligible Stackers. | Bitcoin miners receive block subsidies and transaction fees. | Validators generally receive issuance and fees, with penalties varying by protocol. |
| Main stated failure assumptions | Bitcoin reorganization power, signer participation, and the 70% validity-consensus condition matter. | Security depends on the proof-of-work chain’s economic and networking assumptions. | Security depends on stake distribution, validator behavior, and that protocol’s fault thresholds. |
These systems are not interchangeable labels. PoX combines a transferred external asset with a separate smart-contract chain, so comparing it only by saying “it uses Bitcoin” or “it uses staking” misses the roles of miners, Stackers, and execution nodes.

Clarity contract
Stacks documentation identifies PoX as a Clarity smart contract and identifies pox-4 as the stacking contract. Contract names and deployment details can change with upgrades, so treat the contract identifier as a way to inspect the current implementation rather than as a permanent promise.
PoX API information
The Stacks API reference documents a /v2/pox endpoint for PoX information. Node data includes fields such as Bitcoin burn-chain height and PoX consensus information. A dated Stacks update on February 26, 2026, also announced endpoints for querying PoX-related Bitcoin transactions by block or address.
API paths describe the interface, not an uptime or rate-limit guarantee. For an operational integration, confirm the current API reference, node version, response schema, authentication requirements, and service status before shipping code.

A safe inspection workflow
- Identify the network and node or API instance you intend to query; do not assume a testnet response applies to mainnet.
- Request the current PoX information from
/v2/poxand record the reported Bitcoin burn-chain height and consensus fields. - Check the deployed stacking contract identifier, such as
pox-4, against the network’s current contract list. - Use the dated transaction-query endpoints only after confirming their current paths and response formats in the latest API documentation.
- Record the Bitcoin block height and Stacks block height alongside any result so a later parameter change does not make the observation ambiguous.
Common misconceptions
“Stacks miners mine Bitcoin.”
No. They submit BTC commitments and compete for Stacks block production. Bitcoin miners continue to perform Bitcoin proof-of-work independently.
“Stacking sends my STX to someone else.”
No. The protocol locks the STX in the holder’s wallet. Spending is restricted during the lock period, but ownership is not transferred to a miner.
“No slashing means nothing can go wrong.”
No. PoX does not use slashing, yet missed signer duties can cost BTC rewards and affect the ability to unlock STX.
“Bitcoin executes Stacks smart contracts.”
No. Bitcoin contributes commitment and anchoring information. Stacks nodes execute Clarity contracts and maintain Stacks state.
“A Bitcoin anchor makes reorganizations impossible.”
No. The technical specification identifies conditions under which malicious Bitcoin mining power or insufficient Stacker agreement could disrupt or reorganize the system. Bitcoin anchoring changes the cost and evidence of an attack; it does not erase the threat model.
Bottom line
PoX is a Bitcoin-linked consensus mechanism for a separate smart-contract blockchain. Miners transfer BTC to compete for Stacks block production, Stackers lock STX to validate and sign those blocks, and rewards flow in both directions: STX and fees to miners, BTC commitments to Stackers. Nakamoto’s tenure-based production lets one miner create multiple Stacks blocks between Bitcoin sortitions, with Stackers signing the sequence. Understanding the design requires keeping both layers in view: Bitcoin supplies commitments and anchoring, while Stacks performs execution and maintains its own chain under explicit security and liveness assumptions.
