Squadron 42 is the single-player campaign set alongside Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium Games’ persistent online game. They are related experiences, not interchangeable names: Squadron 42 is an authored campaign, while Star Citizen is the live game world players access with an RSI account and a game package. Squadron 42 is still in development and is not available to download, according to RSI’s February 4, 2026 support guidance.
What is Squadron 42?
Squadron 42 is a single-player campaign connected to the Star Citizen universe. RSI’s getting-started checklist describes it as a campaign and says it remains in development. It is not another name for Star Citizen’s live persistent experience.
Chris Roberts explained the original creative rationale in a 2020 RSI Letter from the Chairman: “With the increase in scope for Star Citizen I felt I needed to build a single-player game to rival Star Citizen’s multiplayer ambition.” That describes the intended relationship between the projects, not their current readiness or a promise about specific features.
How does it connect to Star Citizen?
The two experiences share a project and universe, but serve different play styles. RSI’s current onboarding material distinguishes the single-player Squadron 42 campaign from Star Citizen’s live environment, which players access through an RSI account and a game package.

| Experience or access | What it means |
|---|---|
| Squadron 42 | A single-player campaign; RSI says it is in development and not currently available to download. |
| Star Citizen | The live persistent game experience; RSI says access requires an RSI account and a game package. |
| Pledge containing Squadron 42 | RSI says owners can download the campaign after development, testing, and release. |
| Star Citizen game package | Provides access to Star Citizen; do not assume it also includes Squadron 42 without checking its listed contents. |
An older RSI FAQ described the broader concept as spanning a persistent world and an offline single-player campaign. For present availability and access, RSI’s newer support guidance is the more relevant reference.

Does a Star Citizen purchase include Squadron 42?
Not necessarily. RSI’s Pledges FAQ says a game package is required to play Star Citizen, while Squadron 42 access is associated with a pledge that contains it. Pledge contents can vary, so check the exact current listing before buying rather than relying on the product name or assuming one purchase includes both experiences.

When is Squadron 42 expected to release?
PC Gamer reported in September 2026 that CIG had shifted the intended release window from 2026 to Q2 2027, attributing the update to Chris Roberts: PC Gamer’s report on the revised window. Treat Q2 2027 as a reported target, not a guaranteed release date. RSI’s cited availability guidance confirms that the game remains unavailable, but does not establish that target as an official release commitment.
