No: you do not need to own Star Citizen to play Squadron 42. They are presented as separate experiences: Squadron 42 is a single-player campaign set in the Star Citizen universe, while Star Citizen is a persistent online game. But Squadron 42 is still in development and is not available to download. Cloud Imperium Games’ latest stated target is Q2 2027, not a confirmed release date.
What is Squadron 42?
Squadron 42 is a single-player campaign in the Star Citizen universe. The premise puts you in the role of a recruit in the United Empire of Earth Navy. It is a story-focused game, not the name of Star Citizen’s live persistent game or a mode you must launch through that game.
Cloud Imperium Games chairman Chris Roberts has described it as “my spiritual successor to Wing Commander.” That gives a sense of the campaign’s lineage and intent, but it does not mean Squadron 42 is a remake of that series. It is a distinct project set in the broader Star Citizen setting.
The setting is shared, but the format is different. Squadron 42 is built around a authored campaign and a defined player role, whereas Star Citizen is the continuing online environment in which players access its persistent game systems. Knowing the universe or following Star Citizen is therefore optional context, not an ownership requirement for the campaign.

What playing it is expected to involve
PC Gamer describes the campaign as combining spaceship combat with on-foot first-person combat and puzzle-solving. That suggests a mixture of missions rather than a space-flight-only game: some sequences take place aboard or around ships, while others involve first-person activity on foot. PC Gamer also reports that the campaign can be played offline.
Those details come from secondary reporting, rather than a final feature checklist in the official account and download FAQs. Since the game has not been released, treat them as descriptions of the planned experience, not a guarantee that every feature, mission structure or offline behavior will be identical at launch.
Do you need Star Citizen to play Squadron 42?
No. The two are framed as separate experiences, and PC Gamer explicitly reports that players do not have to own one to play the other. RSI’s getting-started information describes access to Star Citizen’s live servers as requiring an RSI account and a Game Package. Separately, RSI says an account with a pledge containing Squadron 42 will be able to download that game after it is completed, tested and released.

If you want only the campaign, you do not need to buy into Star Citizen’s live environment just to qualify for Squadron 42. Conversely, owning a Squadron 42 pledge does not automatically answer every question about access to Star Citizen’s online servers; RSI describes that access separately through its Game Package requirement.
Because the campaign is unreleased, the final launch storefront, account flow and any sign-in steps are not established. The safest conclusion is about ownership: Star Citizen is not presented as a prerequisite. Do not assume that you will need to purchase, download or maintain the live game simply because both products use the same universe or account ecosystem.

In practical terms, choose based on the experience you want. A campaign buyer is looking for a finite, solo-focused game and can wait for its release. A Star Citizen buyer is choosing access to a live environment and its ongoing online activities. Buying both is an option for someone who wants both formats, not a technical requirement imposed by Squadron 42.

Can you buy Squadron 42 without Star Citizen?
In principle, the games are separate and Squadron 42 is not described as requiring ownership of Star Citizen. In practice, you cannot currently buy it as a released game and download it: RSI says it remains in development. RSI’s support information describes future download access for accounts that own a pledge containing Squadron 42.
The available information does not establish the current standalone price, whether a standalone Squadron 42 pledge is currently available in the RSI store, or the final purchase route when the game launches. It also does not establish platform availability beyond a Steam listing reported in October 2026. A Steam page showing a title or release window is not the same as a confirmed launch-day purchase policy, and it does not settle whether other storefronts or platforms will be supported.
Check the live RSI store and the game’s current listing immediately before paying; do not rely on old prices, screenshots, bundle guides or forum posts as current offers. Star Citizen’s pledge catalog can contain several kinds of items, so the product name and contents matter more than a package’s marketing label.

What to check before spending money
- Read the exact package contents. RSI explains that pledges can cover different items, including game packages, standalone ships, ship upgrades, subscriptions and other items. Confirm that the specific pledge says it contains Squadron 42 rather than assuming every Star Citizen package includes it.
- Separate campaign access from online-game access. If your goal is the campaign, do not buy a Star Citizen Game Package solely on the assumption it is required for Squadron 42. RSI describes those as separate access terms.
- Verify the current offer and terms. Prices and store options are not established by the official FAQ details summarized here and may change. Use the live RSI store listing rather than an old guide or a resale listing.
- Check whether the item is a pledge or a released product. A pledge can reserve or provide a future entitlement, but Squadron 42 is not currently downloadable. Payment today should not be interpreted as immediate access.
- Do not treat a manual mention as a current product listing. RSI says some pledge options may include a PDF or printed game manual, with availability closer to completion and release. That does not establish that a printed manual or any particular pledge is currently available.
- Keep the release status in view. An account may be associated with a future entitlement while the game remains unavailable. RSI’s stated download timing is after completion, testing and release, not at the moment a pledge is created.
When does Squadron 42 come out?
Cloud Imperium Games selected Q2 2027 as its target release window, according to Chris Roberts’s statement on August 27, 2026. The statement said the earlier plan had been Q4 2026 and that Q2 2027 was judged a better release period. Roberts also said further plans and a specific date would be announced later.

That provides a later cross-check of the same quarter, but it is not a day-specific commitment. A store listing and a company target can both change, particularly for a project that is still being completed and tested.
Q2 2027 is therefore a target window, not a guaranteed ship date. No specific day was announced in the August statement. RSI’s download FAQ, updated February 4, 2026, said the game was still in development and unavailable to download; the later release-window announcement did not mean it had become playable. Check current RSI or store information for changes rather than treating the target as a confirmed appointment.
Can it be played offline?
PC Gamer describes Squadron 42 as playable offline, which fits its single-player campaign format. That is useful if you are comparing it with Star Citizen’s persistent online game. However, the official FAQs cited for account and download access do not provide a final technical offline specification, such as whether an initial activation, patch or periodic account check will be required.
Until launch documentation says more, the careful answer is that offline play is reported as part of the planned experience, while the exact activation and update requirements remain to be confirmed. Do not infer from offline campaign play that every account or installation step will be independent of RSI.

Which one should you choose?
The decision is about the kind of game you want, not whether one is needed to unlock the other.
- Choose Squadron 42 alone if you want the single-player campaign and are willing to wait for it to be completed and released. There is no need to buy Star Citizen simply to have the online game in your account.
- Choose Star Citizen as well only if you also want its persistent live game. RSI’s Game Package requirement applies to access to those live servers; it is a separate access question from the Squadron 42 campaign.
- Wait before purchasing if you need a confirmed release day, a verified standalone price, or certainty about the final store route. Those details have not been established in the current statements.
- Recheck the listing at launch if platform choice matters to you. The October 2026 Steam report confirms a listed PC storefront window, but it does not by itself define every supported platform or final system requirement.

The reliable practical answer is that Squadron 42 is a separate single-player campaign, and owning Star Citizen is not presented as a requirement to play it. Its planned setting is the Star Citizen universe, with the player cast as a United Empire of Earth Navy recruit. Reported gameplay includes ship combat, on-foot first-person sections, puzzle-solving and offline play.
What is not yet settled is equally important: the exact launch day, current standalone price, whether a standalone option is presently listed, the final purchase route, platform coverage beyond the reported Steam listing and any detailed activation requirements. The game is not currently available to download, so no claim of immediate access should be attached to an existing pledge.
RSI’s support pages are the clearest source for current development and pledge-based download access. The Q2 2027 target comes from Roberts’s August 27, 2026 statement, while PC Gamer’s October 10 report corroborates that the Steam listing showed the same window. A target window and a store listing are useful indicators, but neither guarantees a release date.
