Silicon photonics is a semiconductor-based way to build circuits that generate, guide, modulate and detect light. In a data-centre network, those circuits can form part of a pluggable optical transceiver or an optical engine located beside a switch or compute chip. They move data through fibre at high rates and over distances that become difficult for copper and ordinary board traces.
The practical benefit is not simply a faster component. A useful link must match its Ethernet standard, lane rate, fibre, connector, host port, power and cooling budget, and maintenance model. Silicon photonics can increase bandwidth density and reduce the length of very high-speed electrical connections, but packaging, thermal design, reliability and serviceability determine whether those gains appear in a complete network.
What silicon photonics actually is
Silicon photonics is an integrated photonics platform. A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) places microscopic optical waveguides and optical functions on a silicon-based chip using processes derived from semiconductor manufacturing. Components such as modulators encode electrical data onto light, while photodetectors convert incoming light back into electrical signals.
A PIC is not, by itself, a complete network product. A working transceiver or optical I/O assembly also needs electronic driver and receiver circuits, signal conditioning, control logic, a light source, packaging, optical coupling and a fibre interface. Some designs integrate laser technology with the photonics platform; others use a separate laser source. The laser and package arrangement is therefore product-specific.

Why silicon is used
Silicon manufacturing can provide repeatable fabrication, dense integration and a route to producing many optical circuits on semiconductor wafers. The optical circuit still has to be coupled to fibres and connected to electronics, so manufacturing scale does not remove assembly or testing challenges.
What it is not
“Silicon photonics” is not a synonym for every optical-network product. It describes an implementation platform. A pluggable module, a co-packaged optical engine and a complete switch are system products that may contain silicon-photonic circuits along with many other technologies.
How a silicon-photonic data-centre link works
- The host creates electrical data. A switch ASIC, network adapter or server interface sends high-speed electrical lanes toward the optical module or engine.
- Driver electronics condition the lanes. They provide the voltage, timing and signal processing needed by the modulator and compensate for losses in the electrical path.
- The optical transmitter encodes the data. A laser supplies light, and modulators vary that light according to the electrical signal. Multiple lanes or wavelengths can carry an aggregate data rate.
- Fibre carries the optical signal. The module couples the light into a fibre connector. Fibre can preserve high-speed links over distances where copper cables or circuit-board traces become difficult to use.
- The receiver converts light back to data. Photodetectors sense the incoming optical signal, and receiver electronics recover, condition and deliver electrical lanes to the host.
Both ends must be compatible. Rate, lane count, wavelength plan, fibre type, connector, reach and management interface all matter. A module that physically fits a cage can still be incompatible with the host port or with the transceiver at the far end.
Where the network benefits come from
Longer practical reach
Optical fibre connects equipment across distances that are challenging for high-speed electrical links. In a data centre, that can mean links between racks, rows or separate equipment areas without using a large bundle of electrically equalised copper. The achievable distance is always the value specified for a particular standard, fibre and module; it is not a universal property of silicon photonics.

Higher bandwidth density
Integrated optical functions, several lanes and, in some architectures, multiple wavelengths allow substantial throughput in a compact module or optical engine. Intel’s product material lists launched 100G, 200G and 400G silicon-photonics transceivers and describes component solutions at 400G, 800G and 1.6Tbps. Those figures describe a vendor portfolio, not a guarantee that every silicon-photonic device supports those rates or that all products are available in every region.
Less high-speed electrical burden
At very high aggregate rates, electrical signals travelling from a switch chip across a package, board and faceplate module require loss compensation and signal processing. Their power and routing requirements increase as rates rise. Placing optical conversion nearer to the switch ASIC shortens this electrical segment. That is the central argument for optical engines and co-packaged optics: more of the distance is travelled as light rather than as difficult, high-speed electrical lanes.
Semiconductor-scale production
Silicon-photonics platforms can use semiconductor fabrication methods to make optical circuits at scale. Intel’s current product page, accessed in 2026, reports more than 8 million silicon-photonics PICs and more than 32 million integrated lasers shipped since 2016. This is Intel’s cumulative vendor-reported shipment figure, not an independently audited total for the industry.

CPO is an architecture or placement choice; silicon photonics is an implementation platform that may be used inside it. They should not be treated as interchangeable terms.
What has actually been demonstrated
On March 5, 2020, Intel announced a demonstration combining a 1.6Tbps silicon-photonics engine with a 12.8Tbps programmable Ethernet switch. The announcement described the work as an early step toward optical I/O. It demonstrates an integration concept, not broad adoption of CPO across current data-centre switches.
“Our co-packaged optics demonstration is the first step to making optical I/O with silicon photonics a reality.” — Intel company statement, March 5, 2020

How to compare a silicon-photonic link with alternatives
Use the following sequence when selecting between a pluggable module, another optical module or a CPO design.
- Define the traffic requirement. Record aggregate throughput, per-lane speed, number of lanes and whether a single high-rate link must split into lower-rate breakout links.
- Set the physical distance. Measure the installed path, include patch-panel routing and check the specified reach and link margin for the exact fibre type.
- Check interfaces end to end. Confirm Ethernet or multi-source-agreement specification, host form factor, connector, wavelength plan, module management and far-end interoperability.
- Budget system power. Include the host SerDes or DSP, laser, driver and receiver electronics, module or optical-engine power, fans and any extra cooling required by the installation.
- Evaluate operations. Decide how technicians will clean and route fibres, inspect diagnostics, stock spares, replace failed modules and access an engine that is integrated into a package.
- Assess integration risk. For an optical engine or CPO design, ask about optical alignment, package yield, production testing, thermal interactions, standards support and the repair path.
The label on the photonic chip is less important than this full system fit. A fair energy or cost comparison must hold rate, reach, fibre, reliability target and service model constant. Silicon photonics does not automatically consume less power or cost less than copper; the host electrical interface, optical source, cooling and network design determine the result.

Engineering and operational limits
Packaging and fibre coupling
Light must move efficiently between the tiny optical circuit and a field fibre. Coupling structures, alignment tolerances and connector assemblies affect insertion loss, manufacturing yield and long-term reliability.

Thermal design
Laser sources, drivers, receivers and host SerDes all produce heat. Higher density can place those heat sources closer together. The module or package therefore needs a thermal path that keeps components within their specified operating conditions while fitting the switch’s airflow and power budget.
Testing and repair
A pluggable module can usually be tested and replaced as a discrete unit. With CPO, optical engines, fibre attachments and the switch package are interdependent. Production test coverage, fault isolation and field repair become more complex, and replacing one failed optical element may require a larger assembly.
Standards and lifecycle
Product availability, firmware support and lifecycle status change by vendor and platform. A current catalogue entry is not a promise that a module will remain available for the entire life of a data-centre build. Specify approved alternatives, diagnostic support and spare coverage before deployment.

Practical deployment checklist
- Identify the exact switch or adapter port and its approved optical modules.
- Match both ends for rate, lane count, wavelength and breakout mode.
- Confirm single-mode or multimode fibre, connector type, polarity and the measured route length.
- Check the module’s specified reach, temperature range, power draw and host cooling capability.
- Validate diagnostics and management support, including how a failing link will be isolated.
- Plan fibre cleaning, bend-radius control, labelling and spare-module storage.
- For CPO or near-package optics, document package replacement, test access, thermal limits and the manufacturer’s service process.
What to remember
Silicon photonics brings optical waveguides, modulators and detectors onto silicon-based integrated circuits and can be paired with electronic chips and laser sources. In current data-centre products it already appears in pluggable transceivers, while co-packaged designs explore moving optical conversion closer to the switch. Its advantages are most credible where the network needs high bandwidth over fibre and where electrical links are becoming difficult to route, equalise or cool.
The decision should be made at system level. Verify the standard, fibre, connector, reach, host compatibility, power, cooling and service model for the exact product. Those details—not the silicon-photonics label alone—determine whether a link delivers a practical improvement.
