SD-WAN is a software-defined way to manage how traffic moves across a wide-area network. Central policies steer application traffic over an overlay that can use underlay connections such as MPLS, broadband internet, LTE, or satellite. It does not require an organization to discard MPLS: MPLS can remain one of the paths beneath the overlay.
What SD-WAN means
Software-defined wide-area networking (SD-WAN) combines centralized network control with policies that influence how traffic travels between locations. The overlay is the logical network and policy layer; the underlay is the collection of physical or provider-supplied connections carrying the packets.
MEF describes SD-WAN in terms of applying policy to IP packets, classifying application flows, and forwarding them over configured underlay connectivity. That provides a useful vendor-neutral model, though detailed features and terminology vary by platform. MEF’s SD-WAN material describes the service concept; check the current standard for normative requirements.

In practical terms, an organization can centrally manage traffic between offices, data centers, and cloud services while using more than one kind of WAN connection. SD-WAN is not itself a circuit type or a guarantee of faster, cheaper, or more secure service.

How SD-WAN works
1. Edge functions connect each site
An SD-WAN edge function is deployed at a location such as a branch office. It connects the site to the underlay and forwards traffic into or out of the overlay. Depending on the platform, the edge may be a physical device or a virtual function.
2. Underlay links carry the packets
The underlying connections may include MPLS, broadband internet, LTE, VSAT, or other available transports. Each link has its own path and characteristics, such as capacity, latency, reliability, and security posture. SD-WAN can operate across these links rather than making them identical.

3. Policies classify traffic and influence its path
The service can identify application flows and apply configured policy to them. For example, an organization might prefer one path for a business-critical application and another for less-sensitive traffic. The actual forwarding behavior depends on the platform’s capabilities, the policy, and the available links; a policy cannot make an underperforming circuit meet a target it cannot support.

4. Central control coordinates configuration and forwarding
Centralized management can provide a way to configure and monitor multiple sites rather than treating every location as an isolated network. The division of management, control, onboarding, and packet forwarding varies among products.

Cisco-specific example: Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN documentation describes Manager for central configuration and monitoring, Controller for control-plane functions, Validator for onboarding and connectivity orchestration, and edge devices for forwarding site traffic. These are Cisco component names and roles, not a required architecture for every SD-WAN implementation. Cisco’s solution overview and getting-started guide explain its implementation.
SD-WAN vs. MPLS: they are not direct alternatives
MPLS is a transport option; SD-WAN is an overlay and policy approach. An SD-WAN deployment may use MPLS alone, or combine it with broadband, cellular, or other connections. The useful comparison is between network designs and their actual operating requirements, not simply between two labels.

| Decision area | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Transport flexibility | A private MPLS connection versus a design that can use MPLS alongside broadband, LTE, or other available links. |
| Application handling | Whether the platform can classify the relevant application traffic and apply policies to its path. |
| Operations | How sites are provisioned, configured, monitored, and changed, including the effort needed to operate the chosen design. |
| Internet and cloud access | How branch traffic reaches SaaS, public cloud environments, and the public internet, and whether the route fits the organization’s security and performance needs. |
| Security | Which authentication, encryption, segmentation, and firewall controls are present, how they are configured, and who is responsible for them. |
| Resilience and cost | Actual circuit costs, service levels, bandwidth, failure behavior, and management costs—not assumed savings based on the SD-WAN label. |
Mixed MPLS and broadband links, transport-independent overlays, application visibility, and cloud connectivity are among the capabilities described in Cisco’s Catalyst SD-WAN design guide. The guide is based on SD-WAN Manager version 20.6 and below, so its details should not be treated as universal or as current support guarantees.
Why organizations use SD-WAN
Organizations with many offices may value one place to manage policies and gain visibility across locations. Where suitable links are available, the design can provide more transport choices and let teams shape forwarding by application. Branches may also use direct internet access or connect to public cloud environments.

Those are design possibilities, not assured outcomes. Whether an SD-WAN deployment improves performance, resilience, or operating costs depends on link quality, topology, application patterns, policy design, provider options, security controls, and the cost of operating the service. The cited architecture sources do not establish a universal savings figure, latency improvement, or uptime level.
Security and deployment limits
SD-WAN does not automatically secure a network. Cisco documents mutual authentication, authorization, encryption, segmentation, and other controls for its own implementation. Those vendor-specific capabilities do not establish that every SD-WAN product includes the same protections or that they are enabled in a given deployment.
- Confirm which security controls the selected platform and service actually provide, and how they are configured.
- Define how segmentation, internet access, and traffic between sites fit the organization’s security architecture.
- Verify product and hardware compatibility, software lifecycle, throughput, licensing, and controller placement for the intended deployment.
- Review current release documentation and support information: product capabilities can vary by platform and software version.
These checks matter whether SD-WAN is deployed with MPLS, internet links, cellular service, or a mix. The underlying transports and the overlay’s security controls are separate parts of the design.
When SD-WAN may be worth considering
It is most relevant when an organization needs to coordinate WAN traffic across multiple sites and wants centralized policy, visibility, or flexibility to use different transport services. Before choosing a design, map the applications and sites, identify the available links and their service levels, and compare operating and security responsibilities along with circuit costs.
A single-site network, a limited set of applications, or a location with few viable transport options may have less to gain from an overlay. The right decision turns on the organization’s topology and requirements—not on a promise that SD-WAN will automatically replace MPLS or reduce costs.
