Samsung Smart Switch is Samsung’s migration app for moving supported content from an old phone or computer backup to a Galaxy phone or tablet. It can bring over contacts, messages, calendars, call history, notes, photos, videos, music and documents, and in some Galaxy-to-Galaxy transfers it can also carry apps, app data, Wi‑Fi settings, alarms and parts of the home-screen setup. It is not a perfect clone: account-synced information, private or encrypted app data, DRM-protected media and some account credentials may still require separate recovery.
What Samsung Smart Switch does
Smart Switch is designed for a supported move to a Galaxy device. You install or open it on the source phone, connect the source and destination directly, or create a backup on a Windows PC or Mac and restore that backup to the Galaxy device. The items offered on the transfer screen depend on the source operating system, the Galaxy model, the software versions and the route you choose.
That distinction matters. A Galaxy phone moving to another Galaxy phone can expose more settings and app data than a different Android phone moving to Galaxy. An iPhone migration has its own list of categories, and an iCloud transfer does not necessarily offer exactly the same choices as a cable transfer. Samsung also says the supported-item list can change according to the connected devices, so treat the selection shown on your own screens as the final authority.

These categories are the most consistent part of an Android transfer, but even here the exact source matters. Contacts stored only on a SIM card, in a social-network account, in a Google account or in a work account may be excluded from particular backup categories. Calendar appointments synchronized with an external calendar account may likewise not be copied as local records. Signing in to the relevant account on the new Galaxy device is often the way those synchronized items reappear.
Apps, settings and layout
Depending on whether the source is another Galaxy device or a different Android phone, Smart Switch may offer apps, app data, email settings, alarms, Wi‑Fi settings, wallpaper, lock-screen and home-screen layout, and other preferences. Samsung distinguishes Galaxy sources from other Android sources because those settings and app-data categories are not universally available across all Android combinations.
An app shown in the transfer list is not a guarantee that its complete state will be restored. The destination may need to download the app again, the app may not exist in the destination store, or the app may require a fresh sign-in. Credentials are not passed to every app, and private app storage cannot be backed up through Smart Switch.

What can be transferred from an iPhone?
Samsung’s iPhone-to-Galaxy options list contacts, schedules and calendars, messages, notes, call history, bookmarks, photos, videos, documents, voice memos, recommended apps, Wi‑Fi settings and alarms. The available categories depend on whether you use a cable or an iCloud route and on the support provided by the two devices.

Music, video and wallpaper limits
Music and video must be DRM-free. Samsung’s US support information says qualifying iTunes music purchased after 2009 can transfer, while older purchases may still be DRM-protected and therefore excluded. DRM-protected music and video are not compatible with Smart Switch.
Native iPhone wallpapers are not transferred through the documented migration path. A personal photo that you used as wallpaper may be included as a photo, but it will not necessarily be restored as the active wallpaper on the Galaxy device.
iCloud versus cable
An iCloud transfer requires internet or mobile-data connectivity. Because the two routes expose different supported categories, check the list Smart Switch presents after you authenticate and connect; do not assume that every item visible in an iPhone backup will be imported.

What a Windows or Mac backup can restore
The Smart Switch desktop utility can back up a source phone and restore selected supported items to a Galaxy phone or tablet. Samsung’s US list includes contacts, schedules, messages, photos and videos, music, call logs, documents and apps. For supported Galaxy sources, the backup may also include app data, home- and lock-screen layout and selected device settings.

A backup file is not the same as a human-readable folder of every phone file. Samsung notes that it can contain information such as messages that cannot be read directly on the computer but can be read after the backup is restored to a phone. Use the desktop application to inspect the categories it offers rather than opening the backup folder and expecting ordinary files.
What Smart Switch does not transfer reliably
Account-synchronized data
Information already synchronized with an online account is not necessarily copied by Smart Switch. Contacts, calendars, mail and similar data may appear only after you add the same account to the Galaxy device and allow it to synchronize. This is different from a locally stored contact or appointment, which may be included when the route supports it.
Private, secure or encrypted app data
Data held in an app’s private storage cannot be backed up by Smart Switch. Samsung’s UK guidance separately warns that secure or encrypted data may not transfer; WhatsApp chats are given as an example. For conversations, authentication tokens, vaults and other irreplaceable records, use the app provider’s own export, cloud-backup or phone-to-phone migration procedure before wiping or trading in the old device.
App credentials and unsupported apps
Smart Switch can list an app without carrying its login session. You may have to download the app again, sign in, approve two-factor authentication and restore content from the app’s own service. An app with no equivalent in the destination store cannot be installed through Smart Switch, and its private data may remain unavailable.

Protected media and selected system features
DRM-protected music and video are excluded. Samsung’s US lists also identify live wallpapers, themes and some email account types as items that cannot be backed up. Those exclusions are separate from ordinary photos, videos and documents, which can still be eligible when stored in supported locations and formats.
Compatibility and preparation
Samsung Ireland currently lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 12.0 or later for phone and tablet support, Windows 10 or later for PC backup and restore, and macOS X 10.13 or later for Mac. These are regional page requirements, not a promise that every model in every country supports every category. Verify the current requirement for your country, Galaxy model and source phone before starting.
- Charge both phones or connect them to power so the transfer is not interrupted.
- Update Smart Switch and the phone software when updates are offered.
- Check that the Galaxy has enough free storage for the categories you select.
- If using a cable, use a compatible, data-capable cable and the right connector or adapter for each port; a charge-only cable will not carry the transfer.
- Keep account passwords and two-factor-authentication methods available for apps that will require a new sign-in.
- For iCloud, confirm that the source account can connect to the internet or mobile data.
- Make a separate backup inside any messaging, password-manager, banking or secure-storage app whose data you cannot afford to lose.
How to transfer directly between phones
Wireless transfer
- Open Smart Switch on the Galaxy destination and on the old phone if the source requires the app.
- Choose the on-screen options that identify one phone as sending data and the Galaxy as receiving it.
- Allow the phones to connect, then review the categories Smart Switch discovers.
- Select only the categories you have room to store and that you have verified as needed.
- Start the transfer and keep both devices near each other and powered until Smart Switch reports completion.
- Open representative contacts, messages, photos, documents and other high-value items on the Galaxy to confirm that they arrived.
USB cable transfer
- Connect the old phone and Galaxy with a compatible data cable or the required adapter.
- Open Smart Switch and accept any USB or device-access prompts on both phones.
- Set the old phone as the source and the Galaxy as the destination using the choices shown on screen.
- Review the offered categories; the cable route can expose a different list from wireless or iCloud.
- Start the copy and do not disconnect the cable until the completion message appears.
- Check the transferred content and complete any account sign-ins or app-specific restores separately.
How to use a PC or Mac backup
- Install Smart Switch for Windows or Mac on the computer and connect the source phone with a data-capable cable.
- In the desktop application, create a backup and wait for it to finish before disconnecting the source phone.
- Connect the Galaxy destination to the same computer.
- Choose the restore function, select the backup and review the categories available for restoration.
- Start the restore and keep the Galaxy connected until the application confirms completion.
- On the Galaxy, inspect messages, contacts, media, documents and app entries, then reinstall or sign in to apps that were not fully restored.
How to check the result and fix common problems
An expected category is missing
Disconnect and reconnect, then compare the source type and route. A category available from a Galaxy source may not be offered from another Android phone, and iCloud and cable routes can differ. Also check whether the missing information is account-synchronized rather than stored locally.
Apps appear but their data is empty
Download the current app version, sign in and use the app’s own restore process. Private or encrypted storage and credentials are common reasons that an app shell transfers without its internal content.

Messages or contacts are incomplete
Check the source accounts, SIM storage and work or social-account locations. Samsung’s listed exclusions mean that some of these records are expected to return through account synchronization instead of Smart Switch. Reconnect the account on the Galaxy and allow synchronization to finish before judging the result.
Photos or videos did not copy
Confirm that the files are stored locally or in a supported location, that the Galaxy has enough free space and that the media is not DRM-protected. Re-run the transfer with only the missing category selected if the first run was interrupted.
The computer backup cannot be opened
That behavior can be normal. A Smart Switch backup is intended to be read by Smart Switch and restored to a phone; some contents, including messages, are not ordinary files that can be browsed on the computer.

- Use direct wireless when both phones are compatible and you want to avoid a computer or cable.
- Use a wired route when you have a suitable data cable and want a direct phone-to-phone connection.
- Use iCloud when the iPhone is available through its account and internet connectivity, while accepting that its category list differs from a cable transfer.
- Use a PC or Mac when you want a retained backup file or need to restore in a separate session.
- Choose the source-specific checklist: Galaxy-to-Galaxy generally exposes the broadest settings and app-data options; other Android and iPhone sources have narrower, route-dependent lists.
- Before declaring the move complete, verify irreplaceable messages, authenticator access, contacts, calendars, photos and documents, then perform each app’s own migration where Smart Switch cannot provide the data.
Smart Switch is therefore best understood as a supported-content migration tool, not a universal image of a phone. It can save substantial setup time, but the transfer screen, the source account configuration and the destination model determine exactly what arrives.
