Samsung Flex Mode lets a compatible Galaxy Z Flip or Fold stay partly folded on a surface, with a supported app in the upper screen area and controls or a Flex mode panel below. It can make hands-free camera use, video calls, and media controls easier—but the layout depends on your phone, software, and app.
What Samsung Flex Mode does
Flex Mode uses the hinge and foldable display of a Galaxy Z phone to hold the device partially open while an app is running. In compatible apps, the screen can adapt to the folded position: content appears above, while controls or a panel appear below. You can prop the phone on a steady, flat surface or hold it upright; a separate stand is not required for the examples Samsung describes.

How to use Flex Mode with an app
- Open an app that supports Flex Mode.

- Use the app in the upper area and any available controls or panel in the lower area.
- Unfold the phone or use the panel’s close control to leave the Flex Mode layout.
Samsung lists hands-free camera use, viewing recent photos, video calls, and navigation with a touchpad on supported newer devices as examples. The available controls vary with the phone and app.
Which apps and phones support it?
Flex Mode is a Galaxy Z foldable feature, not a general Android feature available on any Samsung phone. App support is not universal: some apps have custom layouts, some may not support the Flex panel, and support for related features such as Multi Active Window, App Pair, or App continuity can also vary.

Samsung’s US support page contains conflicting compatibility information: it lists a Z Fold8 among compatible models while also stating that Flex Mode is not supported on the Z Fold8. The page also says the feature is not supported on the Galaxy Z TriFold. Because of that inconsistency, the page does not establish a reliable blanket compatibility claim for those models. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Flex Mode and multitasking are different features
Flex Mode changes how a supported app and its controls appear when the phone is partly folded. Multi window is Samsung’s separate feature for using apps in split-screen or pop-up views. Samsung says certain Galaxy Z Fold models can handle up to five apps at once; that maximum should not be assumed for every Galaxy Z phone.
Quick Recap
What to keep in mind
- It relies on foldable hardware: you need a compatible Galaxy Z Flip or Fold; a conventional Galaxy phone cannot use Flex Mode.
- Behavior varies: the device model, software, region, and app determine whether the panel appears and what controls are available.
- Generation claims need care: Samsung Newsroom said the Galaxy Z series had reached its 7th generation in an article dated July 17, 2026. That is Samsung’s product-history statement, not an independent measure of Flex Mode adoption, satisfaction, or durability. Samsung Newsroom: How Do Foldable Phones Work?
