Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration is the expanded 2016 edition of Rise of the Tomb Raider. It bundles the main game with its Season Pass content, including the Blood Ties story chapter, Lara’s Nightmare combat mode, co-op Endurance, extra difficulty, costumes, weapons and previously released downloadable content. It is not the separate game Tomb Raider: Anniversary.
Identify the edition correctly
The product commonly described as “Tomb Raider: The 20th Anniversary Edition” is officially titled Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration. The name refers to the franchise’s twentieth anniversary, while the game itself is the expanded edition of Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara Croft’s 2015 action-adventure sequel.
This distinction matters when searching a digital store or a physical listing. Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a different game: a remake of the original Tomb Raider. Searching for “20th Anniversary” without the word “Rise” can therefore produce the wrong product.

What does 20 Year Celebration include?
The edition combines the complete campaign with major expansions, side modes, new challenge options and anniversary-themed cosmetics. The official product description presents it as a bundle of the base game and Season Pass rather than as a separate story unrelated to Rise of the Tomb Raider.

The full Rise of the Tomb Raider campaign
You receive the main single-player game, including Lara’s expedition through Siberia, its exploration areas, combat encounters, tombs and campaign progression. The additional content is accessed from within the same game package rather than requiring a separate standalone title.
Blood Ties
Blood Ties is a story-focused chapter set in Croft Manor. Lara searches her childhood home and investigates a mystery involving the Croft family. The chapter is primarily exploration and discovery, giving the manor a larger role than it has in the main campaign.
On PlayStation, Blood Ties is also the part of the package specifically identified as supporting PlayStation VR. VR changes how you explore the manor; it does not turn the entire main campaign into a VR game.

Lara’s Nightmare uses Croft Manor as the setting for a combat mode in which Lara fights an invasion of undead enemies. It is designed around repeated combat runs and challenge-oriented play rather than a conventional narrative chapter. Feral Interactive’s Steam FAQ describes the objective as defending Croft Manor from zombie hordes.

Co-op Endurance
Endurance is an extreme-survival mode in which players manage threats and environmental conditions while trying to stay alive. The 20 Year Celebration package adds an online co-operative version, allowing two players to tackle the mode together. Its focus is different from the campaign: survival decisions, hazards and resource management are central to the experience.
Extreme Survivor difficulty
The edition adds Extreme Survivor as a difficulty option for the main campaign. It is intended for players who want a harsher version of the normal survival and combat systems. Because it changes campaign difficulty rather than adding a separate story, it is best viewed as a replay option for experienced players.
Anniversary outfits, weapon and classic Lara skins
The cosmetic additions include a Tomb Raider III-inspired outfit and weapon. The bundle also contains five classic Lara skins, allowing players to replace Lara’s standard appearance with looks drawn from earlier eras of the franchise. These items affect appearance and, where specified, equipment presentation; they do not replace the campaign’s story.

The official description says the edition includes the Season Pass and previously released downloadable content. Named expansions include Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch and Cold Darkness Awakened, in addition to Blood Ties and Lara’s Nightmare.

“All previously released downloadable content” is the wording used by the PlayStation Store listing. That establishes the scope of the advertised bundle, but a current store page should still be checked for the platform, region and exact product name you are buying. The available descriptions do not establish that every historical physical package or every current storefront uses identical packaging.
PlayStation VR support and PS5 compatibility
What VR actually covers
The PlayStation listing specifies PSVR support for Blood Ties. It does not advertise the full Rise of the Tomb Raider campaign as playable in VR. To use the VR features on the original PlayStation setup, you need a PlayStation VR headset and a PlayStation Camera.
Using the PS4 edition on PS5
The PlayStation Store listing says the PS4 game is playable on PS5, while warning that some PS4 features may be absent. Its PS5 VR note calls for a PlayStation Camera adaptor and recommends a DUALSHOCK 4 controller for the best PSVR experience. Those requirements apply to PlayStation’s backward-compatibility and VR arrangements, not to Xbox or Steam versions.
- PS4: Blood Ties VR requires the listed PSVR headset and PlayStation Camera.
- PS5 without VR: The PS4 game can be played on PS5, subject to the storefront’s feature-availability warning.
- PS5 with PSVR: The PlayStation Camera adaptor and a DUALSHOCK 4 are recommended for the VR setup described by the listing.
Platform versions and what to verify
The official Tomb Raider page provides purchase paths for PlayStation, Xbox and Steam. The PlayStation Store entry is specifically a PS4 product released on October 11, 2016. Feral Interactive’s Steam FAQ confirms that the Steam edition includes content such as Blood Ties, Lara’s Nightmare and Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch.

These sources confirm the platforms and named content, but they do not establish that every platform currently sells the same bundle, that every physical edition contains identical inserts or discs, or that the product remains in stock at a particular retailer.
How much gameplay does it provide?
The PlayStation Store advertises over 50 hours of gameplay. That is a promotional figure from the storefront, accessed in 2026, rather than a guaranteed completion time. Your total will depend on difficulty, exploration, optional tombs, challenge modes, downloadable chapters and whether you replay Endurance or Lara’s Nightmare.
The same listing advertises more than 85 award nominations. This is a count presented by the PlayStation Store, not a statement that the game won that number of awards. Keep the distinction in mind when comparing the edition’s marketing claims with independently verified accolades.

Use the complete name when searching: “Rise of the Tomb Raider 20 Year Celebration”. For a PlayStation search, adding “PS4” narrows the result. If you are looking for a disc, “20 Year Celebration physical copy” identifies the edition you need to verify, but the contents of a particular physical package are not established by the product descriptions above.

- Read the full title. Confirm that it says Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration, not Tomb Raider: Anniversary.
- Confirm the platform. Check for PS4, Xbox or Steam branding before paying; a digital license normally applies only to the listed platform ecosystem.
- Check the included-content wording. Look for the base game, Season Pass or the named expansions and modes.
- For PlayStation VR, verify hardware. Blood Ties is the specified VR content, and the headset, Camera and, on PS5, the adaptor and recommended controller have separate requirements.
- Review the current storefront page. Prices, stock, regional availability and compatibility can change, and the available product descriptions do not establish today’s retail conditions.
Who should choose 20 Year Celebration?
New players
For someone who has never played Rise of the Tomb Raider, this is the most complete single-package option described by the official listings. It starts with the campaign and adds the story, challenge and cosmetic content afterward, so there is no need to decide which individual expansion to purchase first.
Returning players
If you already own the base game, the value depends on which Season Pass items you have. Blood Ties, Lara’s Nightmare, co-op Endurance, Extreme Survivor and the classic skins are the additions most clearly associated with this edition. Compare your existing downloadable content with the store listing before buying a second copy.
VR owners
Choose this edition for the Blood Ties VR option only if you have the required PlayStation hardware. The VR feature is a focused manor chapter, not a conversion of the entire campaign, so it should not be treated as a full-game VR release.

Why the edition was promoted as a celebration
In a PlayStation Blog announcement dated July 19, 2016, Scot Amos, identified there as Co-head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics, wrote: “A mere ‘Game of the Year’ wouldn’t satisfy us or our fans.” The 20 Year Celebration package reflects that ambition by combining the base game, Season Pass expansions, challenge modes, co-op survival and cosmetics inspired by earlier Lara Croft games.
Bottom line for shoppers
When a listing says Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration, expect the main game plus Season Pass content: Blood Ties, Lara’s Nightmare, co-op Endurance, Extreme Survivor, Baba Yaga, Cold Darkness Awakened and anniversary-themed outfits, weapons and skins. Verify the platform and current listing, and remember that PlayStation VR applies specifically to Blood Ties with the required hardware.
