Ripasso is a Rust password manager for an existing pass-format directory: passwords are kept in PGP-encrypted files, and Git storage is optional. The project describes it as “A simple password manager written in Rust.” It offers a terminal interface and a GTK graphical interface, but the project says GTK has not yet reached feature parity with the terminal version.
How Ripasso stores passwords
Ripasso is designed to access and decrypt passwords in the pass directory format, rather than requiring a service-hosted vault. Entries are PGP-encrypted files organized in directories. A Git repository can be used to track the store, but Git storage is optional; the documentation does not describe it as cloud synchronization.
The crate documentation lists GPGme or Sequoia for encryption and libgit2 for Git integration. It also documents a password-generation module that uses the EFF long word list. That identifies an input to password generation, not a benchmark or guarantee about the strength of generated passwords. See the Ripasso crate documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich Ripasso interface should you use?
Cursive terminal interface
The project README describes the Cursive terminal interface as the more complete option. It documents password-age display and password editing. The Debian testing manual for ripasso-cursive also describes creating and deleting entries, renaming an entry without changing its contents, and copying a selected password to the clipboard for 40 seconds. If an entry contains an otpauth:// URL, the manual documents generating a code from it. These are terminal-app manual details, not confirmation that every feature exists in the GTK interface or every release.

GTK graphical interface

Installation routes documented by the project
The README lists package-manager routes for several systems. Package names and repository availability can change, so check the current instructions for your distribution before installing.

For Home Manager users, its manual exposes programs.ripasso.enable, with a package option defaulting to pkgs.ripasso-cursive. The settings path is XDG_CONFIG_HOME/ripasso/settings.toml; the manual’s example includes a store path and pgp_implementation = "gpg". This is Home Manager configuration guidance, not a universal installation method. See the Home Manager option documentation.
What the documented security model does—and does not—establish
The project documents PGP-encrypted password files, GPGme or Sequoia encryption options, and optional Git storage. Those describe the software’s design and integrations. They do not establish that Ripasso has undergone an independent security audit, is free of vulnerabilities, or suits every threat model. The cited documentation also does not establish current vulnerability status or compatibility with a particular OpenPGP hardware token or smart card.
