Reflection AI is a research lab and AI company founded in 2024. Its strategy is to build open-weight models, publish research and technical reports, and release software that customers can inspect, customize and deploy under their own control. Its first announced model, Beam, is a large sparse mixture-of-experts system aimed at coding, reasoning and agentic workloads.
Reflection is not established as the best AI lab overall. Reflection’s public materials show a different operating model from closed-model providers: more access to model artifacts and more deployment flexibility, balanced by greater responsibility for serving, security and safety. Beam’s published results are mixed by task, so a meaningful comparison depends on the workload, model version, deployment constraints and evaluation method.
What Reflection AI is
A 2024-founded AI lab
Sequoia Capital identifies Reflection AI as a company founded in 2024 and lists Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou on its team profile. Reflection describes its mission as making intelligence open and accessible. That mission is expressed through model development, research publication and software releases rather than through a single chatbot product.

The company says its deployment scope can extend from private cloud to on-premises, air-gapped and edge environments. Those are company descriptions; an organization considering a deployment should confirm current products, supported hardware, service levels and geographic availability directly with Reflection.

What “open intelligence” means here
Reflection frames its approach around three commitments:
- Release model weights so users can inspect, adapt and run the models rather than accessing them only through a hosted interface.
- Publish research and technical reports describing how models are built and evaluated.
- Open-source software, including reinforcement-learning tools and environments, so more of the development stack can be examined and modified.
These commitments are the company’s stated beliefs, not independently proven outcomes. Open weights can improve auditability and customization, but they do not automatically make a model safe, inexpensive or easy to operate. The organization running an open model still has to handle infrastructure, access control, monitoring, updates and abuse prevention.
Beam: Reflection’s first announced model
Architecture and headline specifications
On October 5, 2026, Reflection announced Beam as its first open-weight model. It describes Beam as a sparse mixture-of-experts (MoE) model. An MoE model contains many parameter groups but activates only a portion for each token, which can reduce the computation required for an individual request compared with a dense model of similar total size.
| Specification | What Reflection reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Total parameters | 501 billion | The full parameter count across the sparse model; it is not the amount used for every token. |
| Active parameters | 23 billion | The number Reflection says is active during inference for a token or step; actual serving requirements depend on the implementation and context length. |
| Pretraining data volume | 23.8 trillion tokens | A company-reported training figure, not a guarantee of quality or domain coverage. |
| Reinforcement-learning activity | More than 100 million rollouts | Reflection says these were generated during a run using 10,500 NVIDIA GB300 GPUs over four weeks. |
| Primary targets | Coding, reasoning and agentic workloads | These are the use cases Reflection names; they do not establish equal performance across every task. |
The rollout and GPU figures describe a particular training run, not the hardware a customer necessarily needs to serve Beam. An enterprise planning deployment should request concrete memory, interconnect, quantization, context-window and throughput requirements for the intended model artifact.
Modalities and intended use
The launch post describes Beam as text-only. It can work with information from other modalities when that information has first been represented as text, but the announced model is not presented as a native image, audio or video model. Its stated focus on code, reasoning and agentic work makes it more relevant to software development, technical analysis and tool-using workflows than to general-purpose multimodal applications.
Release timing and licensing caveats
At the time of the October 5 announcement, Reflection said it was completing red-team work and evaluations and planned to release weights, a technical report, a model card and developer artifacts later in October 2026. The same announcement described Apache 2.0 as the planned license for the weights. Because October 15, 2026 is still before the stated release window ends, readers should check the actual release artifacts before relying on the license, safety documentation, supported runtimes or download availability.

What the published Beam evaluations show
Results are task-specific, not a universal ranking
Reflection’s October 8 benchmark update reports strong results on some coding evaluations, while competing models lead on other coding, reasoning, search and tool-use tests. Axios’s October 6 coverage likewise characterized Beam’s comparison with Chinese open-weight model families as mixed: Beam won or approximately matched some tests and lost others.
The evidence therefore supports a workload-by-workload conclusion, not a claim that Beam is categorically better than other labs’ models. Benchmark names, versions, prompts, tool configurations, sampling settings and scoring rules can materially change the outcome. A score from one category should not be generalized to another.
| Evaluation question | What is established | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Coding | Reflection reports that Beam performs well on some coding tests. | No published result establishes that it leads every coding benchmark or every software stack. |
| Reasoning | Reflection targets reasoning and reports comparisons with other models. | Performance depends on the exact benchmark, prompting and model versions. |
| Search and tool use | Other models lead some search and tool-use evaluations in Reflection’s update. | Results may change with tool wrappers, retrieval indexes and agent scaffolding. |
| Independent replication | Axios provides contemporaneous reporting on the mixed picture. | Axios’s report does not establish independent replication of Reflection’s complete evaluation suite. |
How to read the efficiency claim
Reflection says Beam can reach reasoning performance comparable to GLM-5.2 while using three to four times less inference compute. This is a company claim. Reflection’s post describes compute estimates rather than measured serving costs, so the statement should not be treated as a guaranteed three-to-four-times reduction in an organization’s bill.
Actual cost depends on context length, concurrency, latency targets, batching, quantization, accelerator prices, utilization, networking and the amount of work an agent performs around each model call. A smaller active-parameter count can help, but it does not by itself determine total cost or operational complexity.
How Reflection compares with other AI labs
Access and control
Reflection’s differentiator is intended access to model weights and software. A team can potentially inspect the artifacts, fine-tune or otherwise adapt them, and run inference in an environment it controls. Closed-model providers generally expose capabilities through a hosted API or application without publishing the underlying weights. That can simplify operations, but it limits direct inspection and modification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“Open” also has boundaries. A release may include weights but not every training dataset, filtering rule, reinforcement-learning environment or internal evaluation. Before adopting a model, check exactly which weights, code, documentation and licenses are available.

Deployment and data control
Reflection says it supports an API and customer-managed deployments that can include private cloud, on-premises, air-gapped and edge settings. These options may matter when data cannot leave a controlled network, when connectivity is intermittent, or when an organization needs continuity independent of a public service.
A hosted closed-model API can be faster to start because the provider operates the hardware and serving layer. A self-managed open deployment shifts those tasks to the customer. Compare the options on data residency, network isolation, incident response, patching, capacity planning, observability and support rather than on the word “open” alone.
Capability by workload
Beam is aimed at coding, reasoning and agentic workloads, while other labs may emphasize different combinations of general conversation, multimodal understanding, long-context work, coding or tool use. The relevant question is not which lab has the highest reputation; it is which model produces acceptable results on the tasks, languages, repositories, tools and latency targets your team actually uses.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Published Beam comparisons include Mistral, GLM, Qwen, Kimi and DeepSeek model families, as well as closed-model providers OpenAI and Anthropic. The named reports do not constitute a comprehensive, independently controlled ranking of all those labs. Treat the named comparisons as dated evidence for particular tests, not as a league table.
Inference economics
Open weights can let a buyer choose hardware, serving software and optimization methods. That flexibility may reduce per-request costs at scale or make an unusual deployment possible. It can also create capital expenditure, engineering work and utilization risk.
With a closed API, the provider absorbs most accelerator and serving decisions, and the customer typically pays according to a published usage metric. The trade-off is less control over model placement, weight-level customization and provider-side changes. A fair cost comparison should include engineering and compliance work, not just token prices.

Safety and downstream control
Reflection publishes an open safety framework describing its current governance and risk approach. That framework is evidence of a documented process, not proof of real-world safety performance.
Open weights make external inspection and independent testing easier. They also make it easier for a downstream operator to alter or remove safeguards. Axios highlighted this as a trade-off. A company deploying an open model must decide which controls are enforced in the model, which are enforced in the serving layer and which are enforced in applications, identity systems and human review.
| Comparison axis | Reflection’s stated approach | Typical closed-model approach | Decision implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model access | Open-weight releases are a core goal. | Access is primarily through a provider-operated service. | Choose between inspectability and customization versus simpler managed access. |
| Deployment | API plus customer-controlled environments, including on-premises and air-gapped options. | Usually provider-hosted, subject to that provider’s infrastructure and policy. | Evaluate residency, isolation, continuity and operating responsibility. |
| Performance | Beam targets coding, reasoning and agents; published results vary by test. | Performance also varies by model and task. | Run representative evaluations instead of relying on a single headline score. |
| Serving economics | Potential to optimize hardware and software directly; efficiency claims are company estimates. | Provider manages serving; customer pays for usage or subscription. | Include labor, hardware, utilization and support in total cost. |
| Safety control | External inspection is possible, but downstream operators can modify safeguards. | Provider controls the deployed model and policy layer. | Assign responsibility for abuse prevention, monitoring and updates explicitly. |
Deployment choices and due diligence
Hosted API
An API is the lowest-friction way to test a model. Confirm authentication, rate limits, data retention, regional processing, logging, model-version policy, tool-calling support and service commitments. Do not assume that an open-weight model offered through an API gives the customer access to the weights or the same control as a self-hosted release.
Private cloud or on-premises
A customer-managed deployment can keep prompts, source code and retrieved documents inside a controlled environment. It requires accelerator capacity, high-speed interconnects where applicable, storage for model artifacts, a serving runtime, monitoring and a process for applying model and security updates.
Air-gapped or edge operation
Air-gapped and edge scenarios add constraints around artifact transfer, patch approval, physical security, telemetry and incident response. Verify that the exact Beam release, runtime and support model work without continuous external connectivity. “Air-gapped” should describe a tested architecture, not merely a marketing option.

Government and sovereign-AI activity
Reflection identifies model provision for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission and a sovereign AI cloud being built in South Korea. Axios reported in May 2026 that Reflection would provide customizable models for DOE research and use DOE compute as Genesis Mission projects deploy.
These relationships are signals of institutional activity. They are not, by themselves, evidence of comparative benchmark superiority, broad production adoption or a particular deployment outcome. Check the current status, scope and contractual terms before treating them as available programs.
Historical funding context
Reflection’s August 2025 blog said the company had raised $2 billion by that date and named investors including Sequoia, Lightspeed, CRV and NVIDIA. That is a dated company statement, not a current total. Funding can indicate investor support and available resources, but it does not measure model quality, reliability or customer value.
How to evaluate Reflection against alternatives
Use a controlled evaluation that reflects the work your organization needs to perform:
- Define the workload. Assemble representative coding tasks, reasoning questions, documents, tools, languages and failure-sensitive cases. Specify acceptable accuracy, latency, context length and human-review requirements.
- Freeze the versions. Record the exact model artifact, checkpoint, API version, system prompt, tokenizer, serving runtime and quantization. A comparison is not reproducible if those details change between tests.
- Measure quality and failure modes. Score correct outputs, incomplete work, hallucinations, unsafe tool calls, refusal behavior and recovery after an error. For agents, measure the whole workflow rather than one model response.
- Measure operations. Record time to first token, sustained throughput, peak concurrency, memory use, crash rate and maintenance effort under your expected load.
- Calculate total cost. Include accelerators, storage, networking, electricity or cloud rental, engineering, monitoring, support, security review and the cost of human corrections. Compare those figures with the complete price of a hosted alternative.
- Review governance. Map who can access weights, prompts, logs and tools; how updates are approved; how incidents are reported; and how a compromised or misbehaving deployment is isolated.
- Pilot with real data under controls. Start with a limited group, redact sensitive information where possible, keep audit logs and define a rollback path. Expand only after the measured results meet the agreed thresholds.
Who is most likely to benefit from Reflection
Potentially strong fit
- Engineering teams that need to inspect or customize model behavior.
- Organizations that must keep inference inside private, on-premises or disconnected environments.
- Researchers studying training, reinforcement learning or model behavior with access to artifacts.
- Teams whose main workloads are coding, technical reasoning or tool-using agents and who can run a proper pilot.
Potentially weaker fit
- Small teams that want a ready-to-use assistant with no model-serving operations.
- Applications requiring native image, audio or video understanding from the announced text-only Beam release.
- Workloads where the provider must carry all safety, capacity and update responsibilities.
- Projects that cannot tolerate uncertainty about release timing, final license terms or hardware support.
Bottom line
Reflection AI’s significance is its open-weight strategy, not a proven universal lead in model performance. Beam brings a substantial, sparse model focused on coding, reasoning and agentic work, with company-reported figures of 501 billion total parameters, 23 billion active parameters and 23.8 trillion pretraining tokens. Its published comparisons are mixed, and its claimed inference-efficiency advantage remains an estimate that customers should test themselves.
Choose Reflection when inspectability, customization or deployment control justify the added operational and safety responsibility. Choose a closed provider when managed serving, simpler procurement and provider-operated safeguards matter more. In either case, make the decision with workload-specific tests and a current review of the actual Beam release, documentation and support terms.
