Ransomware threat hunting is a proactive, evidence-led search for attacker activity that happened before ransomware was deployed or continued after it was detected. It treats encryption as one event in a potentially longer intrusion. A sound hunt examines identity, endpoint, network and cloud evidence, while following the incident-response plan, preserving evidence and preventing reinfection before systems are restored.

Why a ransomware alert is not the whole incident

Ransomware commonly appears at the end of an intrusion rather than at its beginning. Attackers may first steal credentials, create persistence, move between systems, disable recovery controls, and copy data. Encryption can therefore be evidence that an earlier compromise was never removed.

The joint #StopRansomware Guide from CISA, MS-ISAC, NSA and the FBI states: “A ransomware infection may be evidence of a previous, unresolved network compromise.” In practical terms, responders should ask two questions at the same time: which systems are encrypted, and what access allowed the attacker to reach them?

CISA describes cyber threat hunt assessments as proactive searches for threats that bypassed defenses and established a foothold. In a ransomware case, hunting is the work of finding that foothold, tracing the attacker’s actions and checking whether access remains. It is not a replacement for containment, eradication or recovery.

When to conduct a ransomware hunt

Before an incident

Routine hunts can identify weak signals before an encryption event: unusual privileged logins, new administrative accounts, unexpected remote tools, suspicious PowerShell use or data transfers. This is the least disruptive time to improve logging, test detections and document who can isolate systems.

Immediately after an alert

Once ransomware is suspected, begin a focused hunt while the response team contains the event. Determine the initial scope, look for precursor malware and identify accounts or tools that could be used to spread the intrusion. Do not wait for every encrypted device to be catalogued before checking for continuing access.

During containment and recovery

Hunt across systems that are not yet visibly affected, backup infrastructure, identity services and cloud control planes. Continue looking for persistence and exfiltration while restoration priorities are decided. A clean-looking workstation is not proof that its credentials or network paths are safe.

How hunting fits the incident-response process

  1. Activate the approved plan. Assign incident command, technical leads, legal or privacy contacts and communications responsibilities according to your organization’s incident-response plan.
  2. Identify and isolate impacted systems. Use network controls, endpoint isolation and account disablement where appropriate. Record what was isolated, when and by whom so later evidence remains interpretable.
  3. Preserve useful evidence. Capture volatile information when possible, including active processes, network connections, logged-on users and memory. Preserve relevant endpoint, identity, network, cloud and security-tool logs before retention windows overwrite them.
  4. Define restoration priorities. Triage systems by business importance and dependency, but do not restore them solely because their files are available. Restoration should follow a finding that precursor malware and continuing access have been addressed.
  5. Run the hunt across evidence domains. Search for the behaviors listed in the next sections, pivoting from one finding to related accounts, hosts, time periods and destinations.
  6. Contain, eradicate and validate. Remove persistence, reset compromised credentials, close unauthorized access paths and test detections against the behaviors you found.
  7. Restore with monitoring. Bring systems back in a controlled order while watching for the same account, process, network and cloud activity that revealed the intrusion.

What to look for in each evidence domain

Domain Evidence to review Questions to answer
Identity and access Directory changes, privileged activity, VPN and other authentication logs Were accounts created or elevated? Did a legitimate account log in from an unusual place or time? Were credentials dumped?
Endpoint and recovery Process execution, services, scheduled tasks, software inventory, backup and boot-control changes Did someone disable recovery, deploy remote tooling or establish persistence?
Network and exfiltration Internal connection records, DNS and proxy data, firewall flows and outbound volume Did hosts communicate unexpectedly, and was data moved to an unusual destination?
Cloud IAM, network-security and data-protection audit trails Were permissions, firewall rules or storage protections changed before the incident?

Identity and access hunts

Start with directory and authentication changes around the earliest known suspicious activity, then work backward if timestamps are uncertain.

  • List newly created Active Directory accounts and determine who approved each one.
  • Review accounts that received elevated privileges, recent privileged-account activity and changes to group membership.
  • Investigate anomalous VPN and other suspicious logins, including impossible travel, unusual source networks or access outside a user’s normal pattern.
  • Search for Active Directory enumeration and credential-dumping activity. CISA specifically names tools such as Mimikatz and NTDSutil.exe as examples that warrant investigation; their presence is a lead, not proof by itself.
  • Pivot every suspicious account to the hosts it accessed, commands it ran and files it touched. A compromised administrator account can explain activity on many otherwise unrelated endpoints.

Endpoint and recovery-control hunts

Ransomware operators often try to make recovery harder before encrypting data. Examine command lines, parent-child process relationships and execution times, not just the executable name.

Recovery and boot tampering

Investigate anomalous use of bcdedit.exe, fsutil.exe with deletejournal, vssadmin.exe, wbadmin.exe and wmic.exe with shadowcopy or shadowstorage. Correlate each command with the initiating account, host, parent process and nearby authentication events.

Execution and persistence

  • Review unexpected PowerShell and PsTools activity, including encoded or remotely launched commands where your telemetry records them.
  • Find newly created services and scheduled tasks, then identify their binaries, run-as accounts and creation times.
  • Check for unexpected software, portable executables and remote-monitoring or management tools. CISA also calls out unexpected Cobalt Strike activity as a lead to investigate.
  • Compare endpoint findings with antivirus and EDR alerts. A missing alert does not establish that a process was benign; it may indicate a telemetry or detection gap.

Network and data-exfiltration hunts

Map communications before and after the first encryption alert. Unexpected endpoint-to-endpoint traffic, especially traffic involving servers, can reveal lateral movement or command-and-control staging.

  • Identify new or rare internal connections and determine whether the initiating process and account were expected.
  • Measure outbound data volume against the host’s normal pattern and business role. Large transfers before encryption may indicate theft as well as preparation for extortion.
  • Investigate use of Rclone, Rsync, web-storage services and FTP or SFTP when they are not part of an approved workflow.
  • Consider tunneling behavior such as Chisel over HTTPS port 443 and Cloudflared tunnels. Because these channels can resemble normal encrypted web traffic, combine flow data with process, DNS, proxy and identity evidence.

Cloud control-plane hunts

Cloud resources can be changed without touching a traditional endpoint. Review audit trails for unexpected modifications to identity and access management, network-security controls and data-protection resources.

Pay particular attention to a new firewall rule that allows open traffic, changes that weaken storage protections, newly granted roles and disabled logging. CISA recommends automating detection and response for risky configuration changes where the platform supports it. Preserve the before-and-after configuration and the identity that made the change.

Which tools and data help?

No single product replaces an incident process. Choose capabilities according to the evidence you must collect and the actions your team can take.

Capability Useful contribution Important limitation
Antivirus Malware detections, quarantine records and historical alerts May miss fileless activity, novel tools or events outside its retention period.
Endpoint detection and response Process trees, command lines, host isolation and broader endpoint investigation Coverage depends on supported assets, sensor health, licensing and retention.
Intrusion-detection systems Network indicators, suspicious command-and-control patterns and lateral-traffic clues Encrypted traffic and limited network visibility can reduce context.
Centralized logs Cross-domain correlation for identity, endpoint, network and cloud events Gaps in collection, clock differences and short retention can obscure timelines.
Velociraptor CISA describes it as a capability for collecting and examining artifacts across a network, running targeted hunts, analyzing files and pulling samples. It still requires trained responders, suitable access and a plan for handling collected data; CISA does not endorse it or any commercial product.

Application allowlisting and EDR are among the prevention and investigation controls CISA discusses for supported assets. IDS can help identify command-and-control activity before deployment. The useful question is not whether a tool is present, but whether it retained the evidence needed to answer who acted, where, when and how.

Use behavior-based hypotheses, not isolated indicators

A filename, IP address or tool name can change quickly and may be legitimate in context. Build hypotheses around behaviors: credential dumping followed by privileged logins, recovery tampering followed by remote execution, or unusual data movement followed by encryption.

Common failure modes and how to recover

Logs are missing or too short-lived

Record the gap as a finding, preserve whatever remains on hosts and downstream systems, and prioritize retention and clock synchronization before the next incident. Do not infer that an action did not occur simply because its central log is absent.

Everything is treated as a false positive

Validate context: owner, business purpose, parent process, account, time and neighboring events. Approved administration can still be abused through a compromised account, while a rare tool may be legitimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Encrypted systems are restored too quickly

Pause restoration when the access path is unknown. Recheck identity, persistence, recovery-tampering and network findings, reset credentials as required, and monitor restored systems for the same behaviors.

Cloud activity is overlooked

Include cloud audit logs and configuration history in the incident timeline. An unchanged endpoint does not rule out a cloud permission or firewall change that enabled the intrusion.

Evidence handling creates new risk

Limit collection to authorized responders, document chain of custody where required, protect copied data and coordinate with legal, privacy and regulatory teams before sharing sensitive material.

A practical hunt worksheet

For each lead, capture the host or cloud resource, account, timestamp in a consistent time zone, observed behavior, supporting evidence, confidence, containment action and next pivot. Mark whether the item is confirmed malicious, suspicious pending validation or explained by an approved activity. This makes the hunt auditable and gives recovery teams a concrete list of conditions to satisfy before reconnecting systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The outcome should be more than a list of indicators. It should explain the intrusion path, identify remaining access, show which evidence supports each conclusion and record which controls were tested or tuned. That is how threat hunting turns a ransomware alert into a defensible containment and recovery decision.
