Quantum interference is what happens when probability amplitudes for different possible paths to the same outcome are added together before a probability is calculated. The amplitudes can reinforce one another, making an outcome more likely, or cancel one another, making it less likely. In the famous double-slit experiment, that rule produces a pattern of bright and dark fringes even when particles are detected one at a time.
The effect is not caused by particles bumping into one another, and it does not require a conscious observer. It comes from how quantum alternatives combine and from whether a physical measurement makes those alternatives distinguishable.
The core idea: add amplitudes first, then calculate probability
In ordinary probability, mutually exclusive routes are often treated by adding their probabilities. Quantum mechanics uses a different sequence. Each alternative is represented by a probability amplitude, which carries both a magnitude and a phase. The amplitudes are added while the alternatives remain indistinguishable; only afterward is the absolute square taken to obtain a measurable probability.

Depending on the relative phase of the amplitudes, it can increase or decrease the final probability.

Constructive interference
When the alternatives arrive with matching phase, their contributions reinforce one another. This is called constructive interference. In a wave analogy, it is like crest meeting crest or trough meeting trough, producing a larger combined wave. A detector is then more likely to register an event in that region.
Destructive interference
When the alternatives have opposing phase, they cancel partly or completely. This is destructive interference. The wave analogy is crest meeting trough. A location that would have received events from either alternative alone can become unusually unlikely, or even have zero probability in an idealized arrangement.
The analogy is useful for visualizing reinforcement and cancellation, but the quantum statement is more precise: it is the amplitudes, not ordinary material waves, that are combined.

The double-slit arrangement makes the amplitude rule visible without requiring advanced equipment in the explanation. It contains a source, a barrier with two narrow openings, and a detection screen behind the barrier.
1. The source sends quanta toward the barrier
An experiment can use light, electrons, or other quantum objects. The source is adjusted so that individual quanta can be emitted and detected separately. Each detection appears as a localized spot on the screen, not as a broad smear.
2. The two openings provide alternatives
With both slits open and no apparatus identifying the route, there are two indistinguishable alternatives for reaching a point on the screen: through slit 1 or through slit 2. Each route contributes an amplitude to that point.

3. The amplitudes combine
At some screen positions the two amplitudes are in phase and reinforce. At others they are out of phase and cancel. The probability therefore varies across the screen.

4. Repeated detections reveal the distribution
The screen records one localized event at a time. After many emissions, the spots accumulate into alternating regions of high and low count: the interference pattern. The pattern is a property of the distribution of many possible detection events, even though each event is individual.
The Institute of Physics emphasizes this distinction between a single detection and the accumulated pattern. Nothing in the effect requires one electron to collide with another electron. The pattern follows from the combination of quantum alternatives and the probabilities those combinations predict.
What the two-slit cases show
| Experimental condition | Path information | What the screen records | Interference fringes? |
|---|---|---|---|
| One slit open | There is only one available slit route | A single-slit distribution | No two-path interference pattern |
| Both slits open, no path measurement | The alternatives remain indistinguishable | Individual spots accumulating into alternating high- and low-probability bands | Yes |
| Both slits open, a physical detector identifies the slit | Which-path information is available | A distribution that no longer has the same two-path fringes | Interference changes or disappears |
This comparison separates four ideas that are often mixed together: how many slits are open, whether path information exists, what one detection looks like, and what appears after many detections.
Why the fringes depend on wavelength and slit spacing
The bright and dark bands are not fixed in place for every apparatus. Their geometry depends on the wavelength associated with the quantum waves and on the separation between the slits. OpenStax describes the constructive cases as crest-to-crest or trough-to-trough and the destructive case as crest-to-trough; the angles at which those conditions occur change when the wavelength or slit spacing changes.
For an ideal pair of narrow, parallel slits separated by distance d, bright fringes occur approximately where d sin θ = mλ, with m an integer and λ the wavelength. Dark fringes occur at the corresponding half-step conditions. The formula is a compact way of expressing the path difference needed for reinforcement or cancellation; it does not turn a quantum detection into a classical wave crest.

What measurement changes
The interference pattern depends on the alternatives remaining indistinguishable. If the apparatus can reveal which slit was taken, the alternatives are no longer combined in the same way, and the pattern changes or disappears.
Measurement means a physical interaction
A detector placed near a slit can interact with the passing quantum and leave information about its route. Even if nobody reads the detector, the physical interaction and the availability of route information matter. The Institute of Physics describes this as a detector at the slit exit; Feynman discusses the disturbance introduced by an apparatus capable of determining the path.
“It is impossible to design an apparatus to determine which hole the electron passes through, that will not at the same time disturb the electrons enough to destroy the interference pattern.” — Richard P. Feynman, The Feynman Lectures on Physics, Vol. III, Chapter 1.

Why “observation” does not mean human consciousness
Popular accounts sometimes say that an observer’s mind creates the result. That is not what this experiment establishes. “Observation” in this context means a physical measurement interaction that can distinguish alternatives or transfer which-path information. A conscious person is not required for the distribution to change.
Do the particles have a hidden route?
The experiment does not supply an everyday picture in which an unmeasured electron is secretly a tiny billiard ball following one ordinary path, nor does it require describing it as a tiny classical wave spread across the screen. Quantum mechanics gives the amplitudes and the probabilities that experiments test. Claims about what an unmeasured particle “really does” go beyond the direct pattern unless a particular interpretation is being discussed.
One-at-a-time detections are still a wave-like distribution
A single electron hitting the screen produces one localized mark. It does not produce a visible stripe across the entire screen. If the experiment is repeated, however, the collection of marks follows the calculated distribution. Dark bands receive few or no events, while bright bands receive more.

This is why the phrase “wave-particle duality” can be misleading when used as a slogan. The detection is localized, but the probabilities for where that detection can occur are governed by amplitudes that interfere. The experiment does not show a crowd of particles physically interfering with one another; the same distribution emerges when emissions are separated in time so that only one quantum is in the apparatus at a time.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Classical wave demonstrations versus quantum interference
Water waves, sound waves, and light treated as a classical electromagnetic wave can all demonstrate constructive and destructive interference. They are valuable classroom analogies because the geometry of reinforcement and cancellation is visible.
The quantum version adds two essential features. First, the quantities being added are probability amplitudes, and the probability is obtained only after taking the absolute square. Second, the detector records discrete events. A classical wave demonstration can reproduce fringe geometry without reproducing the full quantum meaning of a single-particle experiment.
Thus, saying that electrons “make a wave pattern” is shorthand for saying that their quantum amplitudes produce an interference-shaped probability distribution. It should not be read as a claim that each electron is a miniature material ripple in the same sense as a water wave.

The double-slit idea can be implemented with alternatives that are not simply two holes cut in a screen. A Berkeley Lab report published in connection with a Science issue dated November 9, 2007 described an experiment involving a hydrogen molecule. The molecule’s two proton nuclei served as slit-like alternatives, and researchers analyzed interference in the resulting electron waves.
That experiment is useful because it shows the underlying idea is broader than a particular laboratory silhouette. Whenever quantum alternatives can lead to the same outcome and remain indistinguishable, their amplitudes can combine. The 2007 date matters: this is a historical example, not a newly conducted experiment.

Common misunderstandings, corrected
“The particles must be hitting each other.”
No. The interference pattern can build when quanta are sent one at a time. The relevant combination is between amplitudes for alternatives, not collisions between separate particles.
“A person looking causes the pattern to vanish.”
No. A physical measurement that makes the path distinguishable is the relevant change. Human awareness is not a required ingredient.
“Each particle travels as a visible wave through both slits.”
That wording imports a classical picture. The experimentally tested statement is that the two alternatives contribute amplitudes whose sum determines probabilities. Interpretations differ over what an unmeasured object is doing between preparation and detection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Interference means every point is equally likely until someone checks.”
No. The apparatus, wavelength, slit separation, and measurement arrangement determine a probability distribution in advance. Checking the screen reveals one event sampled from that distribution.
“A detector can identify the path without changing anything.”
The path-identifying interaction changes the conditions that allowed the alternatives to interfere. Feynman’s formulation captures the practical limit: an apparatus that obtains which-hole information also disturbs the experiment enough to destroy the interference pattern.
How to explain quantum interference accurately
A reliable beginner-level explanation can follow this order:
- State that quantum mechanics assigns amplitudes to alternative ways of reaching an outcome.
- Explain that amplitudes are added before the absolute square is taken to obtain probability.
- Use the double-slit setup to show two indistinguishable alternatives.
- Distinguish a single localized detection from the many-event distribution.
- Describe constructive reinforcement and destructive cancellation.
- Explain that physical which-path information changes the result.
- Separate the classical wave analogy from claims about what an unmeasured particle is “really” doing.
This sequence keeps the mathematics, experiment, and interpretation connected without claiming more than the measurement demonstrates.
