Qi wireless charging transfers energy by magnetic induction. A charging pad’s transmitter coil creates a changing magnetic field, and a compatible phone’s receiver coil converts that field into electrical power for the battery. The phone and charger also exchange control signals so charging can be regulated and stopped when the battery is full.

Qi is contactless, not charger-less: the pad still needs a wired power supply. Alignment, the Qi generation or profile supported by each device, and the maximum power accepted by the phone determine whether charging starts and how quickly it proceeds.

Qi wireless charging in one sentence

Qi (pronounced “chee”) is an interoperability system for short-range wireless power. It defines how a power transmitter, such as a pad or stand, transfers energy to a power receiver inside a phone or another certified device. The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) introduced Qi in 2010; the system has since gained multiple profiles and power levels.

The central idea is electromagnetic induction. Electricity supplied to the charger is converted into an alternating current in a coil. That current produces a changing magnetic field. A nearby coil in the device responds to the field by inducing a voltage, which the phone’s charging electronics convert into usable power.

How Qi charging works step by step

1. The pad receives power

A Qi transmitter is not an energy source by itself. Its USB or other input must be connected to a wall adapter, computer, or another external supply. The transmitter electronics condition that incoming power and drive the coil beneath the charging surface.

2. The transmitter coil creates a magnetic field

Alternating current flows through the transmitter coil. Because the current is changing, the magnetic field around the coil changes as well. The field extends only across a short gap, which is why a phone must be placed on or very close to the pad.

3. The phone’s receiver coil captures the field

A compatible device contains a receiver coil, normally behind its back cover. When that coil is positioned within the transmitter’s field, the field induces a voltage in it. The phone’s power-management circuitry rectifies and regulates the induced energy, then directs it to the battery or to the phone’s operating system.

4. The phone and charger communicate

Qi is more than two passive coils. The receiver sends control information to the transmitter while power is being delivered. Those signals allow the system to adjust the transfer and tell the transmitter when charging should stop; the WPC specifically explains that a phone must be able to shut the transmitter down when its battery is full.

  • What You Get: PowerWave Pad, 4 ft Micro USB Cable, welcome guide, worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

5. Position affects the coupling

The coils must be close enough and aligned well enough for efficient coupling. A phone that is off-center may charge slowly, intermittently, or not at all. A stand can make placement easier to repeat, while a flat pad leaves positioning to the user. Magnetic attachment in the appropriate Qi2 profile helps hold the coils in the intended position.

What “wireless” does—and does not—mean

Qi removes the charging cable from the phone, not from the complete system. The transmitter still needs a cable and an external power adapter. Qi also does not mean unlimited distance: it is designed for a short gap between the transmitter and receiver coils.

The phone remains in control of the session. It negotiates power with the charger, accepts only what its supported charging profile allows, and can request that transmission stop. Consequently, a pad advertised with a high maximum output cannot force an incompatible phone to accept that rate.

Qi, Qi v2.0, Qi2, and Qi2 25W

“Qi2” is not simply a synonym for every Qi v2.0 product. The WPC describes a Qi v2.0 family that includes a magnetic profile and an enhanced non-magnetic profile. Check the exact profile and certification of a product rather than assuming that a Qi2-related label guarantees magnets.

Generation or profile What the WPC information establishes What it means for buyers
Qi (initial system) Qi launched in 2010 and defines interoperable wireless power transfer. Look for a Qi-certified transmitter and a phone that supports wireless charging.
Qi v2.0 Launched in 2023. The family includes an Enhanced Extended Power Profile without magnets and the Magnetic Power Profile. “Qi v2.0” alone does not prove that a charger has magnetic attachment.
Qi2 The WPC describes 15 W charging for mobile devices certified for interoperability and safety. The magnetic profile improves alignment. 15 W is a profile-level description, not a guaranteed result for every phone and charger combination.
Qi2 25W Launched in July 2025. The WPC says it offers nearly 70% more power than Qi2 and can charge a smartphone battery from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes. These are WPC-published claims, not an independent benchmark or a promise for every certified setup.
Qi specification v2.3 The WPC lists v2.3 as the latest specification and says it is available to WPC members. Public consumer pages do not provide the full member-restricted specification or all engineering test limits.

The WPC’s overview reports more than 13,000 Qi Certified products in the market; the page does not state the year for that figure. Version names therefore need context: a product can belong to the Qi v2.0 family without using the magnetic profile, and a phone must support the same relevant profile to obtain its intended benefits.

Will your phone work with a Qi charger?

Confirm that the phone has a receiver

Search the phone maker’s specifications or manual for Qi or wireless-charging support. A phone without a receiver coil cannot charge from a Qi pad, regardless of the pad’s advertised wattage.

Match the supported generation and profile

For basic charging, a Qi-compatible phone and certified Qi transmitter are the starting point. For Qi2 behavior, verify that the phone supports the corresponding Qi2 profile. Magnetic alignment requires support for the Magnetic Power Profile on the relevant devices; a non-magnetic Enhanced Extended Power Profile will not create magnetic attachment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the phone’s accepted power

Charging speed is limited by the lower capability in the pair. If a charger can provide more power than the phone accepts, the phone remains the limiting device. Conversely, a phone capable of a higher profile cannot obtain that rate from a lower-profile transmitter.

Consider the physical setup

Cases, camera bumps, and other accessories can change the distance or alignment between coils. If a phone repeatedly starts and stops charging, remove accessories temporarily and center the device. Magnetic products can make placement more repeatable only when both the phone and charger support the magnetic profile.

How Qi certification helps you buy with confidence

The WPC says Qi certification includes independent laboratory testing for safety, interoperability, and energy efficiency. Certified products are designed to work together across manufacturers, including products using earlier Qi versions. That makes certification stronger evidence than a marketplace listing that merely says “Qi compatible.”

Before buying, search the exact model in the WPC’s certified-products database. Match the model number, not just the manufacturer name or a product family. Listings can change, and similar-looking products may have different certification records or profiles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Certification is not an endorsement and is not a universal safety guarantee. The WPC states that manufacturers remain responsible for complying with applicable product-safety regulations and that WPC certification does not guarantee product safety. Use a reputable power adapter, follow the device maker’s instructions, and stop using equipment that is damaged or behaves abnormally.

A practical way to choose a Qi pad or stand

  1. Identify the phone’s wireless standard. Record whether it supports Qi, Qi v2.0, Qi2, the Magnetic Power Profile, or another stated profile.
  2. Set a realistic power target. Use the highest rate the phone itself supports, not simply the largest number printed on a charger box.
  3. Verify the exact transmitter model. Search that model in the WPC certified-products database and confirm its certification and profile.
  4. Choose the form factor. Select a flat pad for flexible placement or a stand when you want the screen visible and the charging position repeatable.
  5. Check magnetic requirements. Choose magnetic attachment only if the phone and charger both support the Magnetic Power Profile. A Qi v2.0 product using the non-magnetic profile will not provide that feature.
  6. Use the required external supply. Connect the transmitter to the input and adapter specified by its manufacturer. The wireless interface does not remove the need for a wired power source.
  7. Test with the phone centered. Place the receiver coil over the transmitter area and confirm that the phone reports charging. If it does not, remove the case or accessory and repeat the alignment check.

Pad or stand: which design fits?

Design Useful when Trade-off
Flat charging pad You want a simple surface for a phone or another compatible device and do not need to view the screen. Placement is less constrained, so the phone can be easier to misalign.
Charging stand You want the display visible for calls, notifications, navigation, or a desk clock while charging. The stand dictates the phone’s position and may require the phone and case to fit its support geometry.
Magnetic Qi2 charger Your phone and charger both implement the Magnetic Power Profile and you value repeatable alignment. Magnetic attachment is profile-dependent; a Qi v2.0 product without that profile will not provide it.

How fast will Qi charging be?

There is no single Qi speed. The result depends on the phone’s receiver, the transmitter’s certified profile, their negotiated power level, alignment, and the external supply feeding the charger. A charger’s maximum rating describes what that transmitter can offer under its supported conditions; it does not override the phone’s limit.

The WPC describes Qi2 as 15 W for certified mobile devices. It separately describes Qi2 25W, launched in July 2025, as nearly 70% more power than Qi2 and says a smartphone battery can go from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes. Both figures are WPC claims. They are not guarantees for every phone, battery size, temperature, adapter, case, or charger combination, and the 0-to-50% statement is not an independent test result.

Troubleshooting a Qi charging problem

The phone does not begin charging

  • Confirm that the phone model includes a wireless-charging receiver.
  • Reconnect the transmitter to its external power adapter and check that the adapter is suitable for the charger.
  • Center the phone over the pad’s coil area.
  • Remove a thick case or accessory and test again.
  • Check that the transmitter’s exact model is Qi Certified and that the phone supports its profile.

Charging starts and stops

  • Reposition the phone so the coils remain aligned.
  • Test without magnetic or non-magnetic accessories that may increase the gap.
  • Try the phone on another certified transmitter to distinguish a phone-side issue from a charger-side issue.
  • Confirm that the phone and charger are not being treated as a Qi2 magnetic pair when one supports only a non-magnetic profile.

The phone charges, but not at the expected rate

  • Compare the phone’s maximum supported power with the charger’s profile; the lower capability controls the result.
  • Check whether the advertised rate applies to Qi, Qi2, or Qi2 25W rather than to the exact phone model.
  • Verify the external power adapter and cable supplied to the transmitter.
  • Use the WPC certification record and the phone maker’s specifications instead of relying on a generic marketplace wattage claim.

Common misconceptions about Qi

“Wireless” means no cables anywhere

False. The phone can charge without a cable attached to it, but the pad still requires wired power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Every Qi2 product has magnets

False. Qi v2.0 includes both the Magnetic Power Profile and an enhanced non-magnetic profile. Confirm the exact profile before expecting magnetic attachment.

A 25 W label guarantees 25 W on my phone

False. The phone, charger, profile, alignment, and power supply all matter. The WPC’s Qi2 25W figures describe the standard’s stated capability and a published example, not a universal outcome.

Certification means the product is endorsed and completely safe

False. Certification indicates testing for the Qi program’s safety, interoperability, and energy-efficiency requirements. The WPC says manufacturers remain responsible for applicable safety rules and that certification does not guarantee product safety.

Qi’s timeline and current status

Date Milestone
2010 Qi initially launched, according to the WPC.
2023 Qi v2.0 launched, adding the magnetic and enhanced non-magnetic profile family.
July 2025 Qi2 25W launched, with WPC-published claims of nearly 70% more power than Qi2 and roughly 0-to-50% charging in 30 minutes for a smartphone battery.
Current listing The WPC identifies Qi specification v2.3 as the latest version; access to the full specification is restricted to WPC members.

For a purchase decision, the durable method is to verify the phone’s documented profile, select a charger with matching capability, and check the exact model in the WPC certification database. That process is more reliable than treating “Qi,” “Qi2,” or a wattage number as a complete compatibility guarantee.
