Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for Steam that lets many Windows-only games run on Linux. It combines a modified version of Wine with graphics translators: DXVK converts Direct3D 9, 10 and 11 calls to Vulkan, while vkd3d-proton handles Direct3D 12. Steam installs and launches the selected Proton build for you, so you can play supported Windows titles from the normal Steam library without installing Windows.

Proton is not an emulator and it is not a guarantee that every game will work. Compatibility depends on the title, its launcher and anti-cheat system, your GPU drivers, the Linux desktop session and the Proton release in use.

What Proton is—and what it is not

Valve describes Proton as a Steam client tool that allows games exclusive to Windows to run on Linux by using Wine. Steamworks documentation calls it a compatibility layer built from a modified Wine and high-performance graphics API implementations.

A compatibility layer presents the interfaces a Windows program expects and maps them to services available on another operating system. Proton does that for games started by Steam. It creates a Windows-like runtime environment, translates system calls, connects the game to Steam features and supplies graphics components that communicate with the Linux driver stack.

Proton is different from a virtual machine. A virtual machine runs a complete guest operating system, usually with additional memory and device overhead. Proton runs the game process directly on Linux while translating the Windows interfaces it uses. It is also different from an emulator in the traditional sense: it does not simulate an entire Windows computer or CPU instruction set. The exact performance and compatibility result still varies by game.

Do you need to install Wine separately?

No. Proton includes and modifies Wine for Steam’s use. Installing a separate Wine package is unnecessary for games launched through Steam and can create confusing, unrelated prefixes or configuration files. Stand-alone Windows applications can use Wine directly, but that is a different workflow from Steam’s Proton integration.

How the Proton stack runs a Windows game

When you click Play, Steam selects a Proton build, prepares the game’s environment and starts the Windows executable through that build. Several layers then cooperate.

Layer What it does When it matters
Steam Installs the game, chooses a Proton version, supplies launch options and manages the library entry. Every Steam game using Proton.
Modified Wine Maps Windows system calls, APIs, files, services and runtime behavior to Linux equivalents and provides a Windows-like environment. Games that expect Windows APIs or components.
DXVK Translates Direct3D 9, Direct3D 10 and Direct3D 11 rendering commands into Vulkan. Most games using those Direct3D generations.
vkd3d-proton Provides Direct3D 12 translation through Vulkan. Games built around Direct3D 12.
Linux graphics driver Implements Vulkan for the GPU and desktop environment. Any Proton game using DXVK or vkd3d-proton.

1. Steam chooses a Proton build

Steam ships multiple Proton versions. You can allow Steam to choose a default or select a version globally in Steam Play settings. A specific game can also override the global choice through its Properties dialog. Different releases contain different Wine fixes, graphics updates and workarounds, so a game that fails on one build may work on another.

2. Wine supplies Windows behavior

The modified Wine layer intercepts the Windows APIs used by the game and maps them to Linux services. It also maintains a per-game environment, commonly called a prefix, where the game’s Windows-style registry, configuration and installed components are kept separate from other titles. Proton and Steam handle the prefix location and launch details rather than asking you to create them manually.

3. Graphics calls are translated to Vulkan

Games normally issue Microsoft Direct3D commands. DXVK handles Direct3D 9, 10 and 11; vkd3d-proton handles Direct3D 12. These projects convert the commands to Vulkan calls that the Linux GPU driver understands. The translation is why a current, correctly installed Vulkan stack is central to Proton performance and startup reliability.

4. Steam-specific integration completes the launch

Proton includes Steam-oriented paths, runtime behavior and configuration so installation, updates, cloud features and launching remain in the Steam interface. This integration is why using the compatibility tool from Steam is generally simpler than assembling Wine, graphics translators and game-specific settings yourself.

Will your Steam games work on Linux?

There is no universal yes or no. Proton is a work in progress, and compatibility is a per-title question. Steam may label a game Unsupported when its review finds a blocking Proton bug or unacceptable performance, but a rating is not a permanent technical guarantee: game updates, Proton releases, drivers and anti-cheat changes can alter the result.

Check current, game-specific compatibility reports before buying a title or replacing hardware. Pay particular attention to the exact game version and the launch path you plan to use, because a Windows-only game with a simple executable can behave very differently from one that depends on a separate launcher, kernel-level anti-cheat or proprietary media components.

Factors that commonly decide compatibility

  • Game updates: a patch can add or remove an API dependency, change a launcher or break an existing workaround.
  • Launchers: secondary launchers may have their own login, overlay, browser or update requirements.
  • Copy protection: some protection systems do not operate correctly in a compatibility environment.
  • Anti-cheat: support depends on the particular technology and the developer’s configuration; Proton cannot make an unsupported system work automatically.
  • Media codecs: video playback, menus or in-game cutscenes can fail even when 3D rendering works.
  • Graphics API: a Direct3D 12 title exercises a different path from a Direct3D 9 game and may require different driver features.
  • Driver and desktop stack: Vulkan, kernel, compositor and desktop-session changes can affect frame pacing, input or startup.
  • Proton release: stable, experimental and other builds can contain different fixes and regressions.

Linux and GPU requirements

You need a supported 64-bit Linux distribution with a working Steam installation. The computer must have a GPU and driver stack that expose the Vulkan features required by the game and the chosen Proton build.

Driver checklist

  • Install a current proprietary NVIDIA driver when using an NVIDIA GPU, following your distribution’s supported packaging method.
  • For AMD or Intel graphics, keep Mesa, LLVM and the Vulkan packages current.
  • Install 32-bit Vulkan libraries when your distribution requires them for older or 32-bit game components. A 64-bit driver alone may not satisfy every title.
  • Confirm Vulkan works before troubleshooting Proton. A missing ICD, mixed driver versions or an incomplete 32-bit installation can prevent a game from starting.
  • Check that the GPU supports the Vulkan features required by the game’s rendering path; Proton cannot add hardware capabilities the device lacks.

Valve’s requirements guidance points to DXVK for Direct3D 9/10/11 support and vkd3d-proton for Direct3D 12 support. Those projects’ requirements, together with your distribution’s driver documentation, are more useful than assuming that any Vulkan-capable device supports every game.

When vm.max_map_count matters

Some modern games can exceed a Linux kernel’s default memory-map limit. Valve documents guidance for raising vm.max_map_count, but do not change that system setting pre-emptively. Apply the distribution-appropriate change only when the game’s documentation or diagnostic logs indicate that the limit is the cause, and make the change using your distribution’s documented method.

How to enable Proton in Steam

The labels can vary slightly by Steam client release and Linux distribution, but the workflow is consistent.

  1. Install Steam. Use the package or repository supported by your Linux distribution, then sign in and allow Steam to finish its runtime updates.
  2. Open Steam Play settings. In Steam, open Settings, then Compatibility (older clients may call this Steam Play).
  3. Enable Proton for supported games. Turn on the option that enables Steam Play or Proton for titles Valve has marked as supported, then restart Steam if it requests one.
  4. Decide how to handle other titles. The setting to enable Steam Play for all other titles lets you attempt games without a supported badge. Enable it when you accept that a title may fail, lack features or need manual tuning.
  5. Choose a per-game version when necessary. In your Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Compatibility, check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select an installed Proton version.
  6. Start with the default or stable build. Change to Proton Experimental or another installed release only when current reports, a game update or release notes indicate that it addresses your problem.
  7. Launch normally. Steam downloads the selected tool and creates the game’s Proton environment as part of installation or first launch.

Changing a Proton version does not turn an unsupported anti-cheat system into a supported one, and it does not replace a missing Vulkan driver. Treat version selection as a targeted compatibility test rather than a universal fix.

Launch options and diagnostic controls

Steam lets you add a launch option from a game’s Properties dialog under General. Options affect that game only when entered in its launch-options field.

Try WineD3D instead of Vulkan translation

Valve documents this option for cases where the Vulkan path fails or a game behaves more reliably with OpenGL-based WineD3D:

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

This is a fallback test, not a general performance recommendation. WineD3D uses an OpenGL-based path instead of DXVK’s Vulkan translation, so visual features, frame rate and latency may differ.

Generate a Proton log

For a reproducible bug report, use:

PROTON_LOG=1 %command%

Launch the game, reproduce the failure, then locate the generated diagnostic log according to Proton’s documented behavior. Remove or protect personal paths, usernames and account information before sharing it. A log is most useful when it includes the Proton version, game version, GPU, driver version and the exact symptom.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

Change one variable at a time so you know which action helped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify the symptom. Note whether the game fails before a window appears, crashes after a menu, has missing video, shows severe stutter or reaches gameplay with a specific feature broken.
  2. Check Vulkan first. Confirm that the correct GPU driver and required 32-bit libraries are installed. A Proton version change cannot repair a driver that Steam or the game cannot initialize.
  3. Update carefully. Install current distribution driver and Mesa updates, but record the previous versions so you can identify a regression.
  4. Try the game’s recommended Proton build. Start with the stable default, then test Experimental or a version specifically associated with the title. Avoid changing several Proton builds and launch options simultaneously.
  5. Inspect launcher and anti-cheat requirements. A game may render correctly while its launcher, sign-in service or anti-cheat blocks online play.
  6. Test the documented fallback. If the failure is clearly graphics initialization, try PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% and compare the result.
  7. Capture a log for persistent bugs. Use PROTON_LOG=1 %command%, reproduce the issue once, and report the relevant details without exposing private data.
  8. Apply system-level changes only with evidence. Consider vm.max_map_count or other kernel adjustments only when the game’s documentation or log points to that cause.

Proton compared with a native Linux build

A native Linux version is compiled for Linux and does not need Proton’s Windows API or Direct3D translation layers. That can simplify integration and reduce one source of compatibility risk, but a native build may lag behind the Windows release or omit features. Proton often gives Linux users access to a broader Windows game library while retaining title-specific uncertainty.

Consideration Native Linux build Windows build through Proton
Game coverage Limited to titles whose developers publish and maintain Linux builds. Potentially broader access to Windows releases, subject to Proton compatibility.
Graphics path Uses the APIs implemented by the Linux build, commonly Vulkan or OpenGL. Uses Wine plus DXVK for Direct3D 9/10/11 or vkd3d-proton for Direct3D 12.
Performance consistency Can avoid translation overhead, but quality depends on the developer’s Linux port. Can perform well, but frame-time behavior depends on translation, shaders, drivers and the game.
Launcher and anti-cheat Uses whatever Linux support the developer provides. Windows launchers and anti-cheat systems may require specific Proton support or fail.
Controller, VR and media features Depends on the native port’s implementation. Depends on Proton, Steam integration and each game’s Windows components.
Updates Controlled by the native Linux release and its maintenance schedule. Can be affected by both the game update and Proton updates.
Manual tuning Often less Proton-specific configuration. Some titles need a selected Proton release or launch option.

Choose the path that works best for the particular title, not the one that sounds more universal. A well-maintained native build may be the simplest option, while Proton can be the practical route when no native build exists.

Why Steam Deck is a prominent Proton example

Steam Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system. Valve’s Steam Deck booklet explains that the Proton translation layer allows most Windows games to run on SteamOS without requiring developers to perform heavy porting work. The device demonstrates Proton’s intended experience: Steam manages the compatibility tool, game installation and controller-oriented interface while the underlying system remains Linux.

Steam Deck does not make every PC game compatible. Its results still depend on the game, Proton release, graphics requirements, online services and updates. The same title can also behave differently on a desktop because hardware, drivers, display configuration and desktop session differ.

Common misconceptions

“Proton is a Windows license.”

It is not. Proton is software that implements Windows-compatible behavior on Linux; it does not include Windows itself or grant a license to Windows-only software.

“If a game starts, every feature works.”

Startup is only one compatibility checkpoint. Multiplayer authentication, anti-cheat, cutscenes, launchers, voice chat, VR, HDR and controller features can fail independently of 3D rendering.

“The newest Proton version is always best.”

New releases add fixes but can also expose regressions. The appropriate version is the one that works for the specific game and hardware, which is why Steam supports per-game selection.

“A faster GPU fixes Proton problems.”

More graphics performance cannot correct an unsupported anti-cheat system, a missing Vulkan library, a broken launcher or an API feature the GPU does not provide. Establish the software and driver path before attributing the issue to raw hardware speed.
