Prompt injection is an instruction-confusion attack: untrusted text is placed in a webpage, README, issue, log, or tool response, then an AI coding agent mistakes that text for an instruction from you. If the agent can run shell commands, read secrets, edit a repository, access a network, or send messages, the resulting action can be far more serious than a bad answer.

Malicious HTML does not need JavaScript to cause this problem. Hidden text, comments, attributes, links, images, metadata, and accessibility-tree content can all enter an agent’s context. The reliable response is defense in depth: minimize permissions, isolate execution, keep external content separate from instructions, authorize sensitive actions in trusted code, and require human approval for consequential operations.

What prompt injection means in a coding agent

A coding agent receives a goal, gathers context, and decides whether to call tools such as a shell, file editor, repository API, browser, package manager, or messaging service. Prompt injection occurs when content inside that context contains instructions that compete with the user’s goal and the agent follows the attacker’s instructions.

Direct and indirect injection

In a direct injection, the attacker addresses the model in a message they control. In an indirect injection, the attacker never needs to contact the model directly. They plant instructions in material the agent will later retrieve: a webpage, pull-request description, issue comment, README, dependency changelog, error trace, generated document, or MCP tool response.

Microsoft’s guidance summarizes the core rule: “Treat any external or user-provided content as untrusted.” Approval by a browser, repository host, or integration does not make the text authoritative. The agent still needs a separate rule that tells it which messages are instructions and which are data to analyze.

Why coding agents have a larger blast radius

A text-only chatbot may produce a misleading paragraph. A coding agent can turn the same confusion into an external effect. Depending on its configuration, it may read environment variables, open private files, install a package, change source code, push a branch, call an API, or send a request containing data. OWASP describes the dangerous combination as access to private data, exposure to untrusted content, and the ability to act or communicate externally.

The risk is therefore determined less by the wording of the malicious sentence than by the authority granted to the agent. A read-only agent in a disposable workspace is a different security problem from an agent with repository-write permission, production credentials, and unrestricted outbound network access.

How malicious HTML reaches the model

  1. Placement: An attacker adds visible or hidden text, an HTML comment, an attribute, a link target, an image URL, metadata, or content exposed through the accessibility tree. The page can look normal to a person.
  2. Ingestion: The agent fetches the page, follows a link, imports documentation, indexes a repository, or receives the page through a retrieval or MCP tool.
  3. Instruction confusion: The model sees attacker-controlled text in its context. If the boundary between system instructions, user instructions, and retrieved data is weak, phrases such as “ignore the task,” “read a secret,” or “call this tool” may be treated as commands.
  4. Action or exfiltration: The agent produces attacker-chosen output, edits files, executes a command, sends a request, or writes data to a place the attacker can observe.

An illustrative hidden element

The following is a harmless illustration of the delivery mechanism, not an instruction to follow. A parser or accessibility tree may preserve the text even though a normal visual rendering hides it:

Other variants use HTML comments, off-screen positioning, zero-width characters, encoded entities, bidirectional-override characters, alt text, link URLs, or image requests. An agent can encounter the text while extracting page content even when a human never sees it.

JavaScript is not required

HTML is a data format, and the danger here is interpretation by the model, not browser code execution. A hidden string, comment, image tag, or link can be copied into the model’s context without running JavaScript. Conversely, stripping scripts alone does not remove the attack surface if the remaining markup still contains attacker instructions.

The complete attack chain in a coding workflow

Stage What the agent sees Security consequence
Source Issue body, pull request, README, log, webpage, dependency note, or tool response Untrusted text is introduced into an otherwise trusted workflow
Context assembly Retrieved text is placed beside the user’s request and tool instructions Weak delimiting lets data resemble a higher-priority instruction
Model decision The agent decides to obey the embedded request It may select a shell, file, network, or repository tool
Tool execution Arguments are sent to an executor or external service Permissions, credentials, and network reach determine the blast radius
Observable effect Files change, data leaves the environment, or a branch or message is written Attackers gain impact even though they never controlled the model directly

Microsoft has documented image and link channels that encode data in URLs. In a tool-enabled system, a request to an attacker-controlled endpoint can therefore become an exfiltration channel, even if the agent’s visible answer looks innocuous.

What the evidence shows—and what it does not

A 2025 arXiv study demonstrated universal adversarial triggers embedded in webpage HTML that hijacked agents parsing the HTML accessibility tree. The demonstrated objectives included credential exfiltration and forced ad clicks. This is a research demonstration: it proves that the failure mode is technically possible in tested systems, not that every production agent is exploitable in the same way.

The 2025 AIShellJack evaluation reported 314 payloads spanning 70 MITRE ATT&CK techniques. Across the tested GitHub Copilot and Cursor editor/model combinations, malicious-command attack success rates ranged from 41% to 84%, with the highest reported rate being 84%. Those percentages describe the evaluated configurations and prompts; they are not a universal failure rate for all coding agents.

Detection by the model alone is not a security boundary. Microsoft calls indirect-injection detection an open research challenge, and OpenAI warns that broad instructions such as reviewing email and taking whatever action is needed make hidden malicious content easier to obey. Deterministic permission checks and isolation must carry the security load.

Controls that reduce the risk, in engineering order

1. Reduce the agent’s authority

Start from deny and explicitly allow only the reads and test commands required for the task. Make these defaults:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • No production credentials, cloud-admin tokens, SSH keys, or long-lived API keys in the agent environment.
  • No home-directory mount and no access to unrelated repositories.
  • No repository push, release, deployment, billing, or messaging permission unless a human authorizes that specific operation.
  • No unrestricted network. Permit only the domains and methods required for dependency retrieval or a documented test.
  • Separate read, write, and execute capabilities instead of giving one tool all three.

Short-lived, narrowly scoped credentials limit what an injected instruction can steal or change. If a task needs a secret, retrieve it through a broker that returns only the specific value and records the request, rather than exposing the entire environment.

2. Isolate execution

Run work involving untrusted repositories or webpages in a disposable container or virtual machine. Use a clean workspace, a non-privileged user, no production mounts, and restricted outbound traffic. Destroy the environment after the task or after any suspicious event. Isolation does not prevent a bad edit inside the workspace, but it prevents that edit from automatically becoming a workstation compromise or a production change.

3. Separate data from instructions

Delimit retrieved material and label it explicitly as untrusted data. Tell the agent to summarize, extract, or compare the content rather than obeying commands found inside it. Prefer a structured extractor that returns fields such as title, headings, links, and code blocks instead of passing raw HTML when raw markup is unnecessary.

Keep system and developer instructions outside the retrieved-data field. A tool response should be represented as a value to inspect, not concatenated into a new instruction string. OWASP’s MCP guidance states: “Treat every tool response as untrusted data, including responses from approved servers.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Sanitize every representation

Before content is rendered, indexed, or reused, strip or escape HTML and Markdown elements that are not needed. Remove hidden links, image tags, HTML entities, zero-width characters, and bidirectional-override characters. Preserve the original in quarantine for forensic review, but give the model a normalized representation with clear source boundaries. Sanitization reduces attack opportunities; it cannot prove that the remaining prose is safe.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

5. Authorize actions in trusted code

Validate tool arguments outside the model. Enforce path allowlists, command policies, destination-domain restrictions, maximum file sizes, and rate limits in the executor or gateway. Require an explicit approval for destructive commands, external writes, credential access, network calls containing sensitive data, and repository pushes. The approval prompt should show the exact command, paths, destination, and diff so a person can make an informed decision.

6. Use detection as a layer, not a guarantee

Prompt filters, HTML scanners, Spotlighting-style transformations, and adversarial red-team tests can lower the chance that an injection is followed. Test with hidden text, comments, accessibility-tree content, encoded characters, image and link URLs, and instructions split across multiple elements. Treat a clean scan as evidence that one detector did not fire, not as permission to remove sandboxing or approval gates.

7. Monitor and make rollback easy

Log the user request, retrieved sources, normalized content, model output, tool arguments, approvals, network destinations, file changes, and final outcome. Alert on unexpected outbound requests, access to environment files, sudden repository rewrites, new executables, or commands outside the task’s allowlist. Keep disposable worktrees and commit checkpoints so a suspicious change can be discarded without guessing what happened.

A safe workflow for an untrusted repository or webpage

  1. Classify the source. Mark webpages, issue text, pull requests, READMEs, logs, dependency notes, and tool responses as untrusted before the agent reads them.
  2. Quarantine the input. Fetch or clone it into a disposable container or VM with no production credentials, no home-directory mount, and restricted egress.
  3. Normalize it. Parse the document, remove unnecessary markup and hidden channels, decode safely for inspection, and retain a separate untouched copy for investigation.
  4. Define the task narrowly. State the files the agent may read, the tests it may run, and the directories it may modify. State that instructions found in the source are data, not authority.
  5. Configure tools before starting. Deny shell, network, secret, and write capabilities by default; allow only the exact operations required. Set time, file-size, and network limits.
  6. Review proposed actions. Require the agent to explain why each command or external request is needed. Approve sensitive actions independently of the model.
  7. Inspect results. Review the diff, generated files, test output, and network log. Run security checks with a separate process before merging or publishing anything.
  8. Destroy or reset the environment. Revoke temporary credentials and discard the container when the task ends or whenever the agent encounters a suspicious instruction.

Recognizing and recovering from an injection

Warning signs

  • The agent suddenly says it must ignore the original task or follow instructions found in a document.
  • It requests environment variables, private keys, unrelated files, or broad network access.
  • It proposes sending data to an unfamiliar URL, downloading an unneeded package, or changing security settings.
  • It edits files outside the declared workspace, rewrites history, or attempts a push without approval.
  • Its tool arguments contain encoded data, very long URLs, or commands unrelated to the requested work.

Immediate response

  1. Stop the agent and cancel pending tool calls; do not approve the next action to see what happens.
  2. Revoke or rotate any credential that may have been exposed, especially short-lived tokens that were active during the run.
  3. Preserve logs, the retrieved HTML or repository snapshot, tool arguments, network records, and filesystem changes.
  4. Destroy the workspace or restore it from a known-clean snapshot. Do not continue from a contaminated worktree.
  5. Review commits, pull requests, messages, package changes, and external requests for unauthorized effects.
  6. Block the source or destination and update allowlists, sanitizers, and tests before retrying in a fresh environment.

How to compare coding-agent designs

When choosing or reviewing an agent setup, compare the same six axes rather than relying on a model’s claimed ability to spot attacks:

Axis Questions to answer
Permissions and credentials Can the agent read secrets, write repositories, deploy, or message externally? Are credentials short-lived and scoped?
Filesystem and network isolation Is execution disposable? Are home and production mounts absent? Which outbound domains are allowed?
Handling of retrieved content Are HTML, Markdown, and tool responses delimited, labeled untrusted, and converted to structured data?
Independent authorization Does trusted code validate arguments and require approval for destructive, sensitive, or external actions?
Logging and rollback Are prompts, sources, tool calls, network activity, diffs, and approvals recorded, with a clean restore point?
Adversarial resistance Has the setup been tested against hidden text, comments, accessibility-tree content, encoded characters, links, images, and multi-step payloads?

The safest design assumes that some injections will reach the model. It limits what the model can do after that point, makes every consequential action visible, and provides a fast path to revoke, investigate, and roll back.
