PowerToys FancyZones is a Windows window-management utility that overlays a layout of target areas—called zones—on a display. You choose or design a layout, then drag windows into those targets (or move them with keyboard shortcuts); FancyZones resizes and repositions each window to fit. Zones are software-defined placement targets, not physical monitor partitions or additional displays. The feature is documented by Microsoft’s FancyZones guide.
What FancyZones actually does
FancyZones is one of the utilities in Microsoft PowerToys. It solves a practical Windows problem: arranging several applications so that they occupy predictable portions of one or more monitors without repeatedly dragging borders and aligning edges by eye.
A layout consists of one or more rectangular zones. When you place a window in a zone, FancyZones changes that window’s position and size to match the target. The zones are visual guides and placement rules drawn over the desktop; they do not create independent desktops, split the monitor signal, or change the monitor’s physical pixels. You can still move, minimize, maximize, or close the windows normally.
Layouts are associated with individual monitors by default. The layout editor previews the selected monitor, and the available targets normally appear on the monitor that has focus while you drag a window. A separate option can show targets on every connected monitor.

How a monitor is divided into zones
Open the editor from PowerToys Settings, or press the default shortcut Win+Shift+` (the backtick key). The shortcut can be changed in PowerToys. The editor displays built-in arrangements and lets you create custom ones, then applies the selected layout to the monitor you are editing.
Built-in layouts
Built-in layouts provide ready-made arrangements such as side-by-side columns or a larger primary area beside smaller supporting areas. Select one in the editor and save or apply it; the zones immediately become targets for windows on that monitor. The exact number and proportions depend on the layout you choose and the monitor’s usable screen area.
Custom Grid layouts
A custom Grid starts as a three-column grid. You can split an area, move the dividers, and merge adjacent zones to create rows, columns, or larger combined regions. Grid geometry is relative, so the arrangement scales when the same layout is used on a display with a different resolution or size. It is a good fit when you want clean, aligned columns and rows.

A custom Canvas starts with one zone. You add zones and then move or resize each one freely, much like manipulating windows themselves. Canvas zones can overlap. That freedom is useful for an intentionally asymmetric arrangement—for example, a wide work area with smaller reference areas—but overlapping targets require more care when you drag a window because more than one zone may occupy the pointer’s location.

Snap windows with the mouse
The standard mouse workflow is a drag-and-drop operation:
- Make sure the window you want to arrange is not being dragged from a maximized state in a way that prevents normal movement. Grab its title bar.
- Hold Shift while dragging. FancyZones displays the zones allowed by your activation settings.
- Move the pointer over a zone. The zone highlights, showing where the window will be placed.
- Release the mouse button. FancyZones moves and resizes the window to that zone.
Activation behavior is configurable, so your installation may show zones under different conditions if you changed the default settings. If you need one window to occupy more than one adjacent target, hold Ctrl while dragging and select multiple zones. You can also combine adjacent zones by hovering near their shared edge; the editor presents the combined target when the zones can be joined.
When a drag starts, FancyZones normally presents targets only on the focused monitor. If you often move windows across displays, enable the setting that shows zones on all monitors so you can choose a target without first moving the pointer to another screen.
Move windows with the keyboard
Keyboard placement requires the Override Windows Snap option in FancyZones settings. After it is enabled, Windows-key arrow shortcuts can move the active window through the zones in your layout.

Zone-index mode
In zone-index mode, Win+Left and Win+Right move the window through zones by their index in the layout. The Windows-key Up and Down shortcuts retain their normal Windows behavior. This mode is predictable when you think of your layout as an ordered list of targets.
Relative-position mode
Relative-position mode interprets a zone’s physical position. All four arrow combinations—Win+Left, Win+Right, Win+Up, and Win+Down—move the window toward the zone in that direction. This is usually more natural for layouts with rows and columns or for Canvas layouts where numerical order is less meaningful.
With relative positioning enabled, Win+Ctrl+Alt plus an arrow can expand a window across multiple zones. The result depends on the neighboring zones in the current layout; it is not the same as maximizing the window to the entire monitor.

Quick layout switching is useful when your work changes during the day: assign one numbered layout for writing, another for coding, and another for communications, then switch without rebuilding each arrangement. The assignment is made in FancyZones after the quick-switch option is enabled.

Using FancyZones with multiple monitors
Independent monitor layouts
By default, each monitor can have its own layout. A portrait monitor can therefore use a tall column arrangement while a landscape monitor uses several horizontal zones. Dragging a window normally reveals the zones for the monitor involved in that drag.
Showing zones on every monitor
A setting can make FancyZones display available targets on all connected monitors during a drag. This does not merge the displays; it simply makes their individual zones visible at the same time.
Spanning monitors as one large screen
FancyZones also has an option to span zones across monitors, treating the connected displays as one large screen. Microsoft requires every connected monitor to use the same DPI scaling for this mode. If monitors have different orientations, the documentation warns that the result can be unexpected. Check scaling in Windows display settings before enabling cross-monitor spanning, and disable the option if the combined layout does not align with the physical arrangement of your screens.

Limitations and compatibility issues
DPI scaling and non-DPI-aware applications
When monitors use different scaling values, a zone that touches a screen edge may not line up perfectly for an application that is not DPI-aware. Microsoft notes that the window border can remain a few pixels away from the physical edge. This is a Windows scaling limitation rather than an indication that the zone coordinates are wrong. Matching the monitors’ scaling values or using independent monitor layouts generally avoids the most visible edge discrepancy.

Elevated applications
Applications running with elevated permissions—Microsoft gives Windows Terminal and Task Manager as examples—may not accept a snap from a normally running PowerToys process. Run PowerToys as administrator when an elevated window refuses to enter a zone, while following your organization’s security policy. Elevating PowerToys changes its permission level, so do not do this solely to fix an ordinary, non-elevated application.
Applications that cannot be zoned
FancyZones’ compatibility documentation includes a list of applications that cannot be zoned. If one particular program never responds while other windows work, consult the current compatibility section in Microsoft’s FancyZones documentation rather than repeatedly changing the layout. A program that draws its own surface, uses unusual window styles, or blocks standard resizing may not be controllable by FancyZones.
Unexpected results after changing displays
- If a window jumps to a surprising target, open the editor and confirm that you are editing the intended monitor; layouts are normally monitor-specific.
- If a zone appears offset after docking or undocking a display, recheck monitor orientation and DPI scaling, then reopen the editor and apply the layout again.
- If keyboard arrows move a window in an unexpected direction, check whether FancyZones is set to zone-index or relative-position mode.
- If zones do not appear while dragging, verify the activation setting and hold Shift during the drag under the default workflow.
Choosing a layout that fits your work
Use Grid for repeatable structure
Choose Grid when alignment matters: a document beside a browser, three equal research columns, or a main application with a consistent side panel. Splitting and merging lets you change proportions without losing the underlying row-and-column structure, and the relative design adapts when the monitor resolution changes.
Use Canvas for deliberate asymmetry
Choose Canvas when fixed columns waste space. You can give a primary application most of the width, place a narrow reference zone along an edge, and add a small overlapping target for a tool palette. Because Canvas zones may overlap, leave enough visual separation to identify the intended target during a drag.
Use numbered layouts for changing contexts
Keep separate layouts for distinct tasks and assign numbers for quick switching. A layout can reserve a large zone for a single application, while another can divide the same monitor into several equal areas. Switching layouts changes the available targets; it does not create separate Windows user sessions or virtual monitors.
What FancyZones does not do
- It does not physically divide a monitor or require a special display, cable, or monitor firmware.
- It does not create additional displays in Windows Display Settings.
- It does not guarantee that every application can be resized or positioned, especially incompatible or elevated programs.
- It does not make mismatched DPI scaling behave like a single perfectly continuous panel when monitors are spanned.
