Point Nemo is the point in the South Pacific Ocean farthest from any land. It is commonly placed at 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W, about 2,688 kilometres from the nearest land according to NOAA. It is not an island, a settlement, or a destination with a shoreline: it is a geographic point calculated from the shapes of surrounding coastlines.

The formal term is the oceanic pole of inaccessibility. The nearest land points are Ducie Island to the north, Motu Nui to the northeast, and Maher Island in Antarctica to the south. A 2007 peer-reviewed calculation reported a very similar nearest-coast distance of 2,690 ± 2 kilometres.

What Point Nemo means

A pole of inaccessibility is the location farthest from a specified coastline. For Point Nemo, the question is not simply “where is the middle of the Pacific?” Instead, the calculation examines every possible ocean location and asks how far each one is from its closest land. The winning point is the one whose nearest coast is farther away than the nearest coast to any other ocean point.

NOAA describes Point Nemo as “the location in the ocean that is farthest from land.” That wording is important. Point Nemo is a mathematical location on the sea, not a physical object that rises above the water. There is no island called Nemo at the coordinates, and the point has no permanent shore, building, monument, or administrative boundary.

It is an oceanic, not continental, pole

The phrase “pole of inaccessibility” can describe the most remote point relative to land in different settings. Point Nemo is specifically the oceanic example: the point in the ocean with the greatest possible minimum distance to land. Its result depends on how coastlines are represented and on the geographic method used to measure distances.

It is not necessarily the geographic center of the Pacific

A geometric center, a point equidistant from selected boundaries, and a pole of inaccessibility are different concepts. Point Nemo is chosen by maximizing the distance to the nearest coastline. That makes it a remoteness calculation rather than a simple center-of-area calculation.

Where is Point Nemo?

The commonly cited coordinates are 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W. They place the point in the South Pacific Ocean, south of the equator and west of South America. Coordinates identify a position on a map or navigation system; they do not imply that land is present at that position.

Reading the coordinates

  • 48°52.6′S: the latitude is 48 degrees and 52.6 minutes south of the equator.
  • 123°23.6′W: the longitude is 123 degrees and 23.6 minutes west of the prime meridian.
  • South Pacific: the point lies in open ocean, separated from the nearest land by roughly 2,700 kilometres.

Different maps may display the position with a slightly different final digit or in decimal degrees. That does not automatically indicate a different location. The standard coordinates are rounded representations of a result that depends on the coastline data and calculation used.

The three nearest land points

NOAA identifies three closest land points around Point Nemo:

Land point Direction from Point Nemo Role in the calculation
Ducie Island North One of the nearest coastline points
Motu Nui Northeast One of the nearest coastline points
Maher Island South One of the nearest coastline points

These are the closest land references, not three alternative names for Point Nemo. The point itself remains in the ocean between them.

How far is Point Nemo from land?

NOAA gives an approximate nearest-land distance of 2,688 kilometres. In a 2007 article in the Scottish Geographical Journal, Daniel Garcia-Castellanos and U. Lombardo reported 2,690 ± 2 kilometres from the Point Nemo location to the coasts of Motu Nui, Maher Island, and Ducie Island.

Source Distance reported How to interpret it
NOAA Ocean Service, page last updated January 4, 2021 Approximately 2,688 km A rounded public-facing estimate
Garcia-Castellanos and Lombardo, 2007 2,690 ± 2 km A calculated value with an uncertainty range

The two figures are effectively consistent. A difference of two kilometres is small compared with the scale of the Pacific and can result from rounding, the coastline dataset, the exact point selected, or the distance algorithm. It is more accurate to preserve each source’s precision than to present one number as a correction of the other.

What the distance does and does not mean

  • It is the distance from the Point Nemo position to the nearest land, not the total distance to all surrounding islands and Antarctica.
  • It is not a radius defining a circular zone in which no land exists; coastlines and distances are not arranged as a perfect circle around the point.
  • It is not a claim that every map, navigation database, or future calculation will show exactly the same final kilometre.

How scientists calculate a pole of inaccessibility

The underlying definition is concise: “A Pole of Inaccessibility (PIA) is defined as the location furthest from a particular coastline.” Applying that definition to the ocean requires a digital representation of coastlines and a method for measuring geographic distance.

Step 1: Define the relevant coastline

The calculation begins by deciding which land boundaries count. A coastline dataset may represent small islands, coastal inlets, and shoreline details at a particular resolution. Two datasets can therefore describe the same world with slightly different edges.

Step 2: Evaluate ocean locations

A numerical algorithm examines candidate positions in the ocean. For each candidate, it determines the distance to the closest coastline. The candidate with the largest nearest-coast distance becomes the pole of inaccessibility.

Step 3: Refine the maximum

Once the broadest remote area is identified, the calculation can be refined to locate the maximum more precisely. The reported coordinates and distance then reflect the resolution and assumptions of the data and algorithm.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Step 4: Report precision and uncertainty

A result should retain the uncertainty supported by the calculation. Garcia-Castellanos and Lombardo reported 2,690 ± 2 kilometres, while NOAA presents the result as approximately 2,688 kilometres. Those formats communicate different levels of numerical detail without requiring a meaningful disagreement.

Why different sources can show slightly different values

Point Nemo is stable as a geographic idea, but the last decimal place is not independent of methodology. Three factors matter most.

Coastline representation

Shorelines are complex. A high-resolution dataset may include small coastal features that a generalized map omits. Whether a tiny island or a detailed shoreline segment is represented can change which land point is closest and alter the calculated maximum by a small amount.

Distance and map projection

Global distances are measured on a curved Earth, not on a flat sheet of paper. The numerical procedure must account for geographic coordinates and use an appropriate distance calculation. Different implementations can produce slightly different rounded results.

Rounding and stated uncertainty

One publisher may round to the nearest kilometre for readability; another may publish an uncertainty interval. A value such as 2,688 kilometres and a value of 2,690 ± 2 kilometres should be read with those qualifications attached, rather than compared as if they were measurements made under identical reporting rules.

Why it is called Point Nemo

The name refers to Captain Nemo, the submarine commander in Jules Verne’s novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. “Nemo” means “no one” in Latin, a fitting literary reference for a location defined by its extreme separation from land. The name is a label for the calculated point, not evidence that the fictional character visited it.

What a visit to Point Nemo would involve

Because Point Nemo is an ocean coordinate, reaching it means travelling to the specified position at sea rather than arriving at a port or stepping onto land. A map pin can identify the location, but there is no natural shoreline or built visitor site at the point itself.

What you can use to locate it

  1. Open a globe, nautical chart, or mapping application that accepts latitude and longitude.
  2. Enter 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W using the application’s coordinate format.
  3. Confirm that the marker appears in the South Pacific Ocean rather than on a coastline.
  4. Measure to the nearest mapped land only if the application explains its distance method and map resolution.

A consumer map may display a rounded marker or use generalized coastlines. That view is suitable for understanding the location, but it should not be treated as a replacement for the published calculation.

Common misconceptions about Point Nemo

Misconception What the evidence supports
Point Nemo is an island. It is a point in the ocean, with no island or shore at the coordinates.
It is a country or an inhabited settlement. It is a geographic reference location, not a political or residential place.
There is one immutable distance accepted by every source. Published figures vary slightly with coastline data, calculation method, and rounding.
The coordinates identify a physical marker. The coordinates identify a calculated position on the sea.
Any nearby land can be called Point Nemo. The name applies to the oceanic pole itself; Ducie Island, Motu Nui, and Maher Island are separate nearest land points.

What Point Nemo demonstrates about geographic measurement

Point Nemo is a useful example of how geographic facts combine a definition with data and computation. “Farthest from land” sounds absolute, but the result still requires choices about which coastline is represented, how distances are calculated, and how many digits are reported.

That does not make the location arbitrary. The standard coordinates and the roughly 2,700-kilometre nearest-land distance are stable enough for atlases, educational explanations, and general mapping. The methodological qualification matters when sources appear to disagree by a few kilometres or when a map presents more decimal places than its underlying coastline data can justify.
