POCO began in 2018 as a Xiaomi smartphone brand aimed at technology enthusiasts. Its first phone, the POCO F1, launched in India on August 22, 2018. POCO later described itself as an independent brand with its own product, sales, and marketing team, while continuing to share Xiaomi’s manufacturing and after-sales resources.
What is POCO?
POCO is a smartphone brand that Xiaomi launched in 2018 for people seeking high-performance phones. Xiaomi’s 2018 third-quarter report described the launch as a response to technology enthusiasts’ preference for extreme smartphone performance. The company’s annual report placed POCO within a broader multi-brand strategy designed to serve different groups of users.
POCO’s official brand line is “Everything you need, nothing you don’t.” Its first product was the POCO F1.
When did the POCO F1 launch?
Xiaomi’s 2018 third-quarter report dates the first POCO smartphone’s release in India to August 22, 2018. POCO’s About page identifies that first phone as the POCO F1. These sources establish the India release date; they do not provide a complete launch-date timeline for every country.

Is POCO part of Xiaomi?
POCO calls itself an independent brand born out of Xiaomi Corporation. It says it has its own product, sales, and marketing team, but shares Xiaomi’s manufacturing and after-sales resources. That supports describing POCO as a brand with its own team and identity within an ongoing Xiaomi relationship.
“Independent brand” should not be read as proof that POCO is a separate legal entity or that it completed a legal spin-off. The cited company pages do not establish that kind of legal separation or give a full chronology of organizational changes.

How did POCO grow beyond its first phone?
POCO says it entered more than 35 global markets within three years of its launch. It also reports more than 9 million POCO phone shipments in 2020 and more than 2.2 million POCO F1 shipments. These are figures reported by POCO; the sources cited here do not independently audit them.

The available figures indicate that POCO expanded beyond its original India launch, but they do not establish a complete model-by-model history or prove that every phone was sold in every market.

What changed when POCO’s global website closed?
In a notice dated September 10, 2024, POCO said its global websites would close on December 31, 2024, and that product pages and services would move to Xiaomi’s global site. The notice also said Xiaomi would continue customer and after-sales support for products previously purchased through local POCO sites and the POCO Store app.
Xiaomi’s global POCO page lists POCO phone series. That confirms an ongoing product presence on the global site, but does not establish stock or availability in any particular country. Check the relevant local Xiaomi site for current models, sales, and support information.
