Physical AI is artificial intelligence connected to a body or machine that can sense and change the physical world. A robot camera, force sensor, or joint encoder supplies observations; a policy or decision system interprets them in relation to a task; motors and actuators carry out an action; and the next observations reveal what happened. This closed loop is what separates physical AI from software that only produces text, images, or predictions.
The term is widely used in industry, including by NVIDIA, but it is not a formally settled standard. It describes a family of systems rather than one model, robot shape, or training method.
What physical AI means
A useful working definition is: an AI system that perceives conditions in the physical environment, reasons about a task, and acts through a machine. NVIDIA’s SO-101 learning documentation puts it plainly: “Physical AI refers to AI systems that interact with and manipulate the physical world.” That is a vendor definition, not a definition issued by a standards body.

A text model can answer a question without changing anything outside the computer. A physical-AI system must deal with geometry, contact, timing, friction, motion, uncertainty, and the consequences of an incorrect action. Its output is not merely a sentence or classification; it may be a motor position, wheel velocity, gripper command, or a higher-level instruction to another controller.

Physical AI is broader than humanoid robots
A humanoid can be a physical-AI platform, but the category also includes robotic arms, mobile robots, drones, warehouse systems, agricultural machines, and other embodied devices. The body may be simple or highly complex. What matters is that the system receives observations from the world and can affect that world through actuators.
Physical AI is not one specific algorithm
Some systems use vision-language-action (VLA) models that combine a language instruction with visual observations and produce robot actions. Others use engineered motion planning, imitation learning, reinforcement learning, classical feedback control, or combinations of these. A VLA model is one approach, not a requirement for every physical-AI system.
How a robot learns to act: the closed loop
Robot behavior is usually organized as a repeated loop rather than a one-time prediction. The exact architecture varies, but the practical sequence looks like this:
- Observe: Cameras, depth sensors, microphones, force or torque sensors, and joint feedback report the robot’s state and its surroundings.
- Interpret and decide: A policy relates those observations to a task. It may estimate object locations, infer the next step, check constraints, and select an action. In a VLA system, a language instruction can be combined with camera observations and joint feedback.
- Act: The policy sends commands such as target motor positions or velocities. Actuators move the arm, wheels, gripper, or other end effector.
- Observe again: New sensor data shows whether the object moved, whether contact occurred, and whether the task state changed.
- Learn or recover: During development, demonstrations, reinforcement signals, or failure data are used to improve the policy. During operation, a controller may retry, stop, or request help when observations do not match expectations.
This feedback is essential. A command that is correct in a static image can fail when an object slips, a camera is blocked, or a joint reaches a limit.
What enters the policy
- Visual observations: RGB or depth images from fixed, wrist-mounted, or stereo cameras.
- Robot state: Joint positions, velocities, gripper state, battery status, and other telemetry.
- Task information: A goal, sequence, map, or natural-language instruction such as “pick up the vial and place it on the rack.”
- Interaction signals: Contact, force, torque, or tactile readings when the task depends on grasping or insertion.
Missing or degraded observations are normal engineering cases, not edge conditions. A policy must either tolerate them, use another sensor, slow down, or stop safely.
How robots acquire the skill
Training supplies a mapping from observations and task context to useful actions. The data and objective determine what a robot can generalize, how much physical testing is needed, and how failures are handled.

Demonstrations and imitation learning
In demonstration-based training, a person teleoperates the robot or provides example trajectories. The policy learns to reproduce relationships between the observed state and the demonstrated action. This can be efficient for a narrowly defined manipulation task because the examples show the desired sequence directly.

Its limitation is coverage. If demonstrations contain only clear views, one object arrangement, or one speed, performance may degrade when an object is rotated, partially hidden, or placed elsewhere. Deliberately varied demonstrations and recovery examples are therefore valuable.
Reinforcement learning
Reinforcement learning improves a policy using rewards or penalties associated with outcomes. Training can happen in simulation, on hardware, or in a combination. It can discover behaviors that are difficult to script, but poorly designed rewards can produce unsafe or useless shortcuts. Physical trials also consume time and hardware life, so constraints and staged testing matter.
Vision-language-action models
A VLA model links a language-level task with visual and robot-state inputs and predicts actions. This can make the interface more flexible than a fixed command list. It does not remove the need for low-level control, calibration, collision limits, or task-specific validation. Language ambiguity, unfamiliar objects, and occlusion still have to be handled by the complete robot system.
Why simulation is central to physical-AI development
Simulation provides a controllable environment in which developers can generate scenarios, train policies, evaluate changes, and investigate some failures without repeatedly risking hardware. NVIDIA’s learning materials describe simulation and synthetic data as ways to expand scenario variety and support robot learning and validation. The SO-101 course specifically identifies development time, hardware cost, failure risk, and limited physical scenario diversity as motivations for simulation.

The sim-to-real gap
The difference between simulated and physical behavior is called the sim-to-real gap. Physics parameters, camera models, actuator delays, object friction, sensor noise, and calibration errors all contribute. Common mitigation strategies include:
- Domain randomization: Vary lighting, textures, object dimensions, poses, friction, latency, and sensor noise during simulation.
- System identification: Measure the real robot’s dynamics and tune the simulator to match them.
- Sensor-realistic inputs: Train with camera effects, occlusion, missing data, and timing delays rather than idealized observations.
- Mixed data: Combine synthetic trajectories with demonstrations or corrective data collected on the physical robot.
- Staged transfer: Begin with slow, constrained motions and progressively widen the operating envelope after each safety check.
A policy that succeeds in simulation is evidence about that simulated environment. It is not, by itself, proof of safe or reliable behavior on a real robot.
Example: teaching an SO-101 to sort centrifuge vials
NVIDIA’s SO-101 learning path presents a concrete demonstration: an approachable robot arm is trained to pick up centrifuge vials scattered on a table and place them in a rack. The workflow combines teleoperation data, simulation, and a policy that receives a language instruction along with camera observations and joint feedback, then outputs motor positions.
- Collect demonstrations: A person teleoperates the arm through vial pickups and placements, producing example trajectories.
- Build the learning environment: The task is represented in simulation with a table, scattered vials, a rack, robot geometry, and sensors.
- Train or evaluate the policy: The policy learns to associate the instruction and observations with a grasp-and-place sequence.
- Transfer to hardware: The same task is attempted with real cameras, joints, gripper mechanics, and physical vials.
- Inspect failures: Developers look for missed grasps, collisions, unstable placements, and observation loss, then add data or adjust the policy and controller.
The course explicitly presents the SO-101 as an approachable learning platform, not a production robot. The demonstration therefore shows how a physical-AI learning pipeline can be assembled; it does not establish readiness for unsupervised laboratory work or general-purpose manipulation.
Physical AI versus generative AI
Generative AI usually creates content—text, images, audio, code, or other digital outputs—from a prompt or context. Physical AI may use generative models, but its defining requirement is a connection to sensing and action in the physical world.
| Dimension | Generative AI | Physical AI |
|---|---|---|
| Primary output | Digital content or prediction | Commands that change a physical system |
| Typical inputs | Text, images, audio, files, or structured data | Camera, depth, joint, force, tactile, and task inputs |
| Main uncertainties | Factuality, bias, prompt ambiguity, distribution shift | Those issues plus geometry, contact, latency, friction, occlusion, and hardware faults |
| Feedback | Often supplied by a user or software evaluation | Continuously supplied by sensors and the physical outcome |
| Failure consequence | Incorrect or misleading digital content | Damaged objects, collisions, downtime, or injury risk, depending on the application |
The boundary is not absolute. A generative model can plan a robot task, and a physical robot can generate language. The distinction is whether the AI is operationally coupled to a body that perceives and affects its environment.

Occlusion and incomplete perception
Objects disappear behind the gripper, another object, or a person. A policy trained only on unobstructed views can lose track of the target. Use alternate viewpoints, temporal memory, tactile or force feedback, deliberate re-observation, and a safe pause when confidence falls.
Contact and grasp uncertainty
Small changes in friction, object weight, or grasp angle can turn a successful pickup into a slip. Grasp verification, force limits, compliant control, and recovery motions are more useful than assuming the simulator’s contact model is exact.
Timing and calibration errors
Camera exposure, network delay, motor response, and inaccurate joint calibration can make a policy act on stale information. Synchronize timestamps, measure end-to-end latency, recalibrate after mechanical changes, and test at the speeds used in deployment.

Safety and accountability
Physical systems need layered controls around the learned policy: workspace limits, speed and force caps, collision monitoring, emergency stops, guarded testing, and a clear operator override. A high-level policy should not be the only barrier between an uncertain prediction and a moving mechanism.
What physical AI can and cannot claim today
Physical AI is a useful umbrella for embodied systems that connect perception, task reasoning, learning, and actuation. It explains why robot development differs from training software-only models: every policy must survive noisy sensors, changing geometry, contact, and real consequences.
At the same time, the term does not guarantee human-like understanding, broad generalization, production reliability, or safety. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang described physical AI in a company newsroom announcement as “models that understand the real world, reason and plan actions.” That statement is promotional language from a vendor executive, not an independent performance assessment. The strongest evidence remains task-specific testing on the actual robot, in the actual environment, with documented failure and safety handling.

Does physical AI require a humanoid robot?
No. A robotic arm, mobile robot, drone, or other actuated machine qualifies when it senses its environment and uses AI to influence that environment. Humanoid form is optional.
Is every robot an example of physical AI?
No. A fixed automation sequence can move a robot without AI. Physical AI generally refers to systems that use learned or reasoning-based policies to connect observations and task goals to actions.
Can simulation prove that a robot is safe?
No. Simulation can expose scenarios and reduce some development risk, but differences in sensing, contact, timing, and mechanics require validation on the physical hardware.
Do I need an SO-101 kit to learn physical AI?
No. The SO-101 is used in NVIDIA’s educational example as an approachable learning platform. You can study the perception, policy, simulation, and control concepts without purchasing that hardware.
