Physical AI is an umbrella term for AI-enabled systems that perceive conditions in the physical world, reason about them, and perform or coordinate actions. Robots are important examples, but the category can also include autonomous vehicles, intelligent cameras, and smart-space systems. The term describes what the AI does in the world; it does not, by itself, say whether the system is a robot, connected to the internet, or running its models locally.

IoT, robotics, and edge AI describe different dimensions of a system. IoT emphasizes networked devices that interact with physical entities. Robotics emphasizes actuated mechanisms with some autonomy. Edge AI emphasizes where machine-learning computation occurs. A single warehouse system can fit all four descriptions at once.

The four terms at a glance

Term What it mainly describes Typical physical-world role What the label does not establish
Physical AI AI capability in a physical-world system: perception, reasoning and action A robot, vehicle or smart-space system interpreting conditions and acting or coordinating action That inference runs locally, that the system is internet-connected, or that it is a robot
IoT Connected devices and systems, often with sensors, actuators and network interfaces Collecting, exchanging or using data from physical entities That the device uses advanced AI or adapts its behaviour autonomously
Robotics Robots and the engineering field around them An actuated mechanism performing locomotion, manipulation or positioning with some autonomy That the robot uses AI, learns, or connects to an IoT platform
Edge AI The location of AI computation: on or near the device generating data Local inference in a camera, gateway, phone, vehicle or other device That the system takes physical action or even interacts with the physical world

These are overlapping labels, not mutually exclusive product categories. A mobile warehouse robot may be a robot, use physical AI for perception and adaptive action, exchange data with an IoT platform and run time-critical inference at the edge.

What “physical AI” means

NVIDIA’s glossary defines physical AI as systems such as cameras, robots and self-driving cars that “perceive, understand, reason, and perform or orchestrate complex actions in the physical world.” That is a useful working definition, but it is a vendor description rather than a universally settled industry standard.

The phrase focuses on an AI system’s relationship with the physical environment. It must obtain information about real conditions, interpret that information, and produce an action or coordinate an action. The action may be direct—such as a robot moving an arm—or supervisory, such as a camera system assigning routes to vehicles in a facility.

The core loop

  1. Perception: Sensors collect images, depth, audio, position, force, temperature or other observations.
  2. Interpretation: Models identify objects, people, surfaces, events and the current state of the environment.
  3. Reasoning and planning: Software selects a response under goals, constraints and uncertainty.
  4. Actuation or orchestration: The system moves a mechanism, changes a control setting, alerts a human or coordinates another machine.
  5. Feedback: New sensor readings show whether the action worked, allowing the next decision to account for a changing environment.

This closed loop separates physical AI from software that only classifies an uploaded file. A model that labels a photograph can be useful AI, but it is not physical AI merely because the photograph depicts a physical object.

Simulation and synthetic data

NVIDIA’s development guidance highlights physically accurate simulation, synthetic data and training or validating robot policies in simulation before deployment. Those techniques can reduce the cost and risk of collecting real-world data. They are approaches used in some physical-AI programs, not requirements that every physical-AI system must meet.

Is physical AI a formal standard?

Terminology is still developing. The IEEE P4501 project page describes an active project for a framework and requirements for physical artificial intelligence in manufacturing, covering terminology for sensing, cognition, decision-making and actuation as well as operational requirements and use cases. The page reports approval of the project request on May 14, 2026, and lists its status as “Active PAR.” That means it is a standards project in progress, not an approved, published standard. Definitions and scope may therefore evolve.

How physical AI differs from IoT

IoT is primarily about connected components and their interaction with physical entities. NIST’s IoT FAQ, quoting NIST IR 8316, says a system must contain networked IoT components and interact with a physical entity through sensors or actuators within those components. NIST also notes that there is no single widely accepted definition of IoT; its work on IoT and cyber-physical systems describes connected logical, physical and human components whose definitions have increasingly converged.

The practical distinction is emphasis:

  • IoT asks: Which devices are connected, what data do they exchange, and how do they sense or affect a physical entity?
  • Physical AI asks: How does an AI system understand changing physical conditions and decide or coordinate what should happen next?

A connected temperature sensor that reports readings to a cloud dashboard is IoT. It does not automatically use AI, adapt its behaviour or control equipment. It becomes part of a physical-AI application when AI interprets the readings in context and that interpretation drives or coordinates a physical response—for example, adjusting industrial cooling while accounting for load, safety limits and other sensors. That example combines NIST’s IoT criteria with the physical-AI definition; IoT connectivity remains a supporting capability, not the defining feature of physical AI.

How physical AI differs from robotics

Robotics concerns the machine and the engineering discipline built around it. The International Federation of Robotics, reporting the ISO 8373:2021 vocabulary, describes a robot as a “programmed actuated mechanism with a degree of autonomy, to perform locomotion, manipulation or positioning.”

Physical AI concerns AI-enabled perception, reasoning and action in the physical world. The labels overlap when an AI-enabled robot senses its surroundings and changes its behaviour. They are not synonyms:

  • A robot can follow fixed programmed trajectories with no machine-learning model. It is robotics, but calling it physical AI would require evidence of AI-based physical perception, reasoning or action.
  • A self-driving vehicle can fit physical AI even though discussions of robotics may or may not classify that vehicle as a robot, depending on the context.
  • A fixed camera system can perceive activity and coordinate routes in a smart space without being an actuated robot at all.

“Robot” therefore identifies an embodied, actuated mechanism. “Physical AI” identifies the kind of intelligent capability operating in, or coordinating, the physical environment.

How physical AI differs from edge AI

Edge AI describes deployment location. IEEE’s edge-AI overview defines it as running machine-learning models on or near the device that generates the data rather than in a centralized cloud data centre. Edge hardware has bounded memory, processing and energy budgets.

NVIDIA’s 2022 explanation identifies lower latency, reduced bandwidth use and privacy as common reasons to process data locally. A vehicle may need an immediate braking decision even when a cloud connection is slow or unavailable; a camera may analyse video locally rather than continuously uploading it.

Edge and physical answer different questions:

  • Edge: Where does inference run?
  • Physical: Is the AI interpreting and acting in the physical world?

A physical-AI robot may run obstacle detection and control models onboard while sending summaries to a remote service. It may therefore use edge AI plus cloud or data-centre computation. Conversely, an edge-AI camera can detect a face, count objects or filter audio locally without controlling an actuator or coordinating a physical process. Local inference alone does not make a system physical AI.

Examples: applying the labels to real systems

Warehouse mobile robot

A mobile robot uses cameras, lidar or other sensors to map its surroundings, avoid obstacles and choose a route. It is a robotics system under the ISO-derived definition. When AI performs perception and adapts movement to uncertain, changing conditions, it is also a physical-AI system. If it exchanges inventory and fleet data over a network, it participates in IoT; if route or perception models run on the robot, those components are edge AI.

Robot arm changing its grasp

An arm that detects an object’s position and selects a suitable grasp combines robotics with physical AI. The mechanism supplies actuation; AI supplies perception and decision-making. A network connection or local inference may be present, but neither is implied by the basic example.

Autonomous vehicle

A self-driving vehicle senses road conditions, estimates what other road users may do, plans a manoeuvre and controls steering or speed. That is a clear physical-AI example in NVIDIA’s description. Some of the processing may be edge AI because it occurs in the vehicle, while training, mapping or fleet analysis may use remote systems.

Fixed smart-space camera

A camera can track people, vehicles or robots and feed a system that coordinates routes, access or safety responses. NVIDIA includes cameras and smart spaces in its physical-AI examples. The camera itself need not be a robot: it may sense and orchestrate actions without locomotion or manipulation.

Connected temperature sensor

A networked sensor that measures temperature and reports readings is an IoT device under NIST’s network-and-physical-interaction framing. It is not automatically AI-enabled. If an AI service analyses its readings alongside occupancy, equipment state and weather, then changes cooling controls or directs a technician, the larger application can include physical AI.

A practical way to classify a system

When a product description uses several of these terms, classify each dimension separately rather than choosing one label:

  1. Identify the physical entity: Is the system sensing or affecting a machine, vehicle, person, building or environment?
  2. Check for actuation or orchestration: Does it move hardware, change a control, issue a safety response or coordinate another system?
  3. Separate programmed control from AI: Is a learned model interpreting uncertain conditions or selecting actions, or is the behaviour entirely fixed?
  4. Check connectivity: Are components networked and exchanging data? If so, IoT may describe the system, regardless of whether AI is present.
  5. Locate computation: Does inference run on the sensor, a nearby gateway, a vehicle, a phone, a private server or a cloud service? “Edge” applies when it runs on or near the data source.
  6. Check embodiment: Is there a programmed, actuated mechanism performing locomotion, manipulation or positioning? If yes, robotics is relevant.

This method avoids common category errors. “AI-powered” does not establish physical action. “Connected” does not establish intelligence. “Autonomous” does not establish machine learning. “On-device” does not establish a physical-world task.

Why the distinctions matter in design and deployment

Safety and validation

Physical systems can injure people, damage equipment or create cascading failures. A model that performs well on a static benchmark may still fail when lighting, friction, traffic, weather or human behaviour changes. Physical-AI projects therefore need tests that include sensor failure, uncertainty, unusual object poses, latency and recovery behaviour. Simulation can help exercise rare situations, but deployment validation must account for the actual hardware and environment.

Latency and reliability

Edge processing can shorten the path from sensor to decision and keep core functions available during network outages. Remote processing can provide more computing capacity and centralized updates. Many systems divide work: safety-critical perception and control stay local, while fleet learning, historical analysis or complex planning use remote infrastructure.

Data and privacy

IoT deployments create data flows among devices, gateways, services and people. Edge processing can limit what leaves a site, but it does not remove the need for access control, update management, secure communications and retention policies. Physical-AI deployments also need clear rules for sensor data involving workers, customers or bystanders.

Interoperability

A system may combine robot controllers, cameras, IoT sensors, edge computers and cloud services from different suppliers. Defining each component by capability—sensing, inference, networking, actuation and coordination—makes interfaces and failure boundaries clearer than using “AI” as a catch-all label.

Where to learn more

For readers who want hands-on depth, NVIDIA’s Physical AI Learning catalog lists free, self-paced material covering robot simulation, robot-policy training, ROS 2 and real robots, and sim-to-real workflows. These courses are a learning resource, not evidence that every physical-AI system must use a particular simulator, framework or hardware stack.

Bottom line

Physical AI is best understood as AI that perceives, reasons about and acts in the physical world. Robotics names the actuated machines; IoT names connected interaction with physical entities; edge AI names where computation runs. The same deployment can use all four, but each term answers a different question. Keep those dimensions separate and ask specifically about sensing, intelligence, connectivity, actuation and inference location before accepting a broad technology label.
