Phobos is Mars’s small inner moon and the main target of Japan’s Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission. It is difficult to explore because scientists still lack sustained close-up measurements, its gravity is extraordinarily weak, and a spacecraft must navigate the entire Mars system before landing, sampling, departing and returning material to Earth.
MMX is planned to launch in Japanese fiscal year (JFY) 2026, reach Mars in 2027, operate through 2030 and return a sample capsule for recovery in Australia in JFY 2031. Those are schedules, not completed events.
Phobos in one sentence
Phobos is Mars’s small inner moon, but its scientific importance is much larger than its size. Researchers do not yet know whether it formed from debris blasted off Mars by a giant impact or whether Mars captured it as an asteroid. The distinction would reveal how the Martian moons and the Mars system evolved.

JAXA’s MMX mission is designed to investigate that question with remote sensing, close operations around Phobos and Deimos, a rover survey, direct sampling and a return capsule. JAXA project manager Yasuhiro Kawakatsu has described Phobos as “an unexplored frontier for humankind.”

Why Phobos’s origin is still unsettled
Two broad explanations remain open:
- Impact-debris origin: a large collision with Mars could have placed rocky material into orbit, where it later assembled into the moons.
- Captured-asteroid origin: Phobos and possibly Deimos could be bodies that formed elsewhere and were later trapped by Mars’s gravity.
These hypotheses predict different relationships between Phobos, Mars and asteroid material. A moon made from Martian impact debris might share chemical or mineral clues with Mars, while a captured asteroid could preserve a composition unlike local Martian rock. Remote images and spectra can narrow the possibilities, but returned samples provide a much stronger way to test them.
MMX therefore is not simply a mission to photograph an unusual moon. Its observations and samples are intended to determine how the moons formed and how the Mars–Phobos–Deimos system changed over time.
Why knowledge from afar is limited
Phobos has been observed by spacecraft, but no mission has spent a long period operating close to the Martian moons. Much of what is known comes from flyby measurements rather than a sustained campaign at the surface or in a close, stable orbit.

That gap affects every design decision. Before a spacecraft attempts a landing or sample collection, mission planners need to understand the terrain, the behavior of loose regolith, the shape of the local environment and the way the spacecraft will interact with a body that has almost no gravity. Limited close-range history means those conditions cannot be assumed from a large library of previous surface measurements.
How weak gravity changes exploration
ESA gives a useful comparison: the Idefix rover has a mass of 25 kilograms, but on Phobos its weight would be equivalent to about 15 grams on Earth. The rover does not lose mass; only the gravitational force acting on it is tiny.

That difference changes ordinary surface engineering:
- Wheels have little normal force pressing them into the ground, so available traction is limited.
- A push from a wheel, drill or sampling mechanism can produce a noticeable reaction on the rover itself.
- Loose grains may not behave as they do under terrestrial gravity when disturbed.
- A landing system must control contact without relying on the firm, predictable settling expected on a large planet.
- Small navigation or attitude errors can have outsized consequences when the vehicle is moving slowly above a weakly attracting surface.
These are engineering consequences of the documented low-gravity environment, not reports of a maneuver already completed on Phobos. MMX addresses the uncertainty by sending Idefix to examine the regolith’s physical properties before the main spacecraft performs its sampling operation.

The mission has to coordinate several distinct phases:
- Launch from Earth aboard the H3 rocket in JFY 2026.
- Travel to Mars and arrive in 2027 after roughly a year in transit.
- Conduct observations around Phobos and visit Deimos.
- Deploy and operate the Idefix rover to survey Phobos’s surface.
- Perform close navigation, landing and sample collection at Phobos.
- Store the material, depart the Mars sphere in 2030 and begin the return trajectory.
- Separate the sample capsule, re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and recover it in Australia in JFY 2031.
JAXA identifies guidance and navigation, orbit control, landing, thermal control, communications, propulsion and sampling as separate mission systems. A failure in any one of them can affect the others: accurate navigation is needed for proximity operations, surface contact depends on the gravity and terrain model, and the collected material must remain secured through departure and Earth return.
How MMX will investigate Phobos
Remote observations before and around surface work
MMX carries instruments to study the moon from the spacecraft. They include cameras for imaging, topography measurements, near-infrared observations of composition, and sensors for dust, ions and radiation around the Mars system.

NASA’s MEGANE instrument will measure neutrons and gamma rays emitted from Phobos. Those emissions allow scientists to infer the elemental composition of the surface, giving a chemical context that images alone cannot provide.

Idefix is a 25-kilogram rover intended to move across Phobos and investigate how its surface material behaves. JAXA says the survey will help characterize the regolith, reduce risk for the spacecraft’s landing and sampling work, and provide calibration data for the mission’s measurements.
The rover’s role is therefore more than reconnaissance. Its observations can inform decisions about where and how to collect material, while also helping scientists interpret data gathered from orbit and from the returned sample.
Two complementary sampling methods
MMX carries two ways to acquire Phobos material:

The two methods address different physical conditions. Coring seeks a shallow subsurface sample, while pneumatic collection gathers loose grains without requiring the same type of mechanical penetration. Using both increases the scientific range of the returned material and provides alternatives if one technique encounters an unexpected surface condition.
Why collecting a sample is only part of the challenge
Sampling on Phobos must be followed by containment, storage and transport through deep space. The spacecraft then has to leave the Mars environment, carry the sample toward Earth and release a capsule that can survive atmospheric entry. ESA says the capsule is designed for recovery in Australia and transfer to JAXA’s Institute of Space and Astronautical Science facility.

JAXA’s stated goal is more than 10 grams of Phobos material. That quantity is a mission plan, not a result already achieved. The scientific value depends not only on mass but also on what parts of the surface and shallow subsurface are represented, how cleanly the material is handled and how well its location and collection conditions are documented.

JAXA’s public schedule was current as of 13 October 2026. Launch, arrival, operations and recovery dates can change as the mission develops, so they should be read as planned milestones rather than completed events.

An uncertain target
Phobos is scientifically important precisely because its origin and material are unresolved. That uncertainty makes it harder to select the best sampling site and to predict how the ground will respond to a rover, landing system or corer.
Very little gravitational margin
On a large world, contact forces are dominated by the body’s gravity. On Phobos, the rover’s effective weight is so small that driving, anchoring, drilling and gas-assisted collection must be treated as coupled spacecraft-dynamics problems. A tool that pushes into the surface also pushes back on the vehicle.
Navigation across several regimes
MMX must travel between Earth and Mars, operate near two small moons, control its orbit around a changing gravitational environment and perform a precise surface interaction. Guidance and navigation are not isolated from science activities; they determine whether the spacecraft can safely reach the selected location and return with the sample.

A long chain of mission-critical events
The sample-return objective adds launch, cruise, Mars arrival, observations, rover deployment, landing, collection, storage, departure, Earth approach, atmospheric entry and recovery. The mission succeeds scientifically only if this entire chain works well enough to preserve both the material and the context in which it was collected.
What MMX could resolve
If the returned material and remote observations show strong links to Martian material, the impact-debris explanation would gain support. If the chemistry and physical properties instead resemble an asteroid population formed away from Mars, capture would become more plausible. The result could also be more complex: Phobos may contain evidence of mixing, alteration or an origin that does not fit either simple description.
MEGANE’s elemental measurements, the spacecraft’s topography and spectral data, Idefix’s regolith observations and the laboratory study of returned grains are designed to be interpreted together. No single image, spectrum or grain can answer the formation question alone.
How to interpret mission updates
Reports about MMX should distinguish between a planned capability and a completed result. “Will collect” describes the mission design; it does not mean a sample has already been obtained. Likewise, a scheduled 2031 capsule recovery is not evidence that the return has occurred.
The most meaningful milestones will be confirmed launch, Mars arrival, successful Phobos proximity operations, Idefix deployment, verified sample acquisition, departure from the Mars sphere and capsule recovery. Each step removes a different category of uncertainty: transportation, navigation, surface interaction, collection, containment or Earth return.
Why Phobos matters beyond one mission
Phobos offers a rare test of how small bodies behave in the gravitational environment of a planet. Understanding its composition and origin can improve models of Mars’s history, the evolution of planetary satellite systems and the difference between an asteroid captured by a planet and a moon assembled from planetary debris.
Its exploration is difficult because the moon combines all of the hardest conditions at once: incomplete prior measurements, extremely weak gravity, demanding proximity navigation, delicate surface operations and a sample that must survive a round trip to Earth. MMX is designed to turn those constraints into a coordinated investigation rather than treating them as separate problems.
