Phantom Blade Zero is an upcoming dark wuxia action RPG from S-GAME. It combines Chinese martial-arts fiction, punk-fantasy technology and folk horror in a connected but non-open-world setting called the Phantom World. You play Soul, a swordsman with 66 days to live, using a large, weapon-specific arsenal to uncover why he was framed for killing his master. The game is scheduled for October 29, 2026 (October 28 in the US and select regions), and the details below describe officially announced features rather than a finished review.
What is Phantom Blade Zero?
Phantom Blade Zero is built around fast, weapon-led action rather than a traditional party-based role-playing system. S-GAME describes its style as “Kungfupunk”: traditional martial arts combined with punk fantasy, strange machinery and a darker supernatural atmosphere. PlayStation categorizes it as a dark wuxia action RPG running on Unreal Engine 5.
Wuxia is a Chinese genre of heroic martial-arts fiction and cinema. Its stories usually follow skilled wanderers, rival schools, personal honor, loyalty and conspiracies in a stylized martial world. Phantom Blade Zero uses those conventions, but it is not presented as a historically realistic depiction of China. Its Wulin is an invented setting with fantasy and folk-horror elements.
The announced design has four connected pillars:
- A revenge-and-conspiracy story centered on Soul.
- Combos and techniques that change with the weapon you equip.
- Handcrafted regions linked into a nonlinear Phantom World.
- Three modes aimed at different relationships with difficulty and narrative pressure.
Because the game had not launched as of October 13, 2026, its final performance, balance, combat feel and story quality remain unverified. Official descriptions also cannot guarantee that every announced feature will ship unchanged.

What is the story of Phantom Blade Zero?
Soul has 66 days to live
You control Soul, a swordsman whose heart has been wounded and who has only 66 days remaining. He is blamed for murdering his master and becomes a hunted fugitive across the Wulin. His immediate goals are survival, finding a cure and discovering who engineered the betrayal.
The Order’s betrayal and the underworld
S-GAME’s August 2026 deep dive adds that The Order betrays Soul and leaves him for dead. He turns to the underworld while searching for a way to extend his life, drawing him into a conspiracy that threatens the wider martial world. The premise creates a literal countdown without revealing how Soul’s condition is ultimately explained.
Side quests can change what you learn
Citizens encountered during the journey may need help. Side-quest interactions can open additional story paths and provide context about the Wulin, rather than functioning only as detached combat errands. The official material does not disclose the conspirators, the ending or the final explanation for Soul’s illness, so those details should not be treated as known.
How does combat work in Phantom Blade Zero?
A large, weapon-driven moveset
S-GAME advertises more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons known as Phantom Edges. Weapons can be upgraded and paired with accessories. The developer also says upgrades can be reforged so that their materials are recovered and reinvested, allowing experimentation without permanently wasting resources. Some defeated enemies expand the arsenal.

- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
PlayStation describes seamless combos that are easy to learn but rewarding to master. S-GAME adds weapon-specific techniques, summons and ranged options, suggesting that changing equipment is intended to alter how Soul approaches encounters rather than merely changing damage numbers.
| Announced combat element | What it means |
|---|---|
| Main weapons | More than 30, with distinct techniques and upgrade paths. |
| Phantom Edges | 25 secondary weapons that supplement Soul’s primary weapon. |
| Accessories | Equipment that can be paired with weapons to customize a build. |
| Reforging | Upgrades can be reset to recover materials for reinvestment. |
| Additional tools | Official descriptions mention summons and ranged options alongside melee attacks. |
Examples of the announced arsenal
The deep-dive recap gives several examples that show how varied the equipment is intended to be:
- Drunken Sword: lets Soul dodge and weave while building drunken energy.
- Twin blades: combine a long sword with an orbiting blade.
- Soft Snake Sword: uses a flexible blade unlike a conventional rigid sword.
- Iron fists: shift encounters toward close-range hand-to-hand attacks.
- Tiger Cannon: provides a heavy ranged option.
- Flaming Mane mask: demonstrates that combat tools can include unusual equipment beyond ordinary blades.
These examples illustrate the advertised variety; they do not establish that every weapon has identical timing, difficulty or effectiveness. Those qualities require the released game to evaluate.
Martial-arts choreography and performers
S-GAME says motion capture and kung-fu choreography are designed to evoke martial-arts cinema. Donnie Yen is a creative consultant and performs Mó Yuan through facial and motion capture. That participation describes the production and presentation; it is not evidence of final combat responsiveness or balance.
Rank #3
- Wireless Controller: The controller connects wirelessly via Bluetooth for convenience.
- DualSense Technology: Features advanced haptic feedback and adaptive trigger buttons for immersive gaming.
- Gray Camouflage Design: Stylish and unique design with a gray camouflage pattern.
- 17 Buttons: Includes 12 main buttons and 5 customizable buttons for versatile gameplay.
- PlayStation 5 Compatible: Works with all PlayStation 5 games and accessories.
Is Phantom Blade Zero open world?
No. The official description presents Phantom Blade Zero as a connected, nonlinear world rather than an open-world game. Epic Games Store’s recap of S-GAME’s deep dive identifies eight regions in the Phantom World. These areas are described as handcrafted and linked, with secrets, side quests, rare treasures, clues and environmental variety.
“Connected” should not be read as a promise of one seamless map or unlimited traversal. The announced structure is closer to a set of authored regions with multiple ways to investigate them. Citizens can offer tasks, and some side quests may open story paths, so exploration can affect what context or routes the player discovers.
What to expect while exploring
- Eight announced regions within the Phantom World.
- Nonlinear routes and optional discoveries instead of a single prescribed path.
- Handcrafted secrets, clues, treasures and environmental details.
- Side quests that may add narrative information or unlock another story route.
What are the difficulty modes?
S-GAME has announced three modes with different goals. Their final tuning and accessibility should be judged after launch, but the intended distinctions are clear.
| Mode | Announced focus | Distinctive rule or feature |
|---|---|---|
| Wayfarer | Players who primarily want to enjoy the story. | A more approachable entry point according to the developer’s description. |
| Hellwalker | Players seeking a tougher action challenge. | Higher difficulty with more advanced, adaptive enemy intelligence. |
| Sixty-Six Days | A demanding mode built around Soul’s limited lifespan. | Deaths cost a day, according to Epic Games Store’s recap. |
The mode names do not by themselves establish exact damage values, checkpoint rules or how enemy adaptation works. If you are choosing before release, Wayfarer is the stated story-focused option; Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days are for players who specifically want additional pressure.

When does Phantom Blade Zero come out?
S-GAME moved the announced release from September 9 to October 29, 2026. In its June 2, 2026 letter, the company described the change as a 50-day delay intended to allow further improvements and polish, while acknowledging that “A 50-day delay cannot solve everything.” The official product listing gives October 29, with October 28 shown for the United States and select regions. Regional storefronts should be checked close to launch because release times and dates can vary.
What platforms is Phantom Blade Zero on?
PlayStation 5 is confirmed on the official PlayStation product page. Official PC store references include Steam and Epic Games Store. The supplied announcements do not establish a launch version for other consoles, so those platforms should not be assumed.
On PS5, the product page lists support for DualSense vibration, adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and Tempest 3D AudioTech. These are platform features, not requirements: the game can be played without purchasing an additional controller.
