Phantom Blade Zero is an upcoming dark wuxia action RPG from S-GAME, built in Unreal Engine 5 for PlayStation 5 and PC. It combines traditional martial-arts drama with fantasy, folk horror, mechanical prosthetics and what the developer calls “kungfupunk.” Its announced combat focuses on weapon variety, upgradeable builds, combo-based fighting and selectable difficulty modes.
The game has not yet been independently evaluated here, so descriptions of combat feel, balance, performance and overall quality should be read as S-GAME and platform-holder specifications rather than review findings.
What is Phantom Blade Zero?
Phantom Blade Zero is a single-player action RPG being developed by S-GAME. PlayStation describes it as “a dark wuxia action RPG powered by Unreal Engine 5.” Wuxia is the tradition of Chinese martial-arts storytelling that emphasizes wandering swordsmen, rival schools, loyalty, betrayal and moral choice. S-GAME layers that foundation with fantasy and folk-horror elements instead of presenting a purely historical martial-arts world.

It is the publisher’s framing rather than an established genre category. Steam includes “Souls-like” as a user-defined tag, but S-GAME and PlayStation officially present the game as a wuxia action RPG or action RPG; calling it a Soulslike as a settled classification would go beyond the published descriptions.

At its most practical, Phantom Blade Zero is built around three questions: how you want to fight, how you develop your equipment, and how much challenge you want from the enemies. The announced systems support multiple weapons, secondary tools, accessories, weapon reforging and three named difficulty settings.
What is the story?
You play Soul, a swordsman whose heart has been wounded and who has only 66 days left to live. He is framed for murdering his master, making him a target of the Wulin—the martial world that governs the game’s conflicts and alliances. While hunted, Soul investigates a conspiracy that threatens that world.
The official Steam synopsis adds that Soul’s journey is also a search for a heart. It describes a story that brings love, hatred, kindness and vengeance into the same pursuit. Those details establish the premise and emotional themes without revealing the full chain of events, character identities or ending. The available official material does not support a more detailed plot summary, so treating the 66-day deadline, the accusation and the conspiracy as the core setup is the safest spoiler-light explanation.

In wuxia fiction, the Wulin is the wider community of martial artists, schools, wanderers and factions operating outside ordinary court or military structures. S-GAME’s description presents its Wulin as a place filled with conflict and intrigue, where Soul encounters people in need while pursuing his own survival and investigation. That framing suggests a world shaped by personal obligations as much as by the central conspiracy, although the published material does not specify how many optional stories or side activities the finished game will contain.

What does the setting look and sound like?
Phantom Blade Zero’s setting is intentionally hybrid. Chinese-inspired architecture, clothing and martial-arts traditions provide the cultural base; fantasy and folk horror add supernatural unease; industrial ruins and prosthetic technology push the world toward an anachronistic, punk-inflected future. S-GAME also points to modern rock music as part of the presentation, so the tone is not limited to period instruments or historical realism.
The term “kungfupunk” helps explain why a sword fight may sit beside mechanical limbs, factory-like ruins or other industrial imagery. It should not be read as a promise of a particular historical era. Instead, it describes the deliberate collision of wuxia conventions with fantasy technology and horror atmosphere.
How is combat supposed to work?
S-GAME and PlayStation describe a weapon-driven action system built around extensive equipment choices, combos, upgrades and build decisions. S-GAME calls the combos “seamless” and says they are easy to learn while rewarding mastery. That is promotional language: no independent hands-on assessment has established the final responsiveness, animation quality, balance, frame rate or how satisfying the system remains across a full playthrough.

Main weapons and Phantom Edges
The most specific published count comes from S-GAME founder and CEO Soulframe Liang’s August 17, 2026 PlayStation Blog article: more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons known as Phantom Edges. The PlayStation US page and Steam listing use the broader wording “30-plus” primary weapons and “20-plus” Phantom Edges. Those statements are compatible lower-bound descriptions, but the Blog is the clearest source for the 25-weapon Phantom Edge figure. The final in-game total could still change before or after launch.

Main weapons appear to define Soul’s primary fighting style, while Phantom Edges provide secondary options. The official descriptions do not publish a complete weapon list or explain every category, so it would be premature to assign specific damage types, rarity tiers or fixed roles to individual weapons.
Upgrades, accessories and builds
Players can upgrade weapons and pair them with accessories. Together, those systems are intended to support different builds rather than a single mandatory loadout. S-GAME also says an upgraded weapon can be reforged to recover materials. Reforging therefore functions as a way to reclaim upgrade resources when you want to change direction, although the published material does not state whether every resource is returned or whether reforging has a cost.
The descriptions also mention the ability to summon help. They do not establish whether assistance comes from story characters, temporary allies, online players or another system, so the feature should be understood only as an announced support option until S-GAME publishes more rules.

Three announced difficulty modes
The PlayStation Blog names three choices:

The three names show that difficulty can be selected to suit different priorities. They do not prove how hard the finished game feels, whether settings can be changed during a playthrough, or whether trophies and rewards vary by mode.

When does Phantom Blade Zero release?
The current general release date listed by S-GAME is October 29, 2026. The PlayStation Blog identifies October 28 for the United States and select regions, and Steam currently shows October 28. Storefront timing can vary by territory and may be revised, so check the local PlayStation or Steam listing close to launch.
The date follows a delay from September 9. In a June 2, 2026 developer letter, S-GAME CEO and creator Soulframe wrote, “A 50-day delay cannot solve everything,” explaining that the move was intended to allow further improvements. The later October listings are the current schedule; the earlier September date is no longer current.
Which platforms support it?
Official listings cover PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam. No Xbox, Nintendo or previous-generation PlayStation version is identified in the published platform information. PC players should use the Steam requirements below rather than assume that any computer capable of running another Unreal Engine 5 game will be sufficient.

PS5 audio and controller features
On PS5, PlayStation lists adaptive triggers and haptic feedback through the DualSense controller. The listing also supports Tempest 3D AudioTech. PlayStation says 3D audio can work through built-in television speakers or analogue/USB stereo headphones when the system is configured for it. A DualSense controller is therefore a relevant way to use the listed features, but no additional hardware is identified as mandatory.

What editions are available?
The US PlayStation listing offers Standard and Digital Deluxe editions. The Digital Deluxe package lists the Wulin Legend and Blood-Steel Form appearances, a digital artbook and a digital soundtrack.
The early-unlock pre-order accessory and the Legacy outfit are also described as obtainable through in-game progression. They should not be treated as permanently exclusive pre-order content. Prices, regional availability and the exact contents of each storefront package can change, so verify the local listing before purchasing.
What PC hardware does Steam require?
Steam publishes the following minimum configuration for the PC version:

These are the requirements and target published by Steam, not an independently measured benchmark. They do not guarantee a locked frame rate, identical image quality or the same result across every driver, laptop, desktop or graphics setting. Steam also does not establish from this information how much free SSD space the final installation will need.

Who is Phantom Blade Zero aimed at?
The disclosed design should interest players who want a stylized martial-arts setting rather than a conventional medieval fantasy world, and who value changing weapons and builds. The three difficulty names also indicate an attempt to accommodate both story-focused players and people seeking a tougher combat test. Those are design intentions, not proof that every audience will enjoy the finished game.
Players deciding between PS5 and PC have a straightforward choice: PS5 provides the listed DualSense and Tempest 3D AudioTech features, while PC buyers must meet the published Windows, processor, memory, GPU, DirectX 12 and SSD requirements. Anyone expecting a specific frame rate, co-op structure or Soulslike progression loop should wait for more detailed documentation or independent reviews rather than infer those features from the marketing terms.
Bottom line
Phantom Blade Zero is an upcoming S-GAME action RPG that uses wuxia storytelling as the foundation for a darker, technologically infused “kungfupunk” world.
