Permafrost has two meanings in this title. In earth science, it is ground that remains at or below 0°C for at least two consecutive years. Permafrost is also a fictional story-driven survival sandbox for PC. This guide explains the real frozen-ground feature first, then separates it from the game’s advertised cold, exploration, crafting, shelter, companion and co-op systems.
What is permafrost in earth science?
Permafrost is soil or rock—including its ice and organic material—that stays at or below 0°C for at least two consecutive years. The definition is based on measured ground temperature and duration. It does not require a particular amount of ice: permafrost can contain abundant ice or be effectively ice-free.
“Permanently frozen” is therefore an unreliable shorthand. Permafrost can thaw when heat penetrates the ground. The scientific term records a thermal condition over time, not a promise that the ground can never warm.
Permafrost is found beneath parts of the Arctic, sub-Arctic and high mountains, but it is not a uniform frozen sheet. The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reports thicknesses ranging from less than 1 meter to greater than 1,500 meters. Its geographic continuity is commonly described as continuous, discontinuous, sporadic or isolated, reflecting how much of a landscape is underlain by permafrost.

What is the active layer?
The active layer is the surface zone above permafrost that thaws during the warmer season and freezes again seasonally. Its depth is not fixed everywhere. Vegetation, snow, soil, moisture, surface disturbance, shading and local weather all affect how deeply summer heat travels.
Permafrost beneath the active layer can impede drainage. Water may remain near the surface, helping form wetlands, ponds, lakes and marshes even in otherwise cold environments. A wet surface does not by itself prove that permafrost is present; ground-temperature measurements and local geology are needed.
What happens when permafrost thaws?
Thaw is the progressive loss of ground ice as heat enters the soil or rock. The consequences depend on the amount and arrangement of ice, slope, water movement, vegetation, snow and human disturbance.
Settlement and thermokarst
When excess ice melts, the ground can settle unevenly. The resulting irregular surface is called thermokarst. Depressions may collect water, while formerly level ground can become difficult to build on or traverse.

Slumps and active-layer detachments
On slopes, thaw can weaken frozen material and trigger thaw slumps or active-layer detachments. These failures can move soil downslope, expose more ground to sunlight and alter streams or drainage paths.
Changing lakes and drainage
Thaw-created depressions may become thermokarst lakes. Elsewhere, melting ground ice can open a drainage route and drain an existing wet area. The outcome is controlled by local topography, ice distribution and hydrology; not every thawing site develops the same feature.
Vegetation and infrastructure damage
NSIDC describes tilted “drunken forest” trees as one visible sign of uneven thaw. The National Park Service’s permafrost-monitoring guidance also identifies slope instability, thaw settlement, drainage changes and infrastructure damage as important hazards. Roads, runways, buildings, pipelines and utilities can lose support when the ground settles or shifts.

- Ground temperature and depth: How cold is the ground, and at what depth is it measured?
- Ice content: Is the frozen material nearly ice-free, or does it contain thick ice lenses and wedges?
- Continuity: Is permafrost continuous, discontinuous, sporadic or isolated?
- Active-layer depth: How far does seasonal thaw reach?
- Drainage and moisture: Can water escape, or is it held above an impermeable frozen layer?
- Slope and terrain: Is the ground flat, or could thaw destabilize a hillside?
- Vegetation and snow: Do plants or an insulating snow cover reduce or increase heat transfer?
- Disturbance and construction: Have roads, buildings, fire or other activity changed the surface heat and water balance?
The National Park Service monitoring chapter identifies climate, terrain, hydrology, vegetation, geology and disturbance as interacting controls. That is why a regional label such as “Arctic permafrost” is not enough to determine the risk at a particular foundation or road.
What is Permafrost, the survival game?
Permafrost is a separate, fictional PC game set in a frozen, post-apocalyptic world. The official Steam listing describes it as a story-driven survival sandbox developed by SpaceRocket Games and published by Toplitz Productions. The listing gives an Early Access release date of October 9, 2026.
The game’s setting borrows the pressure of a world dominated by cold, but it is not a scientific model of real permafrost, active-layer behavior or climate processes. Its store-page copy summarizes the atmosphere with the line, “The cold is alive and ever-present.” That is marketing copy for the game’s fictional threat, not a statement about frozen-ground science.

The Steam description presents survival as a preparation-and-expedition cycle. Cold exposure is a constant concern, with frostbite, storms and creeping cold listed as threats. The advertised activities fit together as follows:

- Prepare for exposure. Manage the risks of leaving shelter in a world where cold and storms can become lethal.
- Explore. Travel through frozen cities and wilderness to locate resources, technology and routes forward.
- Hunt and scavenge. Obtain food and useful materials from the environment and abandoned locations.
- Craft and repair. Make equipment, repair machines and restore abandoned shelters rather than relying only on what you find intact.
- Expand your reach. Recover technology and repair systems to unlock or enable farther exploration.
- Build a shelter network. Establish more than a single safe room so expeditions can extend into the frozen map.
This is the feature set advertised by the store page. It should not be read as an independently verified account of balance, enemy behavior, performance or how punishing each system feels.
What does progression and shelter building involve?
Progression is described as exploration-gated. The player is expected to recover technology and fix systems before pushing deeper into the world, so reaching a new area is tied to both discovery and repair work. Restoring abandoned shelters and building a shelter network gives the expedition loop strategic structure: a trip is not only about collecting items, but also about creating places from which later trips can start.
The listing does not establish exact construction limits, resource recipes, temperature numbers, durability values or the order in which systems unlock. Those details can change during Early Access and should be checked against the current game build rather than assumed from the broad feature description.

Can you play with friends, and what does the dog do?
Single-player and co-op
The Steam page lists both single-player and online co-op. Co-op supports up to three friends, making the listed party size one to four players total. The listing does not specify whether every mission, shelter action or progression step is identical between solo and co-op, so those details should be confirmed in the current build.

Dog companion
A dog companion is advertised as able to scout, warn of danger and carry supplies. Those roles suggest practical expedition support rather than a purely cosmetic pet, but the store description does not provide exact carrying capacity, command controls, detection range or failure conditions.

The game is listed for Windows PC through Steam. The store page includes the following platform features and baseline requirements:

Use the word according to context. If the sentence discusses 0°C, two years, active layers, ground ice or thermokarst, it is describing the geoscience feature. If it discusses frostbite, storms, crafting, shelters, technology recovery, a dog or online co-op, it is describing the video game.
The connection is thematic rather than scientific. Real permafrost is a temperature-defined ground condition with highly variable ice, depth and continuity. The game uses a fictional frozen landscape as the setting for resource management, exploration and survival decisions.
What is established—and what remains unconfirmed?
The earth-science definition and thaw mechanisms are established in educational material from NSIDC, the IPCC glossary and National Park Service monitoring guidance. Those sources support the distinctions between permafrost and the active layer, the broad thickness range, and hazards such as settlement, slope failure and drainage change.
For the game, the reliable claims are the features explicitly advertised on its official Steam listing: the setting, survival threats, exploration, hunting, scavenging, crafting, repairs, shelter restoration, shelter networks, technology-gated progress, dog companion, single-player mode, co-op for up to three friends and listed Steam integrations. Hands-on gameplay testing, independent performance measurements and a lasting assessment of balance are not established by that listing.
