Optical chirality is the signed, local handedness of an electromagnetic field. It tells you whether the field’s electric and magnetic components are organized in one helical sense or its mirror image, not simply how much energy or brightness the field carries. Left- and right-handed circular polarization are opposite helicity states; a chiral molecule can absorb them at different rates, producing circular dichroism (CD).
This guide defines the quantity, explains the left/right convention, shows why circular polarization is chiral, and describes superchiral fields, measurements, and practical limitations.
What optical chirality measures
Optical chirality is a local property of an electromagnetic field. “Local” means its value can change from point to point in a beam, near a surface, or inside an interference pattern. “Signed” means the value has opposite signs for mirror-related handednesses. It is a pseudoscalar: reflecting the field reverses its sign, whereas ordinary intensity does not.
A useful distinction is:
- Energy density or intensity: how much electromagnetic field is present.
- Optical chirality: how that field is organized with a particular handedness.
Two fields can have similar energy densities while carrying opposite optical chirality. A single field can also contain regions of positive, negative, and nearly zero chirality. This is why a brightness map cannot substitute for a chirality map.

Tang and Cohen introduced optical chirality as a field quantity that predicts the asymmetry in excitation rates between a small chiral molecule and its mirror image. The molecular response still depends on the molecule’s transition moments, orientation, concentration, and losses; the field is one part of the interaction rather than the entire explanation.

A common instantaneous definition
Let E(r,t) and B(r,t) be real electric and magnetic fields in SI units. One widely used instantaneous optical-chirality density is
C(r,t) = (ε0/2) E · (∇ × E) + (1/2μ0) B · (∇ × B).

when the phasors use an e−iωt time convention and the usual source-free assumptions apply. Other publications use H instead of B, adopt an e+iωt convention, or include a different normalization. Those choices can change a sign or prefactor without changing the underlying physics. State the time dependence, units, field variables, and normalization before comparing numerical values.
Conservation and transport
Optical chirality has a continuity equation analogous to the Poynting energy theorem. In a lossless source-free region, a time change in chirality density is balanced by a chirality flux through the boundary. Material absorption, dispersion, currents, and interfaces add source or sink terms. Thus a simulation that shows a large local value does not automatically imply that the same amount of chirality reaches a detector or a molecule elsewhere.
Normalizing chirality
Researchers often compare a local chirality-to-energy ratio with the ratio for a circularly polarized plane wave at the same frequency. This dimensionless comparison is useful only when the energy definition and averaging volume are specified. A ratio can be large because of field structure, a small local denominator, or a chosen normalization; it is not a universal measure of signal enhancement.
Left- and right-handed light
Opposite helicity states
For a plane wave, the electric-field vector rotates in a plane perpendicular to the propagation direction. Reversing the rotation sense produces the opposite helicity state and reverses the sign of optical chirality. In quantum language, helicity is the projection of photon angular momentum along the direction of momentum. The two circular states therefore carry opposite spin angular momentum, conventionally written as +ℏ and −ℏ per photon along the propagation axis.
Why the labels can be confusing
“Left” and “right” are not meaningful without a viewing convention. Fix the propagation direction, specify whether the observer looks along the beam or toward the source, and state the time-dependence convention used for phasors. Reversing the viewing direction makes a rotation that looked clockwise appear counterclockwise, so an unqualified statement such as “clockwise is right-handed” is incomplete.

Is circularly polarized light chiral?
Yes. An ideal circularly polarized plane wave has a nonzero helicity and optical chirality, so its mirror image is the opposite circular state rather than a superposable copy obtained by a simple rotation. In that sense the field is chiral.
Linear and elliptical polarization
Linearly polarized light has no handed rotation of the electric vector and has zero net helicity for an ideal plane wave. Elliptically polarized light has a handed rotation but unequal field amplitudes along its principal axes; its chirality lies between the linear and circular limits for a given energy normalization. The sign follows the rotation sense, while the magnitude depends on the ellipticity and field amplitude.
Structured and standing fields
In focused beams, near fields, evanescent waves, or standing-wave patterns, the electric vector can trace a complicated three-dimensional trajectory. A casual two-dimensional clockwise/counterclockwise description may fail. The handedness paper associated with Tang and Cohen emphasizes defining chirality from the full time-dependent polarization trajectory. Such fields can have opposite or zero chirality at neighboring points even when the total beam appears to have one polarization.
How optical chirality produces circular dichroism
Field handedness meets molecular handedness
A chiral molecule and its mirror image have transition moments that couple differently to opposite helicities. If a sample absorbs one circular state more strongly than the other, the differential absorption is circular dichroism. CD is widely used to characterize organic and biological compounds.

The measured difference is not determined by the light alone. It depends on:
- the sign and magnitude of the local optical chirality;
- the molecule’s own handedness and transition moments;
- molecular orientation and alignment;
- concentration, path length, and spectral resonance;
- absorption, scattering, substrate effects, and detector geometry; and
- how the field and molecular response are averaged over the illuminated volume.
Changing the enantiomer reverses the molecular contribution, while switching the incident helicity reverses the field contribution. Instrumental imbalance, linear-polarization leakage, and background birefringence can mimic or obscure a small differential signal.
The dissymmetry factor
CD results are often summarized with a dissymmetry factor, commonly written as g, that compares differential absorption with an average absorption. Tang and Cohen reported that g is typically below 10−3 at visible wavelengths for most small molecules. They explain the small value by noting that molecular dimensions are much smaller than the helical pitch of visible circularly polarized light. This is a statement about ordinary small-molecule responses, not a limit applying to every nanostructure, resonance, or nonlinear experiment.
Interpreting a CD spectrum
A positive or negative CD band is meaningful only with the instrument’s polarization convention, wavelength, baseline procedure, and sample orientation recorded. A sign change can reflect a different enantiomer, a resonance with a different transition, or an optical artifact. Comparing spectra requires matching these conditions rather than comparing the plotted sign in isolation.

Tang and Cohen showed that Maxwell-equation solutions can contain regions where the optical-chirality-to-energy ratio exceeds that of a circularly polarized plane wave. Such fields are commonly called superchiral fields. They are created by structured interference, near-field coupling, or other forms of field shaping.

How the enhancement is engineered
Typical strategies combine fields with different propagation directions, phases, polarizations, or spatial confinement. Interference can create a location where the curls and phase relations entering C reinforce one another while the local energy density remains comparatively low. Nanophotonic resonators and interfaces can provide similar spatial and spectral control.
What the claim does and does not promise
“Superchiral” describes a local field ratio under a stated normalization. It does not guarantee a universally larger CD signal. The observed molecular response can be reduced by absorption, field variation across the sample, molecular position and orientation, saturation, disorder, and averaging over positive and negative regions. A fair comparison specifies the reference plane wave, frequency, energy normalization, sample volume, and detector geometry.
A field may be superchiral at one point and ordinary or oppositely chiral a short distance away. Placing a molecule, film, or detector at a different location can therefore change the result without changing the nominal incident beam.
A practical workflow for analyzing an optical field
- Declare conventions. Record the coordinate system, propagation direction, observer direction used for left/right labels, phasor time dependence, SI or other units, and whether fields are written as B or H.
- Obtain both fields. Measure or simulate the complex electric and magnetic fields, not intensity alone. Near interfaces, do not infer the magnetic field from a plane-wave impedance relation unless that approximation is justified.
- Calculate chirality. Use a definition consistent with the declared convention. For harmonic fields, evaluate the complex product involving E* and B, including the correct frequency and prefactor.
- Calculate energy with the same averaging. Use a cycle-averaged electric-plus-magnetic energy density for harmonic fields. Mixing instantaneous chirality with averaged energy produces a misleading ratio.
- Map the result spatially. Plot signed chirality, energy density, and their ratio on the same coordinates. Mark nodes, interfaces, resonators, and the actual sample volume.
- Check the handedness. Reverse the incident circular polarization or mirror the geometry. The expected field contribution should change sign when the setup is otherwise symmetric.
- Average over the interaction region. Integrate the field-weighted molecular response over thickness, lateral area, orientation, and wavelength bandwidth. Do not report the maximum pixel as the sample’s response.
- Validate with a reference. Compare against a circularly polarized plane wave or another explicitly defined reference at equal frequency and equal energy normalization.
- Report losses and boundaries. Include material absorption, dispersion, substrate reflections, finite apertures, and detector response. These can create chirality sources or sinks and alter the measured signal.
Where optical chirality is useful
Circular-dichroism spectroscopy
CD provides a direct application: measuring the difference in absorption of opposite circular polarizations to characterize chiral molecules and biological compounds. Optical-chirality calculations help separate the field delivered to the sample from the molecular spectrum being measured.
Engineered nanophotonic fields
Metasurfaces, resonators, waveguides, and near-field structures can tailor the sign and distribution of chirality. The design goal may be stronger coupling to a chosen enantiomer, spatially selective sensing, or control of emission from a chiral transition. Any claimed improvement must state whether it refers to local field ratio, absorbed power, emitted power, or a measured differential signal.
Nonlinear chiral-light experiments
Nonlinear processes can involve multiple photons and phase-sensitive combinations of fields. Optical chirality remains relevant, but the response is no longer described by a simple linear absorption coefficient. Pulse shape, peak intensity, phase matching, resonance, and material nonlinearities must be included.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing intensity with chirality: a bright field can be achiral, and a lower-intensity field can have a larger normalized chirality.
- Leaving left/right undefined: always give propagation and viewing directions plus the phasor convention.
- Assigning the molecule’s chirality to the light: field handedness and molecular handedness are separate properties that combine in the interaction.
- Calling a local maximum a universal enhancement: state the reference, normalization, sample volume, and averaging procedure.
- Using plane-wave formulas in a near field: evanescent and strongly focused fields require the full vector fields and their spatial derivatives.
- Ignoring sign reversals in a structure: map the complete region rather than inspecting one hotspot.
- Overinterpreting a tiny CD signal: test polarization purity, baseline stability, linear dichroism, birefringence, scattering, and detector imbalance.
How to state a result clearly
A reproducible report should identify the chirality definition, unit system, time convention, frequency or wavelength, coordinate and viewing conventions, energy normalization, spatial averaging region, and material model. For an experiment, add the incident polarization calibration, sample orientation, path length, concentration, substrate, and background correction. For a simulation, give mesh or convergence checks and the boundary conditions that determine the local fields.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The central interpretation is straightforward when these details are present: optical chirality is the signed handed organization of the electromagnetic field; circular polarization supplies opposite helicities; and a chiral material converts that field difference into an observable differential response. The size and even the sign of a measured effect depend on the complete field–molecule–measurement system.
