OPSWAT Deep CDR is an enterprise file-sanitization technology that reconstructs supported files after removing or handling potentially risky content. OPSWAT lists three deployment choices—MetaDefender Cloud, an AWS-account AMI, and on-premises MetaDefender Core—but the right fit depends on your file formats, control requirements, integrations, and how you want unsupported or failed files handled.

What OPSWAT Deep CDR does

Content Disarm and Reconstruction (CDR) aims to make files safer by rebuilding them from approved content rather than relying only on detecting known malicious signatures. OPSWAT describes Deep CDR as a five-stage process:

  1. Evaluate the file and verify its type and consistency.
  2. Create a placeholder to hold approved content.
  3. Disarm and rebuild the file using approved objects.
  4. Test and validate the regenerated file.
  5. Quarantine the original.

The intent is to remove or handle potentially harmful objects while producing a usable reconstructed file. This does not mean every file will be sanitized or that every feature, metadata field, or workflow will remain unchanged. OPSWAT’s description of the process is on its Deep CDR product page.

Which file types does it support?

OPSWAT’s current product page advertises support for 200+ file types. That is a vendor-stated headline, not an independently audited coverage figure. An older OPSWAT selection guide, published approximately 2020, says the system identifies over 4,500 file types and sanitizes over 100 common types. The figures describe different scopes and come from sources of different dates; they should not be treated as directly comparable measures of current sanitization coverage.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Before purchase, confirm the exact file extension and version you need, and what Deep CDR does to that format. OPSWAT says its product page provides supported-version information, sample files, and performance data, but the exact coverage required for your own environment still needs validation. See the current product page and the CDR Selection Guide.

Deployment options and their trade-offs

Option Where it runs What to evaluate
MetaDefender Cloud OPSWAT’s cloud service Data residency, integration requirements, and whether its standard sanitization configuration meets your policy.
MetaDefender AMI In the customer’s AWS account Control and data-handling requirements, AWS integration, and the customer’s operational responsibility.
MetaDefender Core On premises Local control, integration and infrastructure needs, and the team’s responsibility for operation and scaling.

These are evaluation questions rather than guarantees about each product’s controls or performance. Confirm the exact file-handling configuration available for the deployment you plan to use, and how it fits your data-residency and operational requirements. OPSWAT describes the deployment options on its Deep CDR page.

What changes in MetaDefender Cloud?

OPSWAT’s Cloud documentation says Deep CDR uses a standard configuration for all users that cannot be adapted to individual user needs. It describes format-specific actions, including macro or embedded-object handling for Office files and script handling for HTML and SVG.

  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

OPSWAT also says sanitized files retain their original format rather than being converted into another format. Keeping the format does not establish that every application behavior or document feature will survive: sanitization actions can remove or change content. If your policies require configurable actions, confirm whether the product and deployment you are considering offer those controls. Read OPSWAT’s MetaDefender Cloud data-sanitization documentation.

What happens when a file is unsupported or sanitization fails?

Deep CDR does not sanitize every file. OPSWAT’s Storage Security documentation says unsupported files remain in their original state and are handled according to the configured unsupported-file branch. It also identifies empty non-text files as a sanitization failure case.

Failure handling depends on configuration. With a block-on-failure setting, a failed file can be routed to blocked handling. Without that setting, the original verdict may be preserved and the original file left where it is. Test both unsupported-file and failure paths with your own policies before relying on them in a production workflow. Details are in OPSWAT’s Storage Security Deep CDR configuration documentation.

What do the published effectiveness claims establish?

OPSWAT’s product page advertises 100% results in reports associated with AV-Comparatives, SE Labs, and SecureIQ Lab. Specifically, it describes a 100% sanitization rate in the AV-Comparatives review, a 100% total accuracy rating from SE Labs, and a 100% rating in SecureIQ Lab’s CDR test. These are claims presented by OPSWAT about named reports; their headlines alone do not establish the reports’ test scope or predict results in a buyer’s environment.

OPSWAT also publishes sample cases showing before-and-after multi-engine detection counts. The company says the examples were uploaded by its customers and community members, so they are illustrative vendor-published examples, not a representative independent benchmark. The Deep CDR Technology Report page contains those samples. Treat published figures as one input to due diligence, then validate your own formats, policies, integrations, and handling of failure cases.

How to assess Deep CDR for your organization

Use a deployment evaluation that tests the parts most likely to affect security and business workflows:

  • Inventory the files that matter. Include exact extensions and versions, not just broad categories such as “Office documents.”
  • Inspect sanitization actions. Determine which macros, embedded objects, scripts, or other content may be handled for each relevant format.
  • Test usability after reconstruction. Check the features and application workflows your users need; retaining the original file format is not proof that all behavior is preserved.
  • Exercise unsupported and failed-file branches. Verify whether files are blocked, left in place, or handled another way under your actual configuration.
  • Match deployment to control and operations needs. Compare Cloud, an AMI in your AWS account, and on-premises Core against data residency, integrations, scalability, and who operates the system.
  • Confirm commercial and contractual details directly. The reviewed product materials do not establish current prices, licensing measures, service levels, or buyer-specific performance commitments.

Verdict

OPSWAT Deep CDR is a reconstruction-based option for organizations that want to sanitize files while retaining a usable version in the original format. Its fit depends on exact format coverage, the controls available in the chosen deployment, and tested handling of unsupported files and failures. OPSWAT’s published coverage and test headlines are useful starting points, not substitutes for validating the files and policies your organization actually uses.
