NXTPAPER is TCL’s paper-like display platform, not a type of E Ink. It combines display hardware, surface and reflection management, and software reading modes while retaining the color, apps and motion expected from a phone or tablet. E Ink uses electrophoretic particles that move in an electric field; its reflective, bistable image can remain visible without display power. The right choice depends on whether you value a general-purpose color device or a book-focused reflective screen.

What NXTPAPER actually is

NXTPAPER is a family of TCL display implementations and software features introduced in 2021. The name does not identify one fixed panel technology. TCL has described different generations using different hardware: its 2021 material presented a highly reflective IPS screen, while on March 4, 2026, TCL announced a next-generation implementation built on AMOLED. A device’s model and generation therefore matter more than the NXTPAPER label alone.

TCL’s current U.S. technology description combines several elements: a paper-like tactile surface, control of reflections, low-blue-light features, automatic brightness adaptation and circadian colour-temperature support. These are design and software choices intended to make prolonged viewing feel more like looking at printed material, while the device remains a conventional smart device with colour graphics, touch interaction and moving content. Read the specifications for the exact phone or tablet before assuming that every NXTPAPER feature is present.

The platform is best understood as an attempt to reduce the visual compromises of ordinary glossy screens rather than as electronic paper. A NXTPAPER tablet can run the same kinds of apps as another Android tablet, display photographs and video in colour, and refresh rapidly enough for normal interfaces. Its paper-like modes alter the viewing experience; they do not turn the panel into an electrophoretic display.

How E Ink forms an image

E Ink’s electrophoretic technology suspends charged black and white pigment particles in fluid. Applying an electric field moves the particles toward or away from the surface, changing which colour is visible at each pixel. E Ink explains the process in its technical overview: charged particles move under an electric field. Colour E Ink products add colour-filter or coloured-particle approaches, so E Ink is not invariably monochrome.

The surface is reflective. As E Ink puts it, “In an E Ink display, no backlight is used; rather, ambient light from the environment is reflected from the surface of the display back to your eyes.” See E Ink’s explanation of reflective displays. Many readers add a front light for darkness or low indoor light. A front light shines across the surface; it is different from an LCD or OLED backlight that sends light through the panel toward you.

Why bistability affects battery use

E Ink matrix displays are bistable. Power is required while the image is being updated, but not to keep an unchanged page visible, according to E Ink’s benefits overview. That characteristic helps a reader use little display power when it is showing a static page. The complete device still consumes energy for its processor, storage, wireless radios, audio, sensors and any front lighting, so “no power for a static image” does not mean an E Ink reader never needs charging.

  • Dark, gray, or wrongfully believed low resolution screen : All Eink products used Kaleido 3 color e-ink technology, which currently has inherent limitations and share the same darker or grayer screen than LCD/LED ones. This is a characteristic of all e-ink products, not a defect. If it doesn't meet your expectations, you may return the product under our return policy. However, please note this is not considered a product fault.
  • Over 99% of mobile apps are optimized for LCD/OLED screens with: High refresh rate expectations; Color-rich interfaces; Animation-heavy designs; These design choices conflict with E Ink's natural strengths in static content display.Energy Efficiency Trade-off‌: E Ink relies on electrophoretic particles that physically move to form images, resulting in slower refresh rates, makes it inherently unsuitable for conventional app interfaces designed for always-powered displays. If the buyers are not satisfied, they can apply for return or exchange, but it cannot be regarded as a malfunction.

Why motion looks different

Changing a page, scrolling, animating a menu or playing video requires repeated updates. E Ink’s technical explanation says current production matrix modules do not support video-rate updates, although faster modes can handle some animation. Ghosting, flashes between refreshes and slower response are normal trade-offs for the reflective, low-static-power design. A NXTPAPER device uses a conventional fast-refresh display architecture, so scrolling, games and video behave more like they do on other phones and tablets.

NXTPAPER and E Ink compared

Question TCL NXTPAPER E Ink ePaper
What is it? A TCL platform combining display hardware and software features; implementation changes by generation, including an AMOLED announcement in 2026. A reflective electrophoretic display technology in which charged pigment particles move to form the image.
Where does illumination come from? It depends on the panel. NXTPAPER phones and tablets use the lighting arrangement of their specific IPS, AMOLED or other implementation, plus TCL’s reflection and viewing controls. Ambient light reflects from the surface. Some readers use a separate front light in dim conditions.
Colour and motion Designed for colour apps, photographs, interfaces and moving content; exact refresh and colour specifications are model-specific. Colour models exist, but current production matrix modules are not designed for video-rate updates.
Static-page power Do not assume E Ink-like bistability. Consumption depends on the actual panel, operating system and use. The image needs no display power to remain after an update, although the rest of the reader continues using power.
Typical priority Paper-like viewing combined with a full smartphone or tablet experience. Reflective, book-focused reading and efficient display of mostly static pages.

NXTPAPER generations and the figures TCL publishes

2021 reflective IPS description

TCL’s 2021-era technology page described NXTPAPER as a highly reflective IPS screen. It claimed 25% higher contrast than “most e-ink tablets” and more than 65% greater power efficiency than standard LCD screens. Those are historical manufacturer comparisons; the page does not detail the test method, and the claims should not be applied to current NXTPAPER models.

NXTPAPER 3.0 in January 2024

In its January 2024 announcement, TCL introduced three named viewing modes: Normal View, a low-contrast Color Paper Mode, and a black-and-white Ink Paper mode. The announcement is available at TCL’s NXTPAPER 3.0 release. Mode names and availability are generation-specific, so check the device’s settings and software version rather than assuming that every model includes all three.

Next-generation AMOLED announcement in March 2026

On March 4, 2026, TCL announced a next-generation NXTPAPER implementation on AMOLED. TCL reports circular polarization reaching 90% of natural light and blue light as low as 2.9% in that announcement at TCL’s 2026 release. These are company-reported figures, not independent measurements, and they describe the announced generation rather than every NXTPAPER product.

TCL’s current U.S. page reports blue light as low as 3.41% for its latest technology, based on internal laboratory tests, with actual performance varying by product and use: TCL’s U.S. NXTPAPER overview. The 2.9% and 3.41% figures come from different TCL materials and should not be treated as a universal specification or a clinical result.

What “paper-like” changes in everyday use

Reflection and surface feel

A conventional glossy display can mirror windows and overhead lamps. NXTPAPER’s surface and optical controls are intended to reduce that distracting reflection and provide a more paper-like texture. The amount of glare you see still depends on room lighting, viewing angle, screen brightness and the exact model. A matte or textured surface can also slightly change how sharp text, icons or stylus strokes appear compared with a glossy panel.

Colour modes

Normal viewing preserves the colour and contrast needed for ordinary apps. Color Paper Mode lowers contrast and colour intensity for a softer reading presentation, while Ink Paper mode presents a black-and-white appearance on models that include those NXTPAPER 3.0 options. These are display presets, not separate display technologies. A mode can be useful for an article or book yet unsuitable for colour-critical photo editing or video.

Brightness and colour temperature

TCL describes automatic brightness adaptation and circadian colour-temperature support on its current technology page. Such controls can change the screen’s brightness or warmth as lighting and time change. They may make a particular environment more comfortable, but comfort is personal and the published descriptions do not establish that NXTPAPER prevents eye disease or universally eliminates eyestrain.

Which one fits your reading habits?

Choose a dedicated E Ink reader when

  • Most of your time is spent reading novels, long articles or documents that do not need rapid animation.
  • You prefer reflected room light to a luminous phone or tablet display.
  • You value a static page that does not require display power between updates.
  • You can accept slower refreshes, occasional ghosting and limited suitability for video.

Choose a NXTPAPER phone or tablet when

  • You need Android or another full mobile operating system, multitasking, cameras, messaging and ordinary apps.
  • You read in colour, annotate with a stylus, browse interactive pages or watch video on the same device.
  • You want a choice of normal, paper-like or monochrome viewing modes rather than a permanently reflective e-paper panel.
  • You would rather carry one general-purpose device than a phone plus a dedicated reader.

A public discussion asking whether NXTPAPER is a compromise for people who dislike the experience of E Ink illustrates the trade-off, but it is not a technical test or proof of broad user preference: the discussion. Some readers dislike E Ink’s refresh behaviour and limited colour; others find a self-emissive phone tiring. Your own priorities decide which compromise is acceptable.

How to evaluate a specific NXTPAPER device

Because the family spans generations and panel types, use this checklist before buying or comparing models:

  1. Identify the generation and panel. Record the exact model number and whether its specifications say IPS, AMOLED or another panel type. Do not transfer a 2021 claim to a 2026 device, or vice versa.
  2. List the available modes. Look in Display settings or the manual for Normal View, Color Paper Mode, Ink Paper mode and any reading shortcut. Confirm whether a mode changes colour, contrast, refresh behaviour or only the colour temperature.
  3. Check lighting behaviour. Compare the stated brightness, anti-reflection treatment and automatic-brightness controls with the places you actually read. A paper-like surface cannot remove every reflection in direct sunlight.
  4. Check motion requirements. If you watch video, play games or scroll technical documents, verify the panel’s refresh-rate and response specifications. NXTPAPER is not automatically equivalent to E Ink or to another AMOLED panel.
  5. Check battery claims in context. Ask whether a quoted figure is a laboratory result, a panel-only comparison or a complete-device estimate. TCL’s historical “more than 65%” efficiency claim was a vendor comparison with unspecified methodology, not a current battery-life guarantee.
  6. Try your own content. Read small text, view a colour image, scroll a webpage and switch modes in the lighting where you will use the device. Personal comfort cannot be inferred from a blue-light percentage alone.

Common misconceptions

“NXTPAPER is TCL’s version of E Ink.”

No. NXTPAPER is TCL’s display platform; E Ink is electrophoretic electronic-paper technology. They can both be marketed as easier-reading alternatives to glossy screens, but they create and illuminate images differently.

“Every NXTPAPER screen is an LCD.”

That was not true across the family. TCL’s 2021 description used a reflective IPS screen, while TCL announced an AMOLED implementation in 2026. Always name the model and generation when panel type matters.

“A low-blue-light number proves a health benefit.”

It does not. The 2.9% and 3.41% figures are TCL-reported measurements with generation and test qualifications. No clinical conclusion about eyesight, eye disease or universal eyestrain reduction follows from them.

“E Ink uses no power.”

Its bistable display can hold an unchanged page without display power, but updating pages, running the processor, communicating over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, playing audio and operating a front light all consume energy.

Bottom line for readers

Think of NXTPAPER as a color, app-capable phone or tablet redesigned to manage reflections and offer paper-like viewing modes. Think of E Ink as a reflective electrophoretic display whose greatest strengths are static-page efficiency and a book-oriented reading experience. Neither category wins every comparison: select a named model after checking its panel, modes, lighting, motion behaviour and documented test conditions.
