Notepad++ is a free, open-source text and source-code editor for Windows. It can replace Windows Notepad for editing plain text and code, and it supports programming and natural languages. It is not a word processor designed for rich document formatting or page layout.
What is Notepad++?
Notepad++ is a Windows application for writing and editing text. The project describes it as both a source-code editor and a Notepad replacement. It is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL), an open-source license. The project characterizes the software as free in both the cost and freedom-to-use senses. Is Notepad++ a word processor?
No. The Notepad++ community FAQ identifies it as a text editor, not a word processor. It is built around editing text and code, rather than laying out pages or creating richly formatted documents. The community FAQ explains this distinction.
Can Notepad++ use plugins or macros?
Yes. Notepad++ includes macro recording and playback, and plugins can add capabilities. The community automation guide also describes external remote control as an option for automation. These features have limits: some commands need user input or cannot be recorded, and plugin command IDs may be dynamic. More complex automation may therefore require a plugin or an external controller rather than a recorded macro. What Windows versions does it support?
The official project repository says Notepad++ runs in the Microsoft Windows environment and supports Windows systems that are still supported by Microsoft. For the project’s current platform and release information, consult the official repository. Its release history notes that releases have been GPG-signed since version 7.6.5; that historical signing detail is not a substitute for checking current installation guidance.
