NGINX is an HTTP web server and a traffic intermediary: it can serve files, terminate TLS, cache responses, reverse-proxy requests, balance load across application servers, proxy TCP/UDP traffic, and handle mail protocols. Its event-driven, non-blocking workers are designed to keep many connections in flight with low per-connection overhead. That makes it especially useful at the edge of a busy site, but it is not automatically faster or better than Apache for every workload.
What NGINX is
NGINX (pronounced “engine x”) began as a web server and is now commonly deployed as the front door for an entire application stack. The official NGINX project description lists six roles: HTTP web server, reverse proxy, content cache, load balancer, TCP/UDP proxy server, and mail proxy server. One installation can perform several of these jobs at once.
Recommended Free Tools
As a web server, NGINX returns static files such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images and downloads. As a reverse proxy, it accepts a browser’s connection and forwards the request to an application server, then sends the application’s response back to the browser. As a load balancer, it chooses among multiple backends. As a cache, it can reuse an already generated response instead of asking the backend to calculate it again.
NGINX also advertises TLS Server Name Indication (SNI), HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 support. Treat those as capabilities of the project, not a guarantee that every packaged build has them enabled: the exact version, modules, operating system and configuration determine what your deployment can use.

How NGINX handles many connections
The key design difference is its event-driven, non-blocking architecture. The NGINX architecture article describes one worker process per CPU core as a typical arrangement. Each worker interleaves work on many connections instead of assigning a dedicated process or thread to every connection.
Workers, events and state machines
A worker waits for network events—such as bytes arriving, a socket becoming writable or a timer expiring—and then advances the affected connection. State machines keep track of where each request is in its protocol exchange. When one client is waiting on network I/O, the worker can process another client rather than sitting idle.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This approach reduces the process or thread overhead associated with older server models and can keep memory use more predictable when a site has many slow or long-lived clients. The official article says the architecture can scale to “hundreds of thousands of concurrent connections on modern hardware.” That is a description of the design’s potential, not a capacity promise for your server.
What the architecture does not prove
Connection handling is only one part of performance. CPU speed, memory, storage, kernel networking, TLS settings, enabled modules, application response time, database behavior, cache hit rate and traffic shape all affect results. A small site serving a few dynamic pages may see no meaningful benefit from changing servers, while a site with many idle keep-alive connections or large static downloads may benefit substantially.
What NGINX is used for
Static-file delivery
NGINX can serve static assets directly, keeping requests for images, stylesheets, scripts and downloads away from an application runtime. This is useful when the application server is optimized for generating responses and should not spend workers handling files that never change during a request.

Reverse proxying
A reverse proxy presents one public endpoint while hiding the internal application servers. NGINX’s reverse-proxy documentation identifies three common reasons to proxy: distribute load, present content from different websites, and pass requests to application servers over protocols other than HTTP.
The documented proxy modules support HTTP, FastCGI, uwsgi, SCGI and memcached backends. That lets one edge server route ordinary web requests, a PHP-style FastCGI application, a Python or similar uwsgi application, or a cached object to the appropriate upstream.
TLS termination
NGINX can be the place where public HTTPS connections are accepted and decrypted before traffic is sent to private application servers. Centralizing certificates and protocol policy simplifies a multi-server deployment, provided the internal network and forwarded-request settings are secured correctly.
Content caching
When a response is safe to reuse, NGINX can store it and answer later requests from the cache. Caching is most valuable for expensive, repeatable work such as public pages, API responses with an agreed freshness period, or large files. Personalized or rapidly changing responses require careful cache rules; putting them in a shared cache can expose one user’s content to another.
Load balancing
NGINX can distribute requests across several application servers to improve performance, scalability and reliability. Its reverse-proxy load-balancing implementation includes passive health checks: NGINX observes failures while proxying and can stop sending traffic to a backend that is not responding successfully. Passive checks are not the same as a separate, proactive health-monitoring system, so critical services may still need application-level monitoring.

TCP, UDP and mail proxying
The project also supports TCP/UDP proxying and mail proxying. These capabilities matter when NGINX must front more than browser traffic, but protocol-specific configuration and testing are required; an HTTP reverse-proxy configuration is not automatically suitable for a raw TCP or UDP service.
How an NGINX reverse proxy request flows
- The client connects to NGINX. DNS points the public hostname at the NGINX address, and NGINX accepts the TCP connection and, for HTTPS, negotiates TLS.
- NGINX selects a route. The hostname, URI and other request properties determine which server block and upstream should handle the request.
- NGINX forwards the request. It sends the request to the configured upstream using HTTP, FastCGI, uwsgi, SCGI or memcached proxying as appropriate.
- The upstream generates a response. The application server can finish its work without having to maintain the client’s slow network connection directly.
- NGINX buffers and returns data. Response buffering is enabled by default in the documented configuration. NGINX can receive data from the upstream and hold it while sending at a slower rate to the client.
- NGINX records failures. When a proxied backend fails, passive health-check behavior can influence subsequent load-balancing decisions.
Buffering is useful when clients have uneven connection speeds, but it consumes memory and temporary storage. Streaming applications, server-sent events and long-lived responses may need buffering settings chosen specifically for their behavior rather than accepting defaults.
Why choose NGINX over Apache in some deployments
- Many simultaneous connections: event-driven workers can interleave large numbers of mostly idle or I/O-bound connections without a one-process-or-thread-per-client design.
- A dedicated edge layer: NGINX can terminate TLS, serve static assets and apply routing policy before traffic reaches application servers.
- Several backends behind one address: one proxy can route different paths or hostnames to different services and balance a pool of identical application servers.
- Predictable proxy buffering: the default buffering behavior lets an upstream finish while NGINX deals with slower clients, which can protect application workers from connection-speed differences.
- Protocol breadth at the perimeter: HTTP, FastCGI, uwsgi, SCGI and memcached proxying are available in the documented proxy modules, with separate TCP/UDP and mail-proxy roles when needed.
These are workload-based reasons, not a universal speed ranking. If your primary requirement is a high number of concurrent connections, static delivery or a consistent reverse-proxy tier, NGINX is a strong candidate to evaluate.
Where Apache HTTP Server remains a strong choice
Apache httpd can also serve static and dynamic content and act as a reverse proxy or gateway. Apache’s official reverse-proxy guide lists security, high availability, load balancing and centralized authentication as common reasons to deploy it. That overlap is important: choosing NGINX does not automatically add capabilities that Apache lacks.

NGINX versus Apache: the decision axes
| Question | What favors NGINX | What can favor Apache |
|---|---|---|
| Connection model | Event-driven, non-blocking workers that interleave many connections. | An established Apache deployment whose current model already meets demand. |
| Static files and edge caching | A dedicated, lightweight layer for assets, downloads and reusable responses. | Static delivery integrated with existing httpd configuration and modules. |
| Reverse proxy | HTTP, FastCGI, uwsgi, SCGI and memcached proxying with default response buffering. | Existing gateway rules, authentication or rewrite modules that are already tested. |
| Load balancing | Traffic distribution across application servers with passive health checks. | Apache’s existing high-availability and load-balancing setup. |
| Authentication and modules | Centralized edge policy when the required features are available in your build. | A mature module ecosystem and organization-specific authentication integration. |
| Operations | A clear separation between public edge and private application tiers. | Team familiarity, deployment tooling and support built around httpd. |
| Performance evidence | Potential advantages for connection-heavy or proxy-heavy workloads. | Potentially equal or better results for a particular application and configuration. |
No authoritative, controlled percentage in the cited official material proves that NGINX is always faster than Apache. “Faster” must be defined as a workload: requests per second, latency at a stated percentile, concurrent connections, bandwidth, CPU cost or memory use. Measure both servers with the same hardware, operating-system tuning, TLS settings, modules, cache state and application backends.
Should you put NGINX in front of your application?
Use the following decision test before introducing another layer:
- Do you need one public endpoint to route traffic to multiple application servers or services?
- Are static files, TLS handshakes or slow clients consuming resources that should belong to the application?
- Will caching safely reduce repeated backend work?
- Do you need HTTP plus FastCGI, uwsgi, SCGI or memcached routing, or TCP/UDP proxying?
- Can your team monitor another process, maintain its configuration and respond to proxy-specific failures?
- Can you test connection limits, timeouts, buffering, headers, authentication and graceful reloads before production?
If the answers are mostly yes, NGINX is worth a proof-of-concept. If you only need to serve a small site and already operate Apache successfully, adding NGINX may increase complexity without solving a real problem.

- Document the current behavior. Inventory hostnames, URL rewrites, redirects, authentication, certificates, upload sizes, streaming endpoints, WebSocket or long-lived connections, backend protocols and required headers.
- Separate edge and application responsibilities. Decide which assets NGINX serves directly, which paths it proxies, where TLS ends and which responses may be cached.
- Map every upstream. Create a route for each application server or protocol. Confirm that the backend receives the original host, client-address information and scheme in the form it expects.
- Choose buffering and timeout behavior. Keep default response buffering for ordinary pages when it helps protect application workers; test streaming and long responses separately.
- Define failure handling. Set an explicit policy for backend errors, retries and passive health-check reactions. Pair it with external monitoring so an application that returns incorrect content is not mistaken for a healthy one.
- Test representative traffic. Include static assets, cache hits and misses, authenticated pages, uploads, slow clients, backend failures and peak concurrent connections. Compare latency, error rate, CPU, memory and bandwidth with Apache under the same conditions.
- Roll out gradually. Run a canary or a small traffic percentage first, retain a tested rollback path, and watch both NGINX and application metrics during the change.
Common pitfalls and fixes
Assuming the architecture guarantees capacity
The “hundreds of thousands” phrase describes what the architecture can scale to on modern hardware, not what every virtual machine can sustain. Establish limits through a workload-specific test.
Ignoring buffering for streaming
Default buffering is helpful for ordinary proxy responses but can conflict with streaming or event-driven endpoints. Identify those routes and validate delivery timing with a real client before changing settings globally.

Moving TLS without checking application assumptions
When TLS terminates at NGINX, the backend connection may be plain HTTP. Applications that build redirects, secure-cookie decisions or absolute URLs from the connection scheme must receive correctly configured forwarded information and must trust it only from the proxy.
Replacing a working Apache stack for an unmeasured speed claim
Do not migrate solely because someone says NGINX is faster. Compare the complete system, including modules, authentication, rewrites, backend time and operational effort. A technically faster proxy can still be the wrong choice if it breaks a required integration.
Creating a single unmonitored failure point
A proxy concentrates traffic. Use redundant NGINX instances or an appropriate failover design when availability requirements justify it, and monitor both proxy health and the application responses passing through it.
The bottom line
NGINX is best understood as a high-concurrency web and traffic platform, not merely an alternative file server. Its event-driven workers, reverse-proxy buffering, load balancing and protocol support make it a compelling front end for static-heavy, connection-heavy and multi-server applications. Apache remains fully capable of reverse proxying, load balancing, security and centralized authentication, and may be the better operational choice for an established Apache environment. Choose between them with a representative benchmark and a requirements review—not with a blanket claim that one is always faster.
