NASA’s Sun Radio Interferometer Space Experiment (SunRISE) is a planned mission in which six small satellites will work together as one low-frequency radio telescope. By mapping radio bursts associated with energetic particles from the Sun, the constellation aims to help scientists understand where those particles are accelerated and how they move through the Sun’s magnetic environment. NASA’s latest launch plan, updated October 6, 2026, is no earlier than mid-2027 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rideshare.

What SunRISE is designed to do

SunRISE is not a single large observatory. It is a formation of six CubeSats, small satellites designed to operate together as a distributed scientific instrument. Each spacecraft will observe low-frequency radio emissions from the Sun. Scientists will combine those observations to create images and maps of radio bursts associated with energetic solar particles.

Those bursts are signals, not the particles themselves. SunRISE is described as observing radio emissions remotely; it is not a mission that directly samples energetic particles in space. Locating and following the emissions can help researchers investigate where particles are accelerated and how they travel through the magnetic environment extending from the Sun’s outer atmosphere into interplanetary space. NASA’s SunRISE mission overview describes the mission’s objective and planned prime duration.

The central question is not simply how bright a solar radio burst becomes. Scientists want to understand where emissions arise and how their locations and patterns change as energetic particles move outward. SunRISE is designed to provide spatially organized observations of those radio signals, rather than just a single spacecraft’s measurement at one location. The resulting maps can give researchers evidence to compare with their understanding of particle acceleration and the magnetic fields that guide particle motion.

How six satellites become one radio telescope

Formation flying creates a larger effective instrument

The six satellites will fly in formation above Earth’s atmosphere, within roughly 10 kilometers (6 miles) of one another. Instead of relying on one spacecraft’s antenna alone, the mission combines radio measurements from the separate satellites through interferometry. Their relative positions and observation timing are important inputs: together with the measured signals, they allow scientists to form images and maps of low-frequency solar radio emissions.

In effect, the constellation acts like a radio telescope with a much larger effective aperture than any one of its small spacecraft could provide on its own. As JPL Deputy Project Scientist Andrew Romero-Wolf put it, “Some missions put multiple scientific instruments on a single spacecraft, whereas we use multiple small satellites to act as a single instrument.” NASA’s JPL feature attributes the statement to Romero-Wolf.

The process has several linked parts. First, each satellite measures the low-frequency radio emissions that reach it. The constellation’s relative positions and the timing of the observations are also recorded. Scientists then combine those measurements with the spacecraft position and timing information using interferometry. The combined data can be used to produce images and maps, allowing researchers to study the approximate locations and evolution of the radio emissions rather than treating them only as an undifferentiated signal.

That is why the formation is part of the instrument, not just a way to keep six spacecraft near one another. The satellites need to observe as a coordinated group for their separate measurements to contribute to a shared result. Their arrangement supplies the larger effective observing scale, while the combined data make it possible to image low-frequency sources. This approach lets a set of small spacecraft function as one radio observatory without being a single, physically large satellite.

The antenna design

Each spacecraft is designed with four deployable antenna booms arranged in an X shape. A January 2026 JPL engineering update describes the telescoping booms as about 2.5 meters (10 feet) long apiece. These are planned spacecraft features, not evidence that the satellites are already deployed or collecting science data. JPL’s spacecraft-test update describes the antenna design and mission preparation.

The booms are antennas for the radio observations; they are not optical cameras or conventional mirrors. In practical terms, the spacecraft’s deployable antenna arrangement is one of the physical elements that enables each CubeSat to participate in the combined measurement. The mission’s scientific image comes from combining the data across the formation, not from a camera taking an ordinary visible-light picture of the Sun.

Why the spacecraft will orbit above Earth

SunRISE is intended to observe low-frequency radio signals that Earth’s atmosphere blocks. Operating above the atmosphere gives the constellation access to the emissions the mission is designed to study. NASA gives an approximate operating altitude of 35,000 kilometers (22,000 miles) above Earth. The high orbit is therefore part of the observing strategy, not just a way to position the spacecraft near the Sun.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NASA’s mission description places the satellites in a formation at this altitude, where they can maintain the coordinated observations needed for interferometry. The combination of an unobstructed radio view and multiple separated spacecraft is what makes the mission’s remote mapping approach possible. NASA Science’s October 2026 mission update provides the current altitude and launch information.

This also explains why a ground-based instrument would not simply be an equivalent substitute for SunRISE’s observations. The relevant low-frequency signals are blocked by the atmosphere, so SunRISE is planned to observe from above it. The orbit is selected to make those measurements possible while the spacecraft fly in formation. It is not a near-Sun orbit: the cited altitude is above Earth, and the mission studies solar emissions remotely from that vantage point.

What scientists hope to learn—and what that could mean

Solar eruptions can release energetic particles that travel through space. Radio bursts associated with particle events offer clues about where acceleration happens and how particles move through the Sun’s magnetic surroundings. By mapping how those emissions appear and evolve, SunRISE is intended to add evidence about particle acceleration and magnetic-field structure, from the outer corona outward into interplanetary space.

This matters for space-weather science because energetic solar particles can pose radiation hazards to spacecraft and astronauts. Better knowledge of how these events develop may contribute to improved forecasting and help inform efforts to mitigate risk. That is a scientific aim, not a promise of a guaranteed warning service: NASA does not claim that SunRISE will predict every solar storm, provide a specific amount of advance notice, or directly protect a spacecraft or crew. NASA’s July 2026 explanation of the mission’s science rationale connects the observations to space-weather understanding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The value is therefore in improving the scientific picture behind space weather. Radio emissions are associated with particle events, and mapping them can help researchers investigate both the acceleration process and the magnetic environment through which particles travel. That knowledge may support better forecasts over time, but it is one contribution to broader space-weather science—not a standalone forecast product with a promised accuracy or lead time.

How SunRISE differs from a direct particle measurement

SunRISE’s focus is remote sensing of low-frequency radio emissions. The mission does not directly sample the energetic particles that are associated with those emissions. This distinction matters because the radio bursts are evidence scientists can use to investigate particle events, but they are not themselves a count or in-place measurement of the particles.

Solar missions can study the Sun in different ways: some observe imagery or other emissions remotely, while others may make in-situ measurements of particles where a spacecraft is located. SunRISE’s mission description supports describing its own method—radio emissions observed from above Earth’s atmosphere—but does not provide enough information to rank it against other missions or make broad claims that it is better than them. Its distinctive role in this explainer is the coordinated mapping of low-frequency solar radio signals.

Mission duration, teams, and current status

NASA describes a planned 12-month prime mission. Because SunRISE has not yet launched, that is an expected mission duration, not a record of completed operations. A prime mission duration describes the expected main science phase; it should not be mistaken for a guarantee about any possible later extension or for evidence that science observations are already underway.

The science investigation is led by the University of Michigan, which also supplies the science operations center. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory manages the project and provides the mission operations center. Utah State University’s Space Dynamics Laboratory built the spacecraft. The division of roles distinguishes the science leadership and science operations from project management, mission operations, and spacecraft construction. JPL’s January 2026 update describes the spacecraft and project roles.

Launch plan as of October 6, 2026

NASA’s current target is launch no earlier than mid-2027 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rideshare. The flight will share its launch with a payload sponsored by the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command. NASA’s July 2026 update announced the change from the previously planned ULA Vulcan Centaur; older references to a Vulcan launch or a 2026 launch date do not reflect the latest plan. The date is a target, not a guarantee of launch on schedule. NASA’s October 6, 2026 launch update gives the current vehicle and timing.

For readers checking older stories, the launch vehicle is an important detail to date carefully. Vulcan Centaur was part of an earlier plan, but NASA’s July 2026 update superseded it with Falcon Heavy. The October 6 update gives the latest target: no earlier than mid-2027. SunRISE remains a future mission, so neither the launch date nor the planned observations should be described as completed events.

What SunRISE will—and will not—tell us

SunRISE’s distinctive contribution is coordinated imaging of low-frequency solar radio emissions from above the atmosphere. The mission is designed to help locate and track signals associated with energetic particles, providing another way to study how the Sun energizes material and how magnetic structure shapes its movement. It is not a general-purpose optical solar telescope, nor is it described as directly measuring the particles that produce the associated space-weather concern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its observations can contribute to scientific understanding that supports space-weather forecasting, but they should not be mistaken for a standalone operational warning system. The mission’s value lies in improving the evidence scientists have about solar particle events, rather than guaranteeing a particular prediction or protective outcome.

Nor does the available mission information support attaching a consumer product recommendation to the project. SunRISE is specialized mission hardware, and a standard optical solar telescope would not reproduce its low-frequency radio observations from above Earth’s atmosphere. The most useful takeaway for readers is what the mission is built to measure and why six small spacecraft are being used together—not a claim that ordinary equipment can duplicate its work.
