NABVENTURES Limited is NABARD’s wholly owned investment-management subsidiary, incorporated in April 2018 to manage alternative investment funds. It is not one grant or a single startup scheme. Its best-known vehicle, Fund I, is a venture-growth-equity fund for early- to mid-stage businesses in agriculture, food, rural services and agri/rural finance.
NABVENTURES also manages AgriSURE, a separate ₹750 crore Category-II alternative investment fund sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and NABARD. Understanding the manager, the individual funds and their different mandates is essential: a startup that fits Fund I’s agritech thesis is not automatically eligible for AgriSURE, and neither fund publishes a universal acceptance rule or guaranteed ticket size.
What NABVENTURES is
NABVENTURES Limited is a public company wholly owned by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). It was incorporated in April 2018 specifically to manage Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs). The subsidiary’s role is therefore institutional: it raises or administers investment vehicles and deploys their capital according to each fund’s mandate, rather than operating as a standalone agritech accelerator.
On its official company page, NABVENTURES describes its vision as “To be the most trusted Investment Manager for driving rural prosperity”. Its stated mission is “Catalysing capital in innovative and sustainable ventures for transforming the Indian agriculture and rural landscape, in a fair and transparent manner”. These are the company’s own positioning statements, not independent measurements of investment performance.
The distinction between NABVENTURES and a NABVENTURES fund matters. The subsidiary can manage more than one vehicle, each with its own sponsors, corpus, investment stage and risk-return objectives. Fund I and AgriSURE are the two vehicles most relevant to questions about Indian agritech investment.

What Fund I invests in
NABVENTURES describes Fund I as a venture-growth-equity fund investing at the early to mid stage. Its scope is broader than “software for farmers”: the published mandate covers agriculture, food, rural businesses and agri/rural financial services across the value chain.

This breadth explains why an investment can be connected to agritech without being a farm-management app. A lender financing the food-and-agri value chain, a soil-testing company or a rural distribution network can fit the stated rural-development thesis even when its customers are businesses rather than farmers.
How Fund I says it selects companies
The official strategy describes a set of filters rather than a publicly guaranteed application process. A company is more closely aligned when it can demonstrate the following:
- A large, meaningful problem: the business addresses a material challenge in agriculture, food or rural development, rather than applying technology to a marginal use case.
- Technological edge: the strategy gives particular attention to technology that creates a defensible advantage. The strategy page specifically mentions companies raising pre-Series A rounds.
- Domain-aware founders: NABVENTURES says it values experienced teams with relevant domain knowledge and business experience.
- Scalable economics: the preference is for asset-light models that can grow without a proportionate increase in physical infrastructure or working capital.
- Differentiation: the business model or product should stand apart from easily copied competitors.
- Relevant round stage: pre-Series A and Series A rounds are explicitly mentioned in the strategy description.
These points are a published investment lens, not a complete eligibility checklist. Public material reviewed for this article does not establish a standard ticket size, a minimum revenue threshold, a universal ownership target, a fixed geography rule or a deadline-driven application window. A stated sector or stage fit does not guarantee that NABVENTURES will invest.

What an agritech founder should take from that strategy
Founders can use the stated criteria to prepare a more relevant investment case, while avoiding assumptions about terms that have not been published. The strongest explanation usually connects a rural or agricultural pain point to measurable customer value, then shows why the proposed technology and operating model can scale.
Show the problem in its operating context
“Improving farming” is too broad to test. Explain who pays, where the cost or loss occurs, how the current process works and what changes when the product is adopted. For a crop-advisory company, that might mean linking recommendations to reduced input waste or better timing; for a rural-finance platform, it could mean explaining underwriting, collection and fraud controls.

The strategy’s reference to technological edge does not mean that every investment must be an artificial-intelligence company. It does mean a founder should identify the hard-to-replicate asset: proprietary data, validated agronomic models, distribution integration, workflow software, a regulated capability or another durable advantage.
Prove that growth is not purely asset-led
An asset-light preference makes unit economics and deployment requirements important. A business that needs warehouses, fleets, laboratories or field staff may still fit, but it should explain how those assets are financed and how gross margin, utilisation and geographic expansion improve with scale.

Match the round to the business stage
Because the published strategy mentions pre-Series A and Series A, a founder should state the current stage plainly: product status, paying customers, revenue or transaction volume, retention, capital raised and the specific milestones the round will fund. None of these figures is a published NABVENTURES threshold; they are the information needed to test whether a proposed round is coherent.
Fund I’s capital and activity: dated figures
NABARD’s 2024 publication gives the following Fund I figures. They describe the position reported in that publication, not a live balance or current deployment total.

NABARD’s FY2024–25 annual-report filing subsequently states that Fund I achieved full capital commitment. That later statement should not be confused with the ₹320 crore sanctioned figure in the earlier, 31 March 2024 snapshot: one describes the fund’s commitment status, while the other reports cumulative sanctions at a specific cutoff.
Where Fund I operates in the value chain
NABVENTURES’ FY2024–25 annual report says Fund I’s portfolio spans the agri value chain, including precision agriculture and traceability, farm-sourced food processing, biotechnology innovations and digital financial solutions. The following examples and outcomes were reported by NABARD in its 2024 publication.

These are figures reported by NABARD in that 2024 publication. They are not independent impact evaluations presented in the available material, and their dates and definitions should be retained when they are quoted.
Fund I and AgriSURE are different funds
AgriSURE is not a renamed Fund I. It is a separate Category-II AIF with a different public description and sponsor arrangement. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and NABARD sponsor AgriSURE, while NABVENTURES acts as investment manager.

The different mandates mean that “NABVENTURES-backed” does not identify one uniform type of deal. The relevant question is which fund is making the investment and what that fund’s documents allow.

A YourStory report in October 2026 described a ₹450 crore first close for NABVENTURES Fund II. This is secondary reporting. Detailed current terms, final corpus, investment period and an official confirmation were not established in the available sources, so the ₹450 crore figure should be treated as the latest reported development rather than a definitive statement of Fund II’s terms.

For a founder or limited partner evaluating Fund II, the practical implication is to request the fund’s official private-placement or scheme documents and confirm the manager’s current disclosures. Fund I’s historical figures cannot be used as a proxy for Fund II’s strategy, fees, ticket sizes or portfolio construction.
What is not publicly specified
The published strategy is useful for understanding fit, but it does not answer every transaction question. The available material does not establish:
- a standard minimum or maximum cheque size;
- the exact equity, convertible or other instrument used in every deal;
- a guaranteed ownership percentage or board-rights policy;
- an always-open application form, deadline or response time;
- a complete legal eligibility checklist for every fund; or
- the investment committee’s internal scoring or rejection criteria.
