My Hero Academia is both a Japanese superhero manga by Kohei Horikoshi and its animated television adaptation. It follows Izuku Midoriya—known as Deku—a boy born without a superpower in a society where powers called Quirks are normal. After meeting the legendary hero All Might, Midoriya inherits a Quirk called One For All and enters U.A. High School, an elite academy for aspiring heroes.
If you are deciding where to begin, start with Volume 1 of the manga if you prefer reading and controlling the pace. Choose the anime if you want voice acting, music, movement and a more immediately cinematic presentation. Neither format is a prerequisite for understanding the other.
What is My Hero Academia?
My Hero Academia (often shortened to MHA) is a Japanese superhero story created by Kohei Horikoshi. The original work is a manga, meaning a Japanese comic published in sequential chapters and collected into books called volumes. It also has an anime adaptation: an animated version of the story made for television and streaming.

The manga and anime share the same central premise, but they are different ways to experience it. The manga lets you read at your own speed and move directly from one chapter to the next. The anime adds performances, music, color, sound effects and animated action.
The premise in plain English
The story takes place in a fictional society in which 80 percent of the population has a Quirk. That figure comes from VIZ’s publisher synopsis and describes the story’s imaginary world; it is not a statistic about the real world.
A Quirk is the series’ word for an individual superpower. Powers can be spectacular, subtle, useful, inconvenient or dangerous. Because powers are widespread, society has developed schools, laws, careers and public institutions around them. Professional heroes are licensed people who use their abilities to protect civilians and stop criminals.
Izuku Midoriya is unusual because he is born Quirkless, the series’ term for someone without a superpower. He still wants to become a professional hero, even though the world around him treats that dream as unrealistic. His life changes when he encounters All Might, the most famous hero of his era.
All Might recognizes Midoriya’s courage and chooses him to inherit One For All. Midoriya then applies to U.A. High School, a prestigious institution that trains the next generation of heroes. Much of the early story follows his classmates, lessons, rivalries, friendships and first encounters with real danger.
Key terms and names beginners will see
Quirk
A Quirk is a person’s superpower. The word covers both the ability itself and, in ordinary conversation, the trait that makes one person different from another. Characters usually learn to use their Quirks through practice, strategy and formal training.

Quirkless
Being Quirkless means being born without a Quirk. Midoriya begins the story in this position, which creates the central tension between his ambition and the assumptions of his society.
Izuku Midoriya
Midoriya is the protagonist. “Deku” is the name he is commonly called after entering the hero course. He begins as an enthusiastic observer of heroes and gradually has to learn how to act, think and fight as one himself.
All Might
All Might is the heroic figure who meets Midoriya and passes One For All to him. He serves as both a symbol of public heroism and a mentor whose decisions shape Midoriya’s education.
One For All
One For All is the inherited Quirk that Midoriya receives from All Might. It is central to the story’s ideas about legacy, responsibility and the relationship between teachers and students. You do not need to know its later details before starting.
U.A. High School
U.A. (usually written as U.A. High School) is the elite hero-training school Midoriya attends. Students study ordinary academic subjects alongside hero-related training, practical exercises and safety procedures.

In this setting, a hero is not merely someone with good intentions. Professional hero work is a regulated occupation involving public safety, rescue and confrontation with criminals. “Villain” is the series’ broad term for people who use their abilities to commit crimes or threaten others.

What makes the setting different from a typical superhero story?
Superpowers are ordinary in MHA, so the question is not simply whether powers exist. The story asks how institutions and everyday people adapt when nearly everyone may have an unusual ability.
- Training is a profession: aspiring heroes attend specialist schools and learn judgment, rescue technique, teamwork and controlled use of their Quirks.
- Abilities have practical limits: a powerful Quirk still requires stamina, precision and situational awareness. Characters often win by using an ability creatively rather than by having the largest attack.
- Public trust matters: heroes are visible figures whose decisions affect civilians and whose reputations can influence society.
- Classmates are part of the story: Midoriya’s progress is tied to a large group of students, each with a distinct Quirk, personality and reason for pursuing hero work.
This framework gives the series room for action, school drama, comedy, ethical questions and long-term character development without requiring the reader to know an existing comic-book universe.
Manga or anime: which should you choose first?
There is no canonically superior format. The practical choice depends on how you like to consume stories and what is available where you live.

Streaming catalogs are territory-dependent. A service’s series page proves that the title is listed, not that every season is available in every country. Check the catalog displayed after signing in from your location before relying on a particular season or language track.
How to start with the manga
- Begin with Volume 1. It introduces Midoriya, All Might, the Quirk system and the path toward U.A. Starting at the beginning avoids context gaps created by jumping into a later volume.
- Choose print or digital. VIZ lists the English-language series and provides a digital Shonen Jump reading route. Retail listings may also use the search phrase “My Hero Academia manga Vol. 1.” Availability and prices can change.
- Read in numbered-volume order. The main series is numbered sequentially, so you do not need a separate chronology for the core manga.
- Stop before supplementary books if you want the main story only. Character guides and other extras are optional; they are not required to understand the numbered volumes.
The official Shueisha listing for Japanese Volume 42 gives a release date of December 4, 2024, a length of 184 pages and ISBN 978-4-08-884349-0. That is the Japanese edition’s information and should not be treated as the release date or pagination of an English edition.
How to start with the anime
- Open a licensed service available in your country. Crunchyroll maintains a My Hero Academia series page, but the seasons and subtitles or dubs offered can differ by territory.
- Choose the earliest available season or episode. The opening material establishes Midoriya’s Quirkless background, his meeting with All Might and his route into U.A.
- Use the on-screen episode order. For a first viewing, do not skip around based on character names or story-arc labels.
- Manage spoilers. Hide autoplay previews, avoid searching unfamiliar character names and do not read later episode summaries until you have reached them.
The anime is a good first choice if you want the emotional effect of voice performances and music or if your local access makes streaming easier than obtaining books. It is not necessary to read the manga first.

How the two formats relate
The anime adapts the manga’s story rather than creating a separate continuity for beginners. The broad characters and premise remain the same, while the experience of a scene changes with timing, sound and performance.
Reading and watching simultaneously can create avoidable spoilers if you are at different points. Decide which format is your primary route, then use the other only after reaching the corresponding material. If you switch formats, identify your last completed chapter or episode rather than relying on a general season label.
The available evidence does not establish a universal episode-to-volume conversion, a complete regional catalog or a recommended placement for every movie and OVA. A first-time viewer can safely start with the main anime or Volume 1 without solving those side-material questions.
How much background knowledge do you need?
None. MHA does not assume that you know Japanese superhero terminology, prior manga series or anime conventions. The story introduces its vocabulary through school lessons, conversations and demonstrations.
You may notice conventions common in Japanese comics, such as expressive sound effects, chapter-based pacing and honorifics in some translations. These are presentation choices, not prerequisites. Read the character names and explanations in your chosen edition and let the setting establish itself.

- You do not need to watch another superhero franchise first.
- You do not need to memorize the entire class roster at once.
- You do not need to buy a character guide to follow the main plot.
What is the manga’s publication status?
VIZ’s English-language series page lists Volume 1 as the debut volume and Volume 42 as the final volume of the main manga. That gives beginners a defined starting point and a completed numbered run rather than an open-ended first volume with no endpoint.

The official VIZ Shop has listed Volume 1, a box set containing Volumes 1–20 and Ultra Analysis: The Official Character Guide. Product stock, regional shipping and prices can change, so treat shop listings as availability snapshots rather than permanent guarantees.
Ultra Analysis is a supplementary guide for readers who want additional character information. It is optional and can reveal information you would rather discover through the story, so postpone it until you are comfortable with spoilers.
Common beginner pitfalls
Starting in the middle
A dramatic clip or a later volume may be what first attracted you, but jumping in there can spoil introductions and remove the explanation for important relationships. Use Volume 1 or the earliest anime episode instead.
Assuming every online listing is current
Retail inventory, digital rights and streaming catalogs change. Confirm the edition, language and territory at the time you buy or subscribe.
Confusing promotional material with story rules
Publisher synopses are useful introductions, but they are not a substitute for the narrative’s explanations. The “80 percent” figure is a fictional premise, and the official anime introduction’s circulation figure of more than 100 million copies is a publisher-reported figure whose original announcement date is not stated on the inspected page.
Looking up unfamiliar names
Search results can expose later costumes, alliances or plot developments. Keep a note of names you recognize and wait until the story introduces them.
What should you choose?
Choose the manga if you want the most direct, self-paced route from the beginning, prefer print or digital reading, or want to continue without depending on a local streaming catalog. Choose the anime if sound, color, acting and motion are central to what you enjoy, or if licensed streaming is your easiest access.
For a first attempt, the simplest plans are:
- Reading plan: start at Volume 1 and continue through the numbered volumes in order.
- Viewing plan: start with the earliest available anime episode on a licensed service in your region and follow its episode order.
- Hybrid plan: pick one format as your primary route and switch only after matching your completed chapter or episode, so you do not accidentally jump ahead.
Both routes introduce the same essential idea: a Quirkless boy is given a chance to pursue hero work and must learn what being a hero actually demands. That is all the background you need before opening the first volume or pressing play.
